Steambent or "solid" snare drums have been around for almost 100 years. Why do players and collectors alike covet these cool pieces? Find out and hear three different examples of solid snares in this video. Here are the three drums we explore today:
- 14x7" Slingerland Radio King (Refinished by Mike Smith of North Chicago, IL)
- 14x5.5" Slingerland Radio King (in Red Sparkle Finish)
- 14x7" Leedy Snare Drum (Overhauled by MKE Drum Co.)
These vintage drums are great, and people still build like this today. Craviotto Drums, founded by Johnny Craviotto, are wonderful drums that spawned from the work of a man who built drums for DW Drums and later under the Solid Drum Company brand. Doc Sweeney Drums makes some incredible solid drums, and I believe they're sourcing their shells from a really neat operation in the Pacific Northwest called Cask Drum Craft, who are worth a peek too. Smaller builders like Gary Posey and Summit Drums are carrying on the craft too! Each brand and builder bring something a little different to the table, just like the brands of yesteryear. And it's the tiny differences that get me excited to hit every single snare drum I find!
I used Turkish Cymbals 15" Millennium Hi Hats, 20 and 22" Meta Brilliant Crashes, and a 22" Millennium Ride in this video.
Some of the music I played drums to in this video comes from my drumless tracks, available at slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com/ .
The first drumless track used is volume 8, number 47. - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
The second drumless track used is volume 8, number 104. - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
The third drumless track used is volume 8, number 89. - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In) - Beyer Dynamic Opus 65 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I really need a nap about now.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

I encourage every professional drummer to own at least 1 Slingerland Radio king snare drum from any period from 40`,50s and 60`s. Just like the old Les Pauls, there's a mysterious presence when playing these instruments. My 1959 GK Radio King snare drum has that beautiful aged tone that cannot be duplicated by modern snares. Get them now before you need a credit card with a loan.

Great stuff, Timbo. Keep it up. The Slingerland long snare mechanism was the Magnum. Pain in the butt!!! Love the drum...1983 Niles Badge 14x8. 5-ply deep thunder! When the throw failed I installed an INDe SB1. Problem solved. 👍

Oh yeah, the old Slapshot strainer! Those were cool. I had one of those big boy 14x8s years and years ago too, and someone had replaced the strainer with a Dunnett. Made things way easier!

Love me some MKE Drum Co. goodness. Derek is the man. Turned my Super-Sensitive into a Supraphonic with ease. Also, McDonald's Fries are the best French fries on planet earth. Gigantic corporate chain yes, but damn are they good. Overcooked, undercooked, over-salted, doesn't matter. Just delicious. What can I say? We all like to back a winner every once in a while.

The snare bridges and fully extended snares were the basis of the Radio King patent. Slingerland made other solid shell snares that weren't RK's. Artist model, for example.

  • @timbofromkeno

I didn’t realize that’s the basis for the original patent. Interesting! And I actually owned an artist. Wonderful drum. Loved the tube lug look. I think they’re just often overlooked as compared to the RKs. : )
