Main thing I would add to this is that when you're shooting your clean plate, take another pass of it with a big red light (or whatever color you go with for your effect) and turn it on and off, moving it around, shaking it. Big white light will work too as you can find a pole lamp at any store pretty easily, you'll just need to mess with color grading to get the light to match your overlay. Then you can mask it in and mess with the timing so that your digital effects have a practical interaction with your surroundings, helps sell the realism. Secondary element would be a very subtle lens flare for bright lights bouncing around your camera lens. Don't go all JJ Abrams. A subtle flare for every major glob of magic light. Either a plugin like VC Optical Flares or even just one more pass of the red magic above the overall environmental blur layer but higher contrast, horizontal blur, set it to Screen or Add, reduce opacity, just as a final polish element.

U got this. The strategy I'm using to create this effect is utilizing multiple pre-comps for one area so that I can constantly adjust every piece of the frame with comfort. If it's confusing I would recommend opening up AE yourself and messing around with the layer system until you feel comfortable. Then, come back and watch this video a few times and see how much you improve. Good luck!

at 5:17 the spell hit just warps into the saphire and turbulence effects for you but for me it wont it just sits on top of the effects

Try pre-comping your layer again. I know exactly what you mean, for some reason after effects doesn’t recognize all the layers in your pre-comp sometimes. If re-creating the pre-comp doesn’t work, close your project and re-open it.

Do you need the whole package of adobe primer pro they all seem to have different prices and confusing 😅 on which one to get I was looking at DaVinci but they don’t work by layers

You can signup for an After Effects subscription for $19.99 US, and Premier Pro separately also for $19.99 US. Or you can get the whole Adobe Package for $60 US which is what I have. It comes with every single adobe software. It made sense to get that because I use after effects, premier pro, and photo shop every day for work. However if you only want premier pro just get the $20 premier pro subscription.
