Cool to see a recording engineer with board stuffing and soldering skills! In ye old days, I built my own boards!!!
Having just built one of these 500-series chassis kits and a pair of VP26s, even when dealing with some pretty serious vision problems...Yes, you can build this stuff. If you think you can't...Give it a try anyway. If a guy with bad vision can do it, you probably can.
Omg they are finally back in stock!
congrats on your build Colt!!! those chassis are awesome!!! I built my first chassis in 2013 along with VP25s, VP26s and VP312s. Looking to build the VP28s. Enjoy brother!!!
Cool music track for the build!
purfect soundtrack, like so good and the build was too! 🤩
What amazing skills! Would take me a month to build that.
Wow this is great, ty..
I once worked for Harmon as a solder assembly tech and DAMN where you learn to solder? Like a flow machine.

Thanks!! I felt a bit rusty in this one lol. I was a tech for quite a few years at a music store way back in the day
I just like the fact that: You know your shit You have the tracks to prove it You are not afraid to cut through bullshit trends and terms I learned ALOT by watching your videos As far as Im concerned. You're rock and roll
Them soldering skills! I wish I could do that as neatly. Cheers!

Been doing it for years, but so rusty on this build lol. All it takes is practice!
Is it a good idea to pick one up even if i never ever touched a soldering iron? I am kinda scared that i would mess it completly up or even better: i kinde build it somehow and the end result is shitty because of my soldering skills haha
I think it would be cool for you to do a video on how to use outboard gear. Do you just use it on the way in? If you only have one piece do you run it through and print the track? It’s confusing to me haha.
Any thoughts on the DIY:RE brand 500 gear? Also- thanks for showing just how easy that build is. Many people see solder and flip out.

Does my magic ball see a new Colt video in the future?! Either way- I enjoy the programs. A bunch. I found Andrew Masters (what a jerk?! Am I right?) a while back. Got hooked on his channel. Then oddly YT recommended you. I also rather enjoy the shared content. Note- Andrew Masters has an amazing channel. Is a better human. Almost as good as Colt.. almost
Is there chain linking with this chassis? Thanks
Hey Colt! How is it going… I’ve always wondered… what kind of power supply do you use with your Capi 500 rack??? I’m considering to buy and build one of these racks, but I’m not sure if I should buy the affordable ps they sell now, or if I should build the Group 51x PS… any comments???
Hi did you get one? All CAPI DIY kits are sold out all the time...
Hi, what is it powered with?
I wouldnt join Facebook if it was the last social site. Thanx Colt,Love the content. Question, Is there a Market for putting those together for people ?. Or selling prebuilt units, Im good at building these units,Pedals,etc,,,,...
@seanwool
Жыл бұрын
I'm with you. I'll prepay to backorder one of these if the site would let me, but I'm not touching Facebook. There appears to be a significant market for soldering these things for people based on how many prebuilt units are on Reverb.
Curious if you split the 500 modules between XLR and TRS patchbays. For example, if I want to record a mic input, obviously, I can’t do that if the whole thing is patched into a TRS patchbay. How do you get around that?
@council
8 ай бұрын
XLR - balanced cables from the mics. Had the same question myself and that seemed to be the way to go.
What type/size tip are you soldering these with?
@ColtCapperrune
Жыл бұрын
Honestly it has been years since I put the tip on the iron, but it is a pretty small, fine flat tip
What knife are you using? I am always looking for a better pocket knife....I like the size of that one!
@ColtCapperrune

This one is a ProTech SBR. Hands-down, my favorite EDC knife.
What kind of soldering iron/station do you use? Affiliate links?
@ColtCapperrune

Here is an affiliate for the iron I use. Much appreciated!! amzn.to/3eM2C4C
Your last name sounds like it would have been royalty back in the medieval ages, also idk what you're building but seems cool

A small correction, if you live in Europe, you can get a far cheaper series 500 case from Midas, like the L10, or L6. I can't say anything about the quality and the reviews are quite mixed. But even with a better PU, the Midas wins the cakes in a purely price comparison. I haven't checked the prices elsewhere.
@ColtCapperrune
Жыл бұрын
The Midas is only a 10 slot. This is an 11 slot. Thanks for watching!
@peterbrandt7911
Жыл бұрын
@@ColtCapperrune This is true, but even after inflation, the L10 is 280€ here and ready to go. I assume that many people would rather spend much less and get a pre built item, while waiving the 11th slot. Thanks for showing :)
@error8418

Good point. I don't mind any soldering, but after shipping, import fees and tax the CAPI gear is considerably less of a bargain in the EU, unfortunately.

🎉 nice 👍
Colt i will never be able to afford 500 series gear, but i have that exact cordless driver lol! Hitachi right.
How long did this take you? That time lapse was pretty intense haha
@ColtCapperrune
Жыл бұрын
Took about two hours to build while filming. I could probably do it in under an hour without the camera rolling lol. Thanks for watching!
are you using a new mic or new signal chain to process your speech in this video?
@ColtCapperrune
Жыл бұрын
Same chain, but different settings on the Tascam recorder going into the camera… After I was all done I realized it was clipping the entire time. No red lights were showing on the camera, but it sure sounds like it was clipping.

@@ColtCapperrune oh man that sucks haha, i thought you were just going for a more radio tone haha. great video though. I would love to get one of these but scared of what the customs fees would be to the UK
When you connect a 500 rack like this, do you go into the back of a patchbay with some sort of XLR -> TRS snake?
@ColtCapperrune
Жыл бұрын
I sure do!
@EricSauerets
Жыл бұрын
@@ColtCapperrune OK, thanks! As a home studio n00b, I've been very confused seeing everyone hook up their patchbays with TRS, but all of the ouboard gear using XLR, not realizing until very recently that they are combatible/convertible.
@EricSauerets
Жыл бұрын
@@ColtCapperrune still thinking back on this rack, and thinking of getting one. I was curious why you've chosen the XLR version vs the DB25 version?
How many mA per slot ?
@lessecretsduson
Жыл бұрын
Ok so I made some research and find that the psu is delivering 130mA per slot, you'll have problem with a lot of 500 series modules because they need much more than that, I like the idea of diy, just you will have to check the consumption of each module.
@ColtCapperrune
Жыл бұрын
130mA per slot is the API spec. So 130 x 11 is 1.43 amps. The SMPS is 2A per rail so plenty of headroom for power hungry modules that are NOT built to the API spec. Thanks for watching!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍👍👍❤🧡💛🧡❤
i'm way to bad at soldering for that HAHAHAHA
Where's the power supply?
People are crazy to buy and pay that much for a metal box an a few connectors with PSU. I am just blown away...
Are you even an audio engineer if you can't solder??
That's the onloy product that is OK from this small company. Anything audio sounds cheap. You guys better go with real API. API will also keep value where cheap DIY stuff doesn't.
