I like to add you should not put female back in with male right away that's poor breading and is hard on her for she has lost weight and hasn't ate for about 2 weeks, Let get her weigh back up for a couple weeks then put her back. I find that a bell jar incubator is the best way to go if you want a lot of fish. I have tried most ways to incubate. Also sac fries can make it on their own if you have no fish in tank. Larry

I need some help with my tilapia. I have 3 blue Tilapia, 1 male and 2 females they are all about 8 inches each. I had my male a lone for all his life and when I introduced 1 female he seemed happy, 2 days later I put in another female, but this time the female that was already in the tank beat up my new female, now I have the new female in a separate tank recovering from scale loss and ripped fins. Meanwhile in the tank I have the male and female in the female is getting beat up occasionally by the male and gets chased too. How can I get them to breed? What am I doing wrong? How can I have a 4 to 1 ratio when i have females fighting? My tank is a 50 gallon with 630 gal/hour internal filtration, sand, drifwood, stones, and 2 plecos.

Your breeder tank looks fairly small. Most info on the net says that to breed Tilapia, you need a 75g and larger tank. What size is your tank? It looks like it is only 29g. Also, how much is all that equipment costing you in terms of electricity (ball park)?
@LifeBuzzN
9 жыл бұрын
Jaime Craig Don't worry about what people say, do what works for you. Yes, they are 29's, and work just fine. I use 1 male to 4-5 females. Once she has fertilized eggs, I move her to a 29 of her own. I do also have a 75 breeder tank in the house, but that's a luxury. I'm currently raising a couple of thousand adults for about $50 monthly.

that was hilarious and educating at the same time. I'm not always enthused about looking at animals genitalia, but it is important when breeding. I didn't realize they were so hard to catch, I'm going to need a bigger net. could you set the net in there, so they an not so afraid of it, let them get used to it, then feed them and as the come up scoop them out? honest question

Sounds interesting......mine full bred fish die when it hit's 50.
i am wondering -- is it legal in all States to raise Talapia in tanks? I know in Mississippi you need to buy permits and have an inspection done if you want to add them to a Pond on your property. Very Informative video -- i am wanting to give it a try
Were you successful using the 20 gallon tank?
How do you feed the little fry's?
Wow
Do you separate the male once you see the females holding eggs? I did that, and my two holding females ended up swallowing their eggs after 2 weeks without the male in there.
what type of food r u feeding ???
really cool...I no the difference now...Lots of females make lots of babies...Good batch of babies momma made...You have a nice set up there...How long before you can eat them Mark?

These guys reach a pound or two after a good summer of feeding. My 1 year old are about 2-3 lbs now. They will grow pretty quick if you keep the water clean and feed them two or three times a day. I feed my only once a day. I'll make a video on eating them in a bit. Thanks Gonzo!!!
What size terra cotta pots do you use?
👍
Great video! What kind of filter do you use in your fry tank? What temp do you keep the water for them? Thanks for sharing!

panzig Thanks, I keep the tank at about 80 - 84 degrees and use a basic Bio Sponge Filter. Good Luck.
Just maintain your filter and water quality, you will be suprised by tank full of tilapia fries best of luck
Do you need to buy a Permit to raise Talapia at home in a tank? I'm very interested

Purina Tilapia food.
how do you identify which female will spawn after you isolate those 3 females and one male in the aquarium? is it necessary to turn off the oxygen tank when the eggs hatch?
@LifeBuzzN

You can tell by their body language. The male will encourage them by chasing them around the tank and rubbing on them.
What size tank was that that you used for breeding ?
@LifeBuzzN
9 жыл бұрын
Jason Williams 75 Gallon. However, I also us 20 gallon tanks for breeding the younger fish.
Trying to set mine up...do u need to seperate them to breed ?
Your breeder tank looks fairly small. Most info on the net says that to breed Tilapia, you need a 75g and larger tank. What size is your tank? It looks like it is only 29g. Also, how much is all that equipment costing you in terms of electricity (ball park)?
@LifeBuzzN

What do you feed the babies?
that was hilarious and educating at the same time. I'm not always enthused about looking at animals genitalia, but it is important when breeding. I didn't realize they were so hard to catch, I'm going to need a bigger net. could you set the net in there, so they an not so afraid of it, let them get used to it, then feed them and as the come up scoop them out? honest question
I have some fry that’s in a tank with gravel...should I remove the gravel? Thanks for the video.

It should be ok. Your breeder tank should be free of gravel. Mom will need to see the eggs to gather.

What does the average temperature need to be for Tilapia I hear it was much warmer for them then a bass or blue gill. I live in Texas where its nice and hot but the winters can get a little nippy. Just wondering what will happen in the winter time if i put my Tilapia in a pond.

So does male tilapia eat the young ones more, I have a huge tank. 200 of them are there and they just reproduced once... There are 15 days old ones but just 10 or 15 of them. I have a very big concrete farming water tank... I threw them inside. They were 100 and I already gave them away so now what am left with are 200 of thier babies that are 7months old now. How can I save the young ones from getting eaten. Please help

do they breed year round?

How many male and how many female for breeding required ,I mean proportion
do tilapia eat other small baby tilapia?
Dude just for information: Cichlids have to wholes. Males have 2 little wholes, and females have 1 little and 1 big whole. Also the shape of the last whole is different between the sexes

The male will start encouraging her immediately after spitting out the young. If you let him, he'll exhaust her to death. I usually let 1 female go once a month. Keeps her healthy.
