This has got to be the strangest Phoibos yet... and perhaps the best-built Phoibos since the Great Wall. With a heavy-duty stainless steel case, Selita SW200 movement, Ton of lume, and enhanced Anti-Magnetic properties, the Vortex is a watch to contend with.

Cut on the minute hand would have been a great design choice. Or extend the skeletonized section just a little further so that it the arrow doesn't cover the chaptering and put a little notch or engrave a line on the back end of the arrow to point to the the chapter ring marks.

The sellita SW200-2 is based on the ETA 28-24 - 2, it's an improved version of infact with double Ridge teeth on the sprocket to improve its life span. The Sinn 104 uses this movement. Given the price, the phoibos is a good desk diver but I can't imagine many people wanting a watch THIS BIG if they can't dove with it purposely due to the minute markers being obscured.

I love Phoibos! I have the Wavemaster and it is one of my favorite watches! I also have Seiko baby tunas and an Arnie so this new Phoibos resonates. I would not consider it a tool watch however unless it had drilled lugs and aftermarket band options which it does not. So it's kinda like a work of art. I also think skeleton like hands sometimes hinder legibility. Omega Seamaster pulls it off but this particular dial layout does not. With that being said, I'm sure many Phoibos fans will love it and the price is great for a high beat movement with 15 layers of awesome lume!

I have to admit, I love the design. 💪 But I do have some gripes, similar to yours Shane. The legibility and precision od time setting. They shouldn't have made the hands skeletonised, but should have made a cut out over the minute track.

I really wish they would have gone the budget friendly route with this design. The short comings (apropos statement with this watch) would have been easier to overlook. Plus a lower price point and I would have purchased this all day every day and twice on Sunday.

Ah, Phoebos: I *do* love their just-outside-the-box enthusiasm; I just wish at least half the resulting watches resonated with my sensibilities, and this one certainly doesn't do it for me. OTOH, that upcoming GMT catches my eye, and the case size sounds just-right, so I'll be looking forward to your take on it when it hits the scene. Well-done review, as usual.

You have become one of my favorite watch reviewers. Excellent and unbiased review. Your OCD and mine coincide on that minute hand. Even though I know a mechanical movement will gain or lose time each day, when I set it I want the ability to line up the minute hand precisely on the marker. My favorite watch is my deep lake Seiko Alpinist with the dauphine hour and minute hands. The minute hand extends several mm past the minute track, which makes getting it dead-on a guess. The difference is noticeable when you see the hand approaching and leaving the markers once the watch is running. Arrgh!! Your recommendation of a simple design fix is something Phoibos should have noticed. I have had Phoibos on my radar for several months now. They are mostly real lookers. I like the looks of this watch too. But your criticisms of it point out aspects I don’t like, especially at the above $500 price tag.

Thank you! These days you never know what Phoibos is cooking up. They are trying to be different, and have their own style. Which is great, but I think they need to do some focus group testing beforehand with their crazier designs. They have a facebook group with dedicated fans, so it would be easy to do.

We all seem to want some creative new design, but this one is really too big and strange for me. It is hard to create very much new that still has some classic but interesting looks within the confines of a watch case and dial that fits well on many wrists. To me, the closest Phoibos to that mix of new and old was the Nebula. I probably should have bought the blue/white version of that watch. I only watched to the end of this video because your evaluations are always so spot on!

@@RelativeTime Thanks for replying. I didn't know about smart phones having strong magnets in them. Does this mean I should think seriously about minimizing the habit of holding my smart phone in my hands while I wear a non-shielded watch? Because nearly all of my wristwatches, including some with Swiss movements, are non-shielded watches that I typically wear all day. Does the habit of wearing watches while holding smart phones cross your mind at all? Do you lean toward any simple rules to reduce the likelihood of your movements getting magnetized?

Umm....yeah. I am an Arnie guy, but this one really doesn't speak to me. I give them credit for doing something out of left field, so best of luck to them. I'm totally down with what you said about the minute hand. I thought the same thing the moment I saw it. If they had made a cutout or extended the opening past the markers and put a small hash mark on the back of the arrow, it would have really shown a degree of care in the design that seems to be lacking here. I know you love the Great Wall, but it too feel just a tad "random" in terms of overall design to me.

Their watches simply aren't designed holistically.

Another 'compressor style' (not a real supercompressor) watch, but one that fails spectacularly for its aesthetics when compared to e.g. the Eagle Ray. As they say, it's 'unconventional'.
