Which format do you use AVCHD or XAVC S? Anyone out there still using MP4?!

I was using AVCHD for a long time but I switch to XAVC S, I think it looks better then AVCHD. And that Tim 👇 I think its bot or fake. Trust me, he was on my channel too but I dont believe him. 🤜🤛🤷‍♂️

Arron Prescott it is not greyed out, it’s just not an option. Maybe, it needs the U3 class 10, because I have U1 Class 10.

This was so helpful. I really love the comparisons they really help to decide what format to use and the right reasons to chose it.

I've noticed quite a bit more background noise (audio) when I record AVCHD opposed to XAVC S, which is odd. I can hear it on your vid too.

I was using MP4 format for the longest time since I bought my a5100 🤦 and just started using AVCHD because of your videos💙 I don't have the SD card for the XAVC S and it seems the file is really large so I might stick with AVCHD. Thank you for this 💙

Not sure about the a5100 but on my a7iii XAVC -S can record in 50 or 25mbit... the XAVC-S at 25mbit/s still looks better than the AVCHD at 28mbit/s. So better video and smaller fines :-)

My question is if I record with the XAVC S using the memory card you recommended, can I edit the video with filmora wondershare 9 editing software on a windows machine or mac? if yes, what is the best way to transfer the videos to my laptop? I just started using my a6000 for video to free up my Nikon z7ii body. Even though I’m late to the game with my a6000 and video, I’m very pleased with the xavcs option. I thought it might look much lower quality compared to my Nikon z7ii MP4 file (1080) that I was used to BUT it is really great (in-studio) for my usage. So a6000 xavcs format is working great. Thanks!

Faster SDXC memory cards will have the UHS rating, or Ultra High Speed, represented by a number inside the letter “U.” U1 means it’s 10 MB/s; U3 means it’s rated at 30 MB/s, when you use XAVC S format, you need U3 rated card

XAVC-S does have lower bitrate options which compete with AVCHD on file size but keep the better quality from being progressive scan video. At least on the A7RIV this is the case, where there is a 25M setting for XAVCS

I’m a novice but I’m trying to learn XAVC S to do a wedding. I then want to put the footage on a 2d disc for the couple. I am confused how to do this without loosing quality. I have used Cyberlink Powedirector to edit and do dvds in the past. What formats do most people do to save space and quality for a dvd to play in a DVD player and what format for a digital copy on the computer or usb? Would appreciate your advice.

hello thanks for video. today i have bought sony nex f3. it has only mp4 on 1440.1080 (25fps) and avchd 1920.1080 (50fps) which is better for recording? AVCHD OR MP4 ?

On my FS5, AVCHD looks absolutely horrendous, but it's necessary to do Super Slow Mo, or at least 1080p120FPS, which does looks amazing. Unless I absolutely NEED more than 60p, I'm doing XAVC. Thoughts?

XAVCS does look a bit better than AVCHD, but that is on my little monitor. How do the 2 compare after editing (4k compliant) and putting on a disk or card and shown on a 4k TV?

Arron Prescott they got better through the video editor, some clips seem low quality but I believe it’s because of my camera settings. Some clips seem fine but then others seem not crisp.

im a new Mac user. I recently got the Sony zv1 and I'm only able to use XAVC S 4k and AVCHD. I have recorded some using the xavc format but can't view the video file. Could you help me please? I'd appreciate it!! I'll be editing on premiere pro.

Maybe you guys should try different video editing software to see whether that is the problem.

If I'm reading this correctly it is not possible to change the kb/sec (mb/sec) for these formats ? You mentioned XAVCS records at twice the filesize of AVCHD. What if AVCHD just went to record at double mb/sec to match XAVCS ? Are you telling me that we have videocameras today that do not allow you to adjust the kb/sec and/or frames/sec, rendered screen size ? For instance I record videos using H265 and will often adjust all of the parameters depending upon the final media. If it's to be put on a cellphone, not much kb/sec is considered. For DVD, still pretty small, true Blu-Ray, obviously it's bigger to maintain high quality in rapid action scenes.

But within the AVCHD I see several options: FX, FH, HQ, LP, PS what are the differences between those?

Hi! Here From Argentina! When I record in XAVC format, then I cant transfer the videos to my iPhone using the App imágine Edge. Apear a message in the camera that said that its not possible to do this action with XAVC format. And when I use MP4 format, i dont have that problem, i can tranfers the videos as i transfer the photos. Can you help me ? ( sorry with the language haha)

I actually use XAVC S but with the 25mbit option. The 50mbit generates massive files that i dont really need. To my eye the 25mbit XAVC-S still gets higher quality that the 28mbit AVCHD. Maybe you should compare those two some time. (not sure if the 5100 has the 25mbit option but my a7iii sure does)

Yes, the file is written out as an mp4 so should load into most editing software.

Okay, I'm a bit confused here. After watching this video I went and bought a new SCXD card and changed the settings on my Sony RX 100 III to XAVC S. When I go to edit my files are showing that it's still an MP4 file? Does that sound right?

yes, off course, mp4 is the container and file extension. whether you use xavcs or avchd as the codec, your output file will be in mp4 extension. Avchd is a big no for me.

you cant transfer higher than mp4 to a phone simply because its too large. You wouldn't be able to post them on social media anyway

xavc can’t transfer videos by wireless with the app to download to your phone only can be done with mp4

Thanks! The cars seem shocking/laggy, almost as if the internal computer of the camera has trouble with all the information. Do you know why this could be? It might be my screen but I doubt it

I have noticed the same on my sony cameras

Currently binging your videos because i just got an A5100. i am currently struggling with somewhat jittery background in my videos (similar to what i see in this Vid). So far the only solution i found is to use manual focus only which is not ideal imo. Any ideas?

@@ArronPrescott Sometimes more, sometimes less. It is very obvious at 0:55 if you look at the speaker on the left. When i record it seems extremely random when (and why) the camera tries to autofocus on different things. I barely move but the bookshelf behind me with its sharp contours makes even the smallest Auto-focus adjustments very obvious.

espacially when shooting against a lightsource I wouldn't use autofocus. It will always jump and try to adjust. I would always use manual focus!

I see that new camcorders have tablets etc... streaming feature. That's great,since you would have to rip files in normal format on computer with a unique software then to transfer to the tablet etc...And you require a very good tablet.

Both these file types are supported in most major editing software (Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, iMovie etc).

Heey! I have an a6500 and what I mainly do is vlogs, but filming in 4K saves a lot of space. Do you think doing it on XAVC S HD would be good quality? Also, is 60p50m, 30p50m or 24p50m better? Sorry for all the questions, I can't find an answer anywhere! Thank you! 🥺❤️

If you're recording for KZread I'd say 1080p is definitely good enough quality, 4k is better but if you need to save space 1080p will still look great. As for frame-rate setting, It's user preference 60p50M is the highest frame-rate setting, but 30p50M will still look great and will be a smaller file size. Hope that helps!

@@ArronPrescott Yeah! Yesterday I tested all of those settings and the 30p50M or 60p50M look way better then 24p50m. But I'll take your word and go for 30p50M to get even smaller size files! Thank you!!!

XAVC-S uses the MP4 wrapper format, so it is recorded in the highest quality but is packaged into an mp4 for greater compatibility and suitability in consumer workflows

uhs 1 is first preference for xavc-s

You can convert XAVC TO MP 4 file in the plat memories app

Without this video being rendered and uploaded at 1440p or higher, the youtube compression really makes the comparisons hard to tell apart. I'm sure the difference is noticeable with the original files though.

You try to give the video more brightness it will be great if you do

My compact sony cam film in avchd format and for my horror it saved all my precios videos in a diferent folder other then the photo folder. I tranfer all files from the photo folder and never checked if the video files were among them. Then i format the card ! I feel like an idiot ! All my family videos were there😪

For a Sony camcorder with a built in 64GB storage: Quality ; Recording Time XAVC S 4K; 2h10m XAVC S HD; 2h37m (Why?! It should be more) AVCHD 24M; 6h07m AVCHD 17M; 8h23m I expected XAVC S HD to record about double the 4k. Or the camera estimations are off.
