The BEST Studio Monitor We've EVER Used | Part 2: DRIVERS

Музыка

⚠PLEASE NOTE: This video was filmed in October 2022 when Volt was moving premises, their lead time is usually 4-6 weeks⚠
In part 2 of our monitor mini series we look at the driver choices we made - the BlieSMa T25S-6 tweeter, M74S-6 mid driver, Dayton Audio RS225-4 and RS315-HO bass drivers, and how we got there. We also discuss how the Trinnov MC-Pro paid an unusual but valuable role! Huge thank you's go to Paul Mortimer of Emerging UK, Doug Hunt and Dan Taylor of Doug Hunt Sound & Light, Jes Kerr, Oliver Horn, the expert team at Sound Imports, Stanislav Malikov from BlieSMa, Nigel Rolph and FlopCat (of course). In part three we'll look at cabinet design and how it all went together, so stay tuned!

Hi Guys we audiophiles definitely want to hear Stanislavs Interview as well on driver choices for studio use or high end Hi FI use. Can you please provide what ancillary equipment one would need to use with these speakers at home. Most important thing what is the PRICE for a pair of them ?

  • @pricedlx

I’ve worked in “Hi-Fi” since I was 18. I’ve been on a mission to find a speaker that sounds like an ATC. But not at ATC prices. For my home I wanted to A/B them with my Sonus Faber that I absolutely love. But there is a massive gulf between listening for enjoyment critically and that of listening critically to find errors in a recording to resolve. Put simply- people actually like distortion for enjoyment. I’ve also gone into DIY and am a Parts Express fanboy for their cost to value. I can’t wait for the next vid. As this is way more satisfying that going on a forum and watching children (mentally) call each other names.

Thanks! We used our ATC SCM200 as a benchmark for decided whether ours are a good competitor, and I think we can honestly say we're favouring the extra detail of the BlieSMa mids. They'll be a fraction of the price for more detail!

Ok, you officially have my attention :) I have been working on computer aided crossover design since the mid 80's and anytime someone can bring in serious measuring equipment and not be able to locate the crossover points by amplitude or phase response definitely has my curiosity piqued ! I was a studio musician/engineer/producer in the 70's/80's -- Studer's/Neve's/JBL 4350's/UREI 813's, like that. I have heard ATC's and they are definitely a cut above, no doubt. I am also a silk dome tweeter guy, and generally a closed box (2nd order) low end guy, even though you tend to get worse group delay around the crossover point because of the slower 2nd order phase rotation, the old bass player in me loves that tight sealed box bass -- I know, I know next episode, can't wait !! Am also aware you can over damp a 4th order ported box to get rid of some of that dreaded resonant corner sound, where it takes the big dive :) Was aware of the Guzauski-Swists, though I have never heard them. I am retired now and have been running KH310's and a KH810 for the last 9 years, they are fairly neutral, but really lack dispersion, and just aren't as detailed as I'd like. I can't afford ATC's for my basement studio, but I do have access to an extremely accomplished enclosure fabricator. I am an electronics guy from way back and could easily handle that end. Also have been a computer programmer for close to 40 years, software is my thing these days. Assuming I can procure the Hypex plate amps and the the drivers, are you planning to offer the box and crossover specifications (at a price of course) to an ancient Canadian Senior who is still, for some unknown, unfathomable reason, chasing THAT sound ? :) :) Kudos to you for embarking on this adventure !!!

I forgot to comment on Discord that a nice thing the studio monitors market is missing is modularity, as in, buying 1 speaker an then upgrade from there it's analog inputs to a DSP based solution by just swapping the input module, or make a small 2 way cabinet sit atop a bass driver if you need to upgrade to 3 way+, and make the whole system work together. That would be a great innovation indeed.

I am so happy, guys! I was sure I could count on you. Now I know some good sources of new drivers. My past activity was too old and needed to be updated. My hifi box is made with a Dynaudio tweeter, Peerless mid and Seas woofer. And I always thought a cone mid was better than a dome one. Using lower frequency cut between woofer and mid. So I will find extremely challenging to build your monitor. I love that all dudes following you will get benefit from extremely accurate simulation with Trinnov to be transferred to Hypex crossover. This is really amazing! You rock! Keep on this way, please!

Dayton Reference Series woofers are a 'secret weapon' of a number of companies. In technical performance, they are truly excellent, and they are made in Taiwan - not China. There has been some variability in the tweeters of the Reference series due to a change from one supplier to another, but the supply of the Reference Series cone drivers is stable and has been with the same company since the beginning - while I was still in college. And if you compare the parameters and measurements from those early drivers to today's production drivers, you'll find they are not just similar, but practically the same, so there has been no drift in properties even though they have been in production for a long time.

I love your videos and I am looking forward to seeing part 3 of your journey to your own DIY studio monitor. However, I believe that your choice of woofer could be better. You should try a B&C 12PS100 instead of the 8" Dayton. It will play in a 20l box tuned to 65hz, (-3db @65hz) has 93db sensitivity and since it is actually a PA driver, it can handle 700W which means that at studio levels it will have zero distortion (it can alternatively get some EQ to play down to 40Hz in a 40L box tuned to 39Hz). It can even play in a 15l box tuned to 65Hz with F3 @72Hz which is still good for a satellite speaker crossed at 80hz. Also with a sensitivity of 93db, it will be easier to drive without too much power, thus even less distortion and FR from 80 till 600Hz is +/-1db At around 250euros it may be more expensive than the Dayton driver, but it is still cheap for what it does. Yes they will not be full range, but I believe they will not need to be as soon as you have at least 4 adequate subwoofers for the low end. Another suitable woofer could be the 12" SB Acoustics SB34NRXL75-8 which will play down to 45Hz (F3) in a 45L box tuned to 27Hz (F10), and quite a bit lower than that in a larger box. BTW, I hope not many French people watch this video. They won't be happy when they hear you say "trois" for French (pronounced twaa, or t(r)waa, with the known French pronunciation of R)

I have been fortunate to hear live music in good halls, in the control room, and through the recording chain. I'm looking forward to open sourcing this project. You surely know Audio Science Review. They would be a good addition to your UK-local technical consulting engineers.

Have you Tryed the “ peerless by tymphany “ drivers yet. The 350 F have a lot of high praise and I bought two to build subs for my studio. They also make a lot of mud and high drivers that spec impressive

This is great knowledge. I‘m happy to see someone chose to go for almost exactly the parts that I’ve assembled for my studio monitor project independently. I‘m set with the same Hypex FA253 model, the Bliesma T34B Beryllium tweeter, the M74B Beryllium mid dome & a 10“ Dayton Audio RS270P-A Woofer. I would absolutely love to get some more in-depth knowledge on the the filter design & time alignment of the drivers to have a similarly good result. Can I contact you guys by any chance?🙌🏼
