The Best Swiss Rolex Explorer & Seiko Alpinist Alternative Under $900 - Nivada Grenchen Antarctic 35

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What do the US Navy, an Omega Constellation in the Godfather movies, a Rolex Explorer, John Carpenter's The Thing, the Seiko Alpinist, and some of the most iconic watches of all time have in common? Today we find out, with a look at a 2023 reissue of one of the most elegant field watches I've ever experienced. In this video, I review the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic 35mm, a modern interpretation of a design first launched in the early 1950s. I analyze its specifications, design evolution, and deep history, along with its positives and negatives, to find out why so many people have made mistakes in understanding this watch, and why it is the most underrated, Swiss made, do it all alternative to its more famous rivals from Seiko and Rolex. What do you think of the watches in this video? Please share in the comments.

I can’t watch Teddy. I feel like he’s the guy TGV is always talking about with him becoming an official dealer for many brands. I simply don’t believe his opinions of the watches. Of course he’s going to say good things about whatever watch he’s reviewing simply because he sells them in his store and shop.

I just picked up the Seiko SJE085 1959 Alpinist reissue (the one with the bund strap), but the Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic with the four triangular indices and the black dial/white lume was a VERY close second. As I got the new-in-box 1959 Alpinist for almost half its MSRP, it was an offer I couldn't refuse; even outside of the fact it's a watch that had been on my radar for since it came out two years ago, only being held back by the $2900 price tag. Circumstances just happened to align and it was meant to be. Zero regrets. Even so, I will eventually own a Nivada Grenchen one day. I love what they're doing in the industry and find their designs far more interesting than the usual fare the bigger Swiss brands put out these days.

Your cross-wipe from the lume shot to daylight - chef's kiss! 1982 version of 'The Thing' is the best, hands down. But I still appreciate the 1951 version and even the 2011 version. The 1951 by Hawks and Nyby holds up better overall, but I'm able to look past the failings of the 2011 version and appreciate it as a lead-in to the 1982 masterwork. I re-watch each of them ever October and the 1982 version keeps serving up new details to obsess over. Who was the first to be infected? Who's infected at the end? Why do these details still nag at me? Great review as always! Beautiful watch.

    13 күн бұрын

@@AxLWake All three movies are based on "Who Goes There" by John W. Campbell, Jr. They share the same/similar titles as well. Also, all three share simiar settings and key plot elements. So referring to them as different versions of the same story feels warranted to me. I do recognize that the 2011 version of the story serves as a lead in to the 1982 version. You could make a case for 2011 being Part 0 & 1982 being Part 1 - together they cover the discovery of the Thing and its final(?) destruction. The 1951 version is perhaps the odd man out, as it omits the biological duplication that was a central element in "Who Goes There".

Great video T, love the added infographics. Your dictation, photography, horological knowledge Is all class. I think your style would be great for a long-form documentary-style one off. Perhaps a deep dive that encompasses the history of whatever you felt like making, within It’s entirely. You could be a great educator and I can’t wait to see what you work on next. I trust your artistic vision wholly. I really enjoyed the shift In music and energy between sections, It gives breathing room for those more intense sections, creating a nice sense of flow. The storytelling alone Is enough to interest me. You could talk about the production of textiles and I’d be interested. But, there Is something to keeping videos succinct and tight, so that kind of project would take an exponentially greater amount of time, so you have to consider the cost of your time greatly. On a side note: I’m saving up money for my grail, a Casio Oceanus T200. It’s the perfect meld between modernity In It’s functionality, while still being handcrafted In Yamagata using their own Zaratsu technique. I couldn’t be more excited, I’m loving my new job, and I’m going back to school this year to learn ASL, Spanish, and Sicilian Italian. Tanto amore a tutti voi! Cheers and love to my fellow gentry.

The indices remind me of the arrowhead ones from the 50's and 60's Omega's (not sure if they were commonly used by other brands in that time - and I now see you addressed this in the vid) they look so, so good. The fatter, larger indices work so well, and in current watches they don't appear too often which is a pity. I've been checking some vintage watches but I'm not there yet. This looks like an alternative with a bit more security. The indices look "gold" but they aren't (eggshell doesn't have those). Dauphine hands too, my gosh. So... Constellation with arrow heads, pie pan, dog legs, not knowing what I'm getting myself into... Or... the same vibe with current tech and QC. This is hard. Oh! They do have stainless steel case with gold indices, black dial though. Looks very nice..... But like you said, white or eggshell seems to be more appropriate.

Brilliant presentation, as always. This watch is so close to my ideal watch. A tad larger, more water resistance, the thinner version of that font, and I don't think I'd need another watch.

What a beautiful watch from such a classy brand, created in the golden age! Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the Antarctic genre, of which I was less familiar. Looking forward to your next insight into this wonderful interest we all share on here.

Good sales job T! I now want one! My father exchanged his NG for a Breitling in 1951, I wish I had the NG. BTW, love the shoulder flashes; the subtle British Army special forces stealth UJ, and the "Bonjourno! Sono Italiano!" Tricolore. Brilliant!

One thing I learned during my journey is that alternatives don't work for me. It's gotta be the real McCoy 💯 but I would rock the hell out of the F-77. Next stop is either a Sinn 144stsa or a Sinn Space chronograph 142. Excellent video brotha 👌

The eggshell dial with white luminova is very tempting; maybe on a beads of rice bracelet, to get around the spring bar issue.

I love what NG have been doing recently and this watch is no exception. For me personally though this one isnt something I'd wear. Hard to put a finger on what it is exactly, but I'd go for the Lorier Falcon, spring for the Rolex Explorer, or even pick up a Smith's Everest.

Superb as always - top notch narration and B roll. To say nothing of the editing! I have a 70s Nivada Antarctic Sea 200m dive watch which I love. Green sunburst dial, tritium lume that's turned terracotta and the very fun penguin on the caseback. It was only $225 and is a doddle to service as it's powered by an ETA 2472. That sort of vintage value makes it hard to consider the new releases. One other thought - I'd say the Alpinist is a classic 90s watch with retro styling as the 50s original was only in production for a short time and was aesthetically quite different - not green and no cathedral hands. Likewise the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date, a consciously retro, anti-quartz watch launched in the early 80s.

I have the original one with the solid gold medallion on the back depicting Admiral Byrds camp. It's also a chronometer grade movement and is marked as such on the dial . Found it in a coin shop for 35.00 . Its my favorite watch because of the history behind it.

I also hope you have a better experience in the future and thank you for sharing that, it helps me keep informed of how brands like this operate and I will certainly take it into consideration when doing future videos on them. Fantastic review - I've been hoping you'd cover this one. A very charming piece at a price that makes it fairly reasonable to roll the dice, negatives in mind. I'm partial to rather small watches, given my rather small wrists, so this one may be just right for me.
