    We did a taste test in Italy, the region of Tuscany, during the carefree travel days....How you described it, is exactly how we approached the tasting and we all had our favorite. Of course we were in the middle of Tuscany, on a warm sunny day, surrounded by olive trees, amazing company, good wine and incredible cheese, so may have influenced our entire tasting experience. Non the less, I don’t view olive oil the same anymore and have found that the Kirkland 100% Italian Extra Virgin, cold extracted olive oil from Costco is quite nice for the price.

    I couple days ago I got a bottle from my friends in Umbria. The oil is green as most olives are. I wish I could take a pix and show it to you. These olives were handpicked, the entire batch was not mixed with any other olives from the region or even from the neighbor's tree, all where taken to a frantoio and cold pressed with a stone wheel! It's so good!

    2 years late, but according to the review they have! They sent it to the official olive oil council which said that all but 2 were disappointing and had critical flaws. They also sent them to a lab (in another tasting I believe) to test for if they were extra virgin or not (which was defined by certain amounts of aromatic compounds I believe)

    When this test was conducted, California Olive Ranch really was purely from California. I know that because I always bought it. In the ensuing months, it is now blended with oils from other countries, sorry to say, probably to keep the price steady. UPDATE: the California version is now available in the New York City metro area, and that’s what I’ve been buying. Definitely a higher-quality product than the other mass market brands.

    Redd Green please do your research first. By default, olive oil is non-gmo as no olive varietals exist that are gmo. However, the reason some oils use the label are that enzymes are used during olive milling, and these can be gmo or non-gmo. Furthermore, whether you (or the brands) like it or not, some retailers require non-gmo certification regardless of if it’s warranted or not, so some brands will obtain it because they need to in order to access the retailers they want.

  • @reddgreen2630

    @reddgreen2630

    MasterShake9000 The topic is Virgin Olive Oil, by convention the label Virgin Olive Oil requires that oil is processed from the olive drupes using mechanical processes only with no chemical treatment (where is the enzyme there?). Further, producers pay for the non-GMO label, which is not an insignificant cost, especially for small operations. These costs are passed on to the consumers. I do not dissuade anyone from buying non-GMO, it is their choice, but they should know that there is an extra cost for their choice.

    Watching this a year later, the California Olive Ranch one has been discontinued due to "the state [CA] could not produce enough olives to meet demand" so they get the same style oil from Portugal, Chile, and Argentina and mix that oil with what little they can get from California for a replacement I'm not sure it's Product name from California Olive Ranch, I had Bertolli the 3rd in this segment but now I think they consider it #2 due to some recent quality improvements. This always happens with all products, Beard shavers, Microwaves & washing machines, they make one good run then once people hear about it they switch to lower cost versions and coast on the one good run.

    The Trader Joes extra virgin is the closest thing I have found to what I can get in the Mediterranean countries. That California brand they touted is meh.....Also they criticized oils coming from different countries. Well, Spain produces inexpensive oil, so other countries such as Italy will buy from Spain and bottle it in their own countries. That doesn't mean the quality of the oil is not good, so that guy is wrong about that. Also some oils are really underrated. For example, olive oil from Tunisia which is cheap and flavorful.

    That omission jumped out at me also, since it's been fairly widely reported that even high-end products at pricey, allegedly health-conscious stores have been found to be adulterated with poor-quality oils. There's even an outfit (olive oil hunters?) that sells subscribers quarterly shipments at about $40/bottle after screening producers in person. That's not even true. In all foods - be it rum, whiskey, olive oil, etc. always ignore the color, because coloring something is the easiest thing to do. The producers often throw leaves and grass into the press to add that "vibrant, green color". That's why they use blue cups. Quality olive oil can be really deeply green when unripe olives are used, but also golden yellow when the olives were ripe.

    Yep, we noticed this about 2 months back all of our 100% California California Olive Ranch oil was being replaced with "Destination Series" nonsense. Trying to charge the same or more for pooling multiple sources as if that's a benefit to the consumer? From their website it appears they still have the 100% California variety. So either grocery stores are making the switch, or California Olive Ranch is pushing out lower quality purposefully. I verified online at all of our local vendors, Safeway, Whole Foods, QFC, and Fred Meyer. They've all made the switch to the Destination Series. Seems too coordinated to not be coming from California Olive Ranch themselves.

    Ahhh - I learned something today: a) buy one from a single country. Fortunately the one I currently have in my pantry comes from Spain which it's delicious, comes in a dark green bottle and since it's sold as a store-brand, it's reasonably priced; and b) check out expiry date

    To each his own. I like Colivito - I also like many Greek imported oils.

    All the brands pictured were tested, they just pull a few notable ones for the segment for the purpose of discussion.

    I feel so lucky to get freshly pressed olive oil from my olive growing friends. However olives don't grow consistently. It's rare to get a good growth two years in a row. On off years I'm driven to use supermarket oils. I will take your lessons to heart and will shop accordingly.

    Most people I know use the Kirkland olive oil at Costco. I am surprised they were not one of the ones even tested.

    I love Pompeian!! To me it has a very fresh, earthy, clean flavor that makes veggies taste delicious! I do plan to try the California Ranch or whatever that first one was, just to compare the differences. Thank you for doing this. 🙂
