For me raising tilapia in southern CA its a question of how to make them stop spawning lol. I no longer have a separate breeding tank. I just watch out for little fry in the grow out tanks and scoop them out, every month or so I have a new batch to grow.

If the female has eggs in her mouth, she will stop eating; So the best way to check the female is whene you give food (you don't need to fellow the fish all the time) if you have more then six fish or you have a big tank that will be hard to find. Thanks for sharing your experience.

in my country tilapia farming is very popular,a big problem while raising tilapia is in their growth stage they would breed with on another, causing many females to be stunted so people sometimes gave testosterones to the larvas of the fish until they are a fingerling to make all of them males, they grow faster and they won't breed.usually tilapia offspring that are made during the raising of tilapia is ignored or even thrown away since they are of bad quality and wont grow well. generally if we want to breed tilapia we need to raise them for a year and pick tilapias that are 1 to 2.5 kgs in size, they yield offspring that grows well and won't be dwarves.my country has government certified tilapia hatcheries and research labs.in those research labs they selectively breed tilapia and come up with newer breeds of tilapia.in hatcheries what they do is they put good quality tilapia in giant mud ponds, they feed them high protein pellets once they bred they let the females raise the tilapia babies until they are fingerling. they scoops up the fingerlings and sell it to fish raisers

Far easier to go by breeding behaviors. According to the biologists w/ Lakeway Tilapia, this cannot be performed without special equipment as the duct is too small to see otherwise - the whole food coloring thing, I tried it when I was a noob. One of the easiest fish to breed ever. With blue tilapia the males tend to turn more white while displaying and the females tend to put on stripes, while the other females tend to darken from the abuse of the process. I know this from a lot of experience and observation. I can't speak on any other species outside the blues. The only time I ever ran into a problem was with an alpha female. But, that's an easy fix. Once a fish is holding, you know it's a female. I'll move them one at a time to a breeding colony to make sure and then move the breeding male last to get any other brood stock or competing fish out of the tank. Learning to ID fish that look mostly identical is a bit of a trick. For me the hard part isn't getting fry, it's growing them all out to 8"+, some 14"+, the amount of work that goes into it with my conditions is ridiculous, I opted to keep my breeder at low temps until just before spring and invested in ice fishing equipment this year... power costs are going up and heating ponds in Wisconsin winters is too power extensive. Edit: 2 females to 1 male is cruel. You want at least 4 or 5, ideally 6 females as the abuse is extensive, if you put 2 females in with an aggressive breeding male he will kill them in a couple of days or less. Bad advice. I wouldn't use less than 5 females and you have to give them a place to hide for breaks between "rough and mostly unwanted foreplay." It's also a horrible idea to put two breeding males in one tank, you want singular breeding colonies with specific fish selected for their traits, but, more importantly, they will kill each other! The tank does not look good. I'd never represent myself in aquaculture next to a tank like that - this video is packed with noob misinfo.
