THE BEST VW KARMANN GHIA ON THE PLANET - MEXXSPEED RACING

Martin Friedschroeder of Mexxspeed Racing from Vienna in Austria, made the long trip to the UK for the Doorslammers event, to race his amazing 1967 2977cc Karmann Ghia. I spent some time with him over the 3 days to have a good look round his car, and was even lucky enough to sit in it, and start it up.
After a few days getting the car running down into the 9.2's, Martin switched on the NOS, but unfortunately the clutch said no thank you, and in the 2nd elimination run the slip was so bad, that car crossed the line in just 14 seconds, and that was the end of competition for Martin.
Martin's PB is an 8.68 @ 151mph, and at the Pod he ran a best of 9.26 @ 152mph.
It was an absolute pleasure meeting Martin, and hopefully I will catch up with agin soon.

Mexx is a wonderful and generous guy as well as being incredibly inventive and hard working. He's helped us (the red Fiat 126 in the background) tremendously

@@chrisburns4297 once it’s in the system it never leaves! I own more now than ever before. I picked up a ‘58 over Easter that I bought in 2018 and it’s the first time I’d seen it on collection! Lockdowns took over etc….

@@neilvenners3309 I also used to have a '58. It was a racecar. You probably remember it when it raced in the UK back in the 90s- Bugeyed

@@chrisburns4297 yes I remember Bugeyed very well! Although I didn’t realise it was that early? Same one that’s in Ireland now? In fact it has a clip in oval panel but maybe you know this already?! We have a beetle race car under construction but it’s way off as we’re running a Pug 205 at present. It’s my sons first season.
Awesome Ghia! Goofy me.. I thought the owner/builder was a super excited guy until I realized I had the video viewing speed at 1.25! Whew! I had a much milder 2110cc Ghia in the mid 70's but even that was a whole lotta fun.

Bit late watching this one but a great video. I've seen this car in the flesh and known about it for years but this highlights just how amazing the engineering is on this car & how knowledgeable and nice Martin is.

Incredible car in so many ways. Over 400hp from a n/a VW engine is amazing, but there are just so many trick things on the car.

Slept on this video for some reason. Never cool to be first to the party anyway😎✌️ Strange as VAG is in my blood. My first experience of Santa pod was Bug Jam. I think it was Bug Jam 4. The Prodigy was playing. What a weekend that was. Absolutely loved this video. Martin is such a cool guy. Amazing car/build. I regret not hunting down this car at door slammers. Hope he brings it next year.

I've only seen it once before at the European Bug In Show in Chimay.
Shawn geers ghia runs 930s at 1730 lbs 400 cc smaller and with a simple 002 bus box on gasoline consistently and with super street rules steel roof and quarters floor pans and carburetors. And like 8 years ago

I know, and that was a cool car too. Martin has run an 8.6 without the NOS, but didn't manage it this time round at Santa Pod
