    Would you have the same odds at a 0-point unit if you put it as your second choice? Or would there be a chance that all of the tag quota gets taken by the time it reaches your second choice? Also, if you "draw" for a 0-point unit, can you still buy a preference point in the summer since you didn't burn any points?

  • @Recruitcreative

    @Recruitcreative

    Жыл бұрын

    You will not have the same odds if you put a unit as your second choice, this is because all first choices get drawn first. However some 0pt units are 0pts because there are more tags than total applicants, meaning you can draw with your second choice. You just have to look at the numbers on CPW or TOPRUT to see how many applicants each hunt code has on average. As for points, you cannot gain any points if you draw a tag with your first choice application. You cannot buy points after the April 6th deadline (first draw).

  • @Recruitcreative

    The easiest way to explain it is you can only receive one A coded tag per species. You can not obtain two A list tags. B list tags are different. You can receive a B list tag even if you already have an A list tag. You can get any combination of C list tags. Most desirable tags are A list tags.

    Make sure you let all the NResidents know how overcrowded the OTC units before they spend $800 and a week's of vacation to rub elbows with a thousand other guys from WI, PA,GA,TX,..............you get the point

    Hunted an OTC unit for 5 days last year and only ran into an outfitter with his guided hunter. There are definitely a lot of crowded units but there are a lot of places to get away from the crowds as well. OTC units are definitely not the best option when it comes to success but it's the best opportunity to elk hunt for most non residents who are starting out.

    There are elk east of I25. But for out of state hunters, hunting public land, it definitely is not the place to look for them. We hunt east of I25 quite a bit for antelope/Mule deer, I have never seen an elk out there but I'm sure they are on some private farms

    So as a side note, the reason they have unlimited OTC for elk is because they know the success rate is extremely low. By the time you can hunt OTC, the elk are hard to find. You have to really work for them, hiking, spotting, it isn’t easy, that’s why the licenses are OTC and unlimited. They bank on 90% of people being unsuccessful. If it was easy their elk population would be decimated in a few years. And to be clear, you only lose your points if you draw your first choice.

  • @Recruitcreative

    Correct! I would be surprised if OTC success rates are even as high as 10%, for archery most sources I have found are closer to the 5% mark.

    What about the September all month archery limited draw? I pulled that this year in unit 80. How do you feel about that hunt? I can also put in for the refuge hunt, but that’s so flat, rough with a bow I think. I mean it doesn’t hurt to be able to hunt the refuge area as well as the rest of 80. Any thoughts on that hunt would be helpful.

    @dvskane1808 i believe 80/81 was OTC up until a couple of years ago. This means there will be pressure. I know some guys who have been pretty successful in those units. They hunt high, really high, and get way back in there in the roadless areas.

    I’ve been hunting Colorado since I was 8 and I’ve herd more and more over the years about dropping the otc tags and I just have to say what nobody looks at it the money we bring to Colorado and it helps the management out there but no one thinks about this I just think this is crap because it’s public land that means open to the public not just for locals if you want your own land to hunt buy it

    Alot of people feel the same way Bo. Their is a wave of out of state hunters that bring lots of revenue to the state. I see it both ways, residents deal with more and more hunters every year while bordering states are protecting their residents by limiting non resident tags to 10% quotas. There needs to be a middle ground

Plus so fine but why aren't they complaing about number of hunters that have moved there ? ? ? ?

    I'm a Colorado native. This is the number one reason why there are so many people running around in the mountains during hunting season its because all these youtube channels Nowadays telling all the out of stators all the inside info. When I was a young kid hunting here in my home state. You would hardly ever see an out of stater, Now it's hard to even get into animals because there's an out of state hunter on every freaking knob and hill... THANKS A LOT CHICAGO!!

    Well I made this video and I am a Colorado resident. The truth is we all have a right to get outdoors and hunt on public lands, regardless of state. There are many organizations trying to end hunting and limiting opportunities. As outdoorsman, We should be encouraging conservation and new people to hunt. It's the only way new generations will get to keep doing what we all love.

    true, while in GMU 11 back in November, saw a shitload of outta state plates, but they didnt know the CPW reported false numbers of estimated herds during the draw period so about 60% fewer tags were issued with higher numbers of reduced herd numbers for entire NW corner of the state ..... then in August, state announces they cutting 2 days off 3rd rifle in NW corner .... everybody we saw, said same story, no animals, no shots heard.... we left after 3 days

    This state is straight trash. Hunting, fishing, anything outdoors is Completely ruined by the continued overpopulation and money making focus of CPW, non resident hunters everywhere and impossible to get away from, lack of controlling tags given out every season resident and non resident. Unless you have at least ten pref points or know someone with a lot of private property good luck. And now with the liberal left victory of introducing wolves this Winter is another issue we hunters will have to deal with in the next few years as the pack grows and spreads. Very unfortunate.....

    In your opinion, what western state does a good job handling these issues? Colorado is beginning to cut tags (eliminating OTC opportunities). And adjust the resident vs non-resident tag allotment.

  • @JrL25

    @JrL25

    IMO, Wyoming does a much better job! They have listened to the resident hunters complain over the past several years regarding the non resident hunters and as of this new year Wyoming will now only sell 10% of their big game tags to non residents. Also, in order to hunt national forest in Wyoming you need an outfitter or guide to do so. I am not buying that CO is going fix any of the constant ongoing issues that we resident hunters continue to face. I have heard rumors of OTC tags going away but haven't seen anything legit yet, it's too big of a money maker for CPW. Preference point system is an absolute joke in this state, there are more practical common sense and fair ways to limited draw areas. @@Recruitcreative

  • @Recruitcreative

    @Recruitcreative

    @JrL25 I also like how Wyoming protects its residents. One huge difference though is the general population differences in each state. Wyoming has way less people which means less people hunting. For the OTC tags in Colorado, there have already been several units that have been removed from the OTC list. So the assertion that nothing has been done is wrong. Colorado has more elk than any other state, it's an opportunity state, meaning everyone regardless of residency status has a chance to hunt elk. I think that is a great thing and hope it does not change

    @Jeremy Olson we never mentioned any specific locations or blow up anyone's spot. Everything we cover is public information. If you can't be successful because other hunters have the same information as you, then you need to look into your own preparation. That's public land hunting. If you don't like a level playing field, I'd suggest buying a farm and a real tall fence!

    This is ignorant. You're just nitpicking issues once they answer your complaint. All this video did was explain an incredibly complicated process. The people with zero points looking to learn more were already going to hunt here. None of this video is "at the expense of the animals". That's word salad because you dislike people being educated regarding hunting in Colorado. take this down please, last winter was a disaster with elk/deer herds drastically reduced. or at least update your info, the draw application is pure luck, like a lottery .... there are no tricks to beating the system, I have known people to apply for 12-15 years with no luck while others like me, get a tag first try. its pure luck, no tricks to beating the odds ..... this system in colorado really sucks anyway, especially the whitetail only hunt in December, damn joke, all CPW wants is to rid all whitetail from colorado instead of managing it, just like northern pike, a true gamefish most anywhere except colorado where they have bounties and no limits .... • @Recruitcreative

    We will not take the video down. The draw in Colorado is based on a preference point system. Meaning the applicant with the most points receives the tag. If there are multiple applicants with the same amount of points and not enough tags, it goes to a random draw. There are no tricks to "beating" the system, however being knowledgeable about the process helps hunters make more informed decisions that will help them draw tags.
