The Oculus Quest was already arguably the best VR headset, at least in terms of versatility. But the addition of built-in hand tracking AND playing desktop VR games via Oculus Link might just make it the MUST-HAVE VR headset.

EVOLICIOUS then why is it only doing it when they pair the oculus quest through pc but works flawlessly when it’s the rift? And I don’t think it would be the quest firmware lagging it out because it would just be plain stupid to run the games from the 64g drive on the quest when it’s plugged into a pc with a couple terrabytes and twice the computing power, so the most likely cause is the USB cord not being set up properly or as Sportscardude stated, the fact that the quest has to register the movements of the controllers through the head set then to the pc

The reason for the black part is that the headset is doing internal computations to reduce the motion latency. So if you move your head the headset moves the already rendered view, so that the head motion appears to have no latency. If you the motion is to fast the and the range is to wide, the headset does not have any Content for this section of the view port. This effect could be reduced by rendering the view on the PC with even wider FOV, so that the Headset has more area to play with. The motion signals are still sent to the PC so that it can incorporate the new head pose into the next render cycle. In general this technique the removes correlation between latency and motion sickness. It should also help with unstable frame rates, as the Headset can also create virtual intermediate frames that, at least take you head motion into account. Other game elements like you shooting the bow, cannot be compensated for by the algorithm, that why they feel so (and are) delayed.

I think they're making it feel more responsive by streaming a wider FOV than is displayed, and then doing asynchronous reprojection on the headset, that way it feels more responsive, even though your effectively still seeing information that is old. Hence why there's a delay in controller actions but not in the viewing. That would explain the black bars, because you're turning past the point where it is able to show a full screen. developers.google.com/vr/discover/async-reprojection

It's been a long year. Hand tracking is actually pretty good now, I suggest people try out Waltz of the Wizard on the Oculus store. Virtual Desktop Streamer no longer needs the patch, so it's now a case of buy it on the Oculus store, download the app on your PC and you're basically good to go. The delay for wireless stream if proper router is very dependent on network bandwidth, don't have the issue on mine with an 850Mbps 802.11ac connection. Delay for encode, decode and transmission is about 30ms for me, which is fine for 95% of games.

The headset does async timewarp and async spacewarp on the feed from the PC - thats why there are border artifacting and controller mismatch. Frames showing up late and are interpolated, the time/spacewarp interpolated frames smooths the general view, but makes the controllers appear out of sync since they are only updated on the "real" frames, and also the thing where when you move your head too fast, the movement goes out of bounds of the older frame that was position shifted that async time/spacewarp inserted to compensate for late frames from the pc. You could most likely get better results with windows tweaks and a better cable, on a USB with nothing else on that controller.

    4 жыл бұрын

@@evolicious Well neither myself, nor any one of the multiple people I have let use my headset to play games using ALVR have noticed any delay. I will admit my comment was badly worded as there is most certainly a painfully noticeable delay using the kinect for FBT. When I said "no noticeable delay" I was strictly referring to using only my headset and controllers. If I try and turn really fast I still can't see the black edges of the display as visible in this video. Whether that is just because I has a software designer help to tweak ALVR to run better for me, or because my internet is fast enough to keep up with my movement, idk. And no I'm not blind, nor am I slow in either sense of the word. :) EDIT: It is possible that maybe you are referring to a delay that is due to the inherent technical limitations of the Quest itself, in which case the reason I don't notice this is likely because the Quest is the first VR headset I have ever owned and the only headset I have ever had the chance to use.

  • @DaGovernator

"I am wondering how much this experience is running on the quest versus the graphics card". I am going out on a limb here and say very little. I will make this easy to understand for people that might be pondering the same question. The Rift S uses Displayport cable AND USB 3 cable. That is 2 separate cables. - Displayport cable for displaying rendered image from graphics card to your headset (and audio possibly) - USB 3 cable for everything else (controller tracking, controller input and any other low level processes). The Link cable for Quest, uses ONE USB C cable for everything I mentioned above. That means lower bandwidth for each process over the cable (bottle necking). Yes its a lot more complicated but this is very basic reason why the Quest + link cable does not give the same quality PCVR experience that the Rift S may produce.

bxn4l I like where your head is at but there is a small problem. Remember how I said it was more complicated? So keep in mind that the DisplayPort cable goes from the video card directly to the headset. Well, at the moment, you can’t do that with USB. There are more “check points” so to speak. The image data must go through pcie port, over the bus and to the USB port. Again, the process is more complicated but this is the process in basic form).

Man, jumping from the previous video to this one is crazy. Btw glad you’re still making the typical stuff you’re known and appreciated for, just like you promised you would. Don’t want you to stop doing this ever also because I know it’s your true passion after all. Take sometime, go on a vacation with your dear ones and I’m sure everything will look simpler and less stressful when you come back and the choice to keep doing your job will come natural. You probably exploded because you couldn’t take the pressure much longer and never really took sometime off for yourself which can be damaging. You probably also reconsidered the priorities in your life and for now being missing out on your family weighs more than making videos, as it should. That’s why a good and deserved vacation would probably make things clearer in your mind. Making this an hobby rather than a daily job as it’s been for the last years could mean less but better content, especially because you would focus on making the videos you really care about without the tough schedule you’ve been used to for years and not having that psychological pressure from missing out on the things that are most important to you can only mean better content. Coudn’t imagine the world of tech without LTT and TechQuickie, but even if you stop eventually, I’ll keep following you until the very last day.

Such a popular KZread channel and they can’t fork out the money for the official cable, I know they are out of stock with the link cable but they shouldn’t have done this test until they at least tried it with the real cable then we could know if this was a proper test or not.

EVOLICIOUS Why are you trying to insult me? Calling me a moron that’s informal you don’t even know me like that. You asume I don’t know anything. I’m the moron okay let’s make this personal, your either blind or illiterate...because I simply stated that they should have done the test with the official cable before coming to any conclusion because fact is there are people that only like 1st party cables for their phones, tablets or any other device. So to do this test properly they had to at least to try it with the official cable because as I said some people would wonder if there was potentially anything different, then the consumer can choose either cable they prefer without any doubt that there would be any difference in performance. But you come over here with all your technical jargon plus insults. Do you know everything there is to know? I’m 100% sure there are many things you don’t understand or haven’t learned yet, but does that make you a moron because you don’t currently know a particular thing or fact? According to you I’m a moron aka stupid having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense. And that’s not true about me, you can call a person ignorant and that’s not a personal attack on them because ignorance means a person lacks the awareness of something, but a stupid person (moron) lacks the enough intelligence to understand something. And I can assure you I am not a moron, not a genius but definitely not a moron.
