    QUESTION: At a high-priced health food grocery store, I recently saw a product (I think it was tea or a latte mix, but honestly I can't remember) that boasted "activated turmeric" and included black pepper as the activating ingredient. What exactly does "activated" mean in this context? Is it for real, or just another bogus health claim that comes with an expensive price tag?

  • @Bubbaluv8

    @Bubbaluv8

    2 жыл бұрын

    The curcumin in turmeric, which has a large proportion of the health benefits of turmeric, is not metabolized well in our bodies. Black pepper, even a small amount, "activates" the metabolization of curcumin by around %2,000. But, I'd just add my own at home, black pepper is cheaper than turmeric. So, it's true it activates, but I think it's also true it's a bit of a rip off, displacing some of the turmeric with black pepper.

  • @jesusjones3014

    @jesusjones3014

    Жыл бұрын

    Black pepper (bioperine/piperine are extracted from black pepper) increases the bioavailability by up to 2000%. So without black pepper or its extracts its semi useless to get any real benefits from the tumeric/curcumin. Tumeric powder only has 2 to 6% curcumin so while it's tasty for curry it's not a great way to get the benefits of the curcumin in tumeric. If you like it go for it, add away but you must have black pepper. The best is a supplement with 95% curcuminoids. so 1000mg of tumeric powder with 95% standardized curcuminoids will give you 950mgs. Don't be fooled by proprietary blends or something that may day 2000 mgs tumeric powder but then only shows 200mgs of 95% standardized curcuminoids bc the math doesnt add up meaning they put in 2000mgs tumeric powder for fluff and just added in 200 mgs curcuminoids by itself. I love Costco kirkland tumeric supplement giving you 950mg standardized curcuminoids per serving, they go on sale every so often and a bottle is about 20 bucks and lasts about 4 months. I still have tumeric in foods but supplements is where to get it for health benefits!

    But be careful which ones you buy. The FDA issued an import alert stating ports could detain shipments from certain importers. They targeted turmeric from India and Bangladesh. “Based on what the data are showing us so far, buying spices in the U.S. instead of online or when traveling overseas seems to be a good way to protect yourself, because the spices that have been legally imported into the U.S. at least have the chance of going through heavy metal screening upon import,” said Kim Gaetz, a public health epidemiologist based in North Carolina. “Almost all spices are imported, but the lead levels seem to be highest in those that were actually purchased outside of the U.S.,” Gaetz added.

    @@mirandamom1346 Ok, that will be this weekend's project. Unfortunately, a lot of my learning curve comes from trial and error. I didn't realize lentils keep absorbing liquid, do I made a whole bag of them and the next day it was like lentil porridge.

    Just hit up the Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi or Asian supermarket and you'll get it at a lower price, for sure.
