    Indeed - probably why Disney nuked it! They didn't like being overshadowed by the supplementary material (Lukas himself on the other hand had no problem with this, hell the guy worked with writers, comic-artists, game-devs etc. to make a lot of these products (while reserving the right to change things later on, but truly: He never did declare stuff non-canon outright, so he never felt threatened, which shows that he isn't/wasn't a close minded fool like those people at Disney!)) :(

    The biggest problem I had with Kotor II, and it is among my favorite RPGs, is their where never any good or nuanced replies for your character. Nothing even remotely worthy of discourse with Kreia, you were literally a strawman for her to cut down in the dialog options.

    Sock Pupet1984 I agree. She would go very deep and talk fairly well about these philosophical concepts. The philosophy itself, story, and meaning, were still shown well, but there were quite a few moments where I felt like I wanted to say something other than the options given to me. ^Granted, this is true in every game where you are given dialogue options, but KOTOR II was the worst at it-despite it being one of my favorites of these games.

    Um...the reason why those other KOTOR female characters aren't called "Mary Sues" is because they apparently have real TRAINING. They know how to use a lightsaber and the force. They were TAUGHT. Rey wasn't taught at all, yet defeated a skilled and trained dark side user. It matters not that Kylo was injured. He barely defeats Finn and then gets his ass kicked by a girl that he should have easily beaten.

    This video did not go in the direction I had anticipated, although I enjoyed it very much. I was expecting more of a discussion of the main character, who causes a wound within the force, after losing so many people with whom she has a connection. Kreia wants to open a larger wound, to kill or disconnect the force entirely and emancipate the denizens of the universe (seems very "god is dead", or something like that, the details are not clear to me, it has been so long since I played the game). I also thought more would be made of the triad of sith lords in the game: Nihilus who is so hungry for power that he is quite literally being consumed by his hunger, and Sion who chooses a life of eternal torment rather than permitting himself to die a mortal death, by willing his continued existence. The dynamics of the Jedi Council are also very interesting, particularly when they are all again reunited, and turn on the main character, considering them too dangerous to be left alive. There is so so much to be made of KOTOR 2, it really is a testament to the narrative richness of the game.

    Tom T From another in-depth study video I watched analyzing Kreia, it seems more that she's a very active, if not very elusive in how to tackle her goal, nihilist. She sees the bigger picture that almost both sides of the force innately ignore, is that both crave control fueled by the Force. How to do so, whether it'd be passive peace or aggressive domination, is irrelevant when in the end the Force is recognized as a "living entity" and has shown in the grand scheme of things planning very roundabout ways to "balance out" the 2 sides. If nothing, she is the true manifestation of this world's evil, to its core, because she essentially chooses to strip away a "force" that governs the world she lives in in all its aspects. Or in the bigger picture of things, to the powerful groups that can shape the galaxy known as the Jedi and Sith.

  • @georgedang449

    @georgedang449

    7 жыл бұрын

    Kreia is not "true manifestation of this world's evil." Quote from Kreia "I hate how the force seems to have a will of its own, killing countless trillions just to achieve a measure of balance." The is the same realization that Luke in The Last Jedi came to. The force has a will of its own, whenever you introduce light, the force will counterbalance it by introducing an equal and opposite darkness, creating conflict and death in the process. The difference is Luke chose nihilism, to give up, in order to avoid conflict produced by the Force while trying to balance itself. While Kreia chose to defy the Force and fight it, kill it, so that she can change the galaxy for the better, without the Force negating it.

  • @Eckskalibur

    @Eckskalibur

    7 жыл бұрын

    George Dang I suppose "true manifestation of this world's evil." is an exaggerated title. More so a fitting title would be the antagonist to the Force. True, evil in the end is subjective when you look at the bigger picture of what Kreia's actions would lead to if she succeeded in her plans, but it doesn't change the fact that on the side of both the passive and aggressive sides of Force users who are deemed to be leading forces of change and status quos of their galaxies, it wouldn't be off the batting range that Kreia were to be titled as an ultimate villain, at least when seeing her through the simplest and top layer of her character. Don't misunderstand though, I completely agree that she is more complex when looked thoroughly into and could be deemed as a true hero to all in her galaxy, but when compared to the history and lore of the Star Wars universe, both canon and Legends, she seems to antagonize near everything that the galaxy simply accepts as fact that the Force is an integral part of life.

    I agree, Disney can learn so much from KOTOR 2. It was an excellent deconstruction of the franchise. HOWEVER~ I'm not too sure you properly understand exactly what the game is getting at. It's not saying good and evil don't exist, quite the opposite. It reinforces that dichotomy of Star Wars while also acknowledging the lack of a normal moral spectrum like the one we have in real like (Definite evil and good at both ends, with grey stuff in the middle). The conclusion the game comes to is really fucking clever- The Force is the real bad guy, because by using it, it removes one's free will. From there, the person is left with two choices, either forsake humanity and become selfless, or embrace humanity and become selfish agents of Evil. The Jedi are only "good" and the Sith are only "evil" because there is no alternative. This game addresses that, asks why it is that way, and comes to the conclusion that the Force is the reason.

    @Aaron Jacobson Oh you play as a grey Jedi in Kotor 2? Interesting. Can you elaborate further on how you played as a grey Jedi? Like what choices/morality actions you did in game etc. And if you literally kept your force alignment at the middle or you're a light side that still do neutral/morally questionable acts? You see, I've always liked the grey jedi ever since I heard about them but I always play light side because: one, for practical reasons since being at max alignment give you a nice stat bonus. For instance, if you're a consular/jedi master and at max light side you gain a whopping + 6 bonus to Wisdom lol. And two, I felt that even if your playing light side the exile still feels like a gray Jedi since there are more neutral options compared to Kotor 1 and if you did do a morally questionable/dark side act you can make up for it by doing good/light side acts later on in the game.

  • @Esakosarara

    You're so wrong, the Game NEVER says the jedi are good because they have no choice, actually the jedi in kotor 2 are huge dicks and cowards. Also, if the force forced them (no pun intended) to be good, none of them would fall to the dark side...

  • @BigUriel

    @BigUriel

    @@Spectre1301 The fact that being on either end of the spectrum makes you more powerful than staying neutral kind of ties into the plot if you think about it: the Force is playing both sides and it wants you to pick one, and rewards you for it.

    The problem is: The Force isn't the "bad guy" here... Is the sith/jedi dogma surrounding, despite what Kreia belief, she herself ended up point this out in the game, she said that about acts of charity / agression, and by saying that she left open a third choice. Also, theres another character from the same age that point this out with a more positive outlook: Jolee Bindo in kotor 1. You don't need to be a jedi or a sith, Bindo say this to Bastila and ask her to see him not as a jedi, but as just another companion that happens to have a lightsaber and force powers. So yeah! There is a choice beyond the jedi or sith, is usually called grey jedi altough in the case of Kreia, you should argue that is more like a grey sith. Even Luke is more like a grey sith than an actual jedi. Theres other characters in kotor 1 that are more or less grey, in the sith academy in the first game you find a whole bunch of them.

    KOTOR 2 was a brilliant story that, unfortunately, got rushed out the door. Thus having the end truncated and fizzling worse than Mass Effect 3. But damn, was playing through it fun as hell. "Statement: Oh, yes. My master had quite the collection of tortured individuals that seemed unable to confront their basic personality conflicts. Let me cite some specific examples. Mockery: '[Carth] Oh master! I do not trust you! I cannot trust you, or anyone, ever again!' Mockery: '[Bastilla] Oh master, I love you, but I hate all you stand for. But I think we should press our slimy, mucous-covered lips together in the cargo hold!' Conclusion: Such pheromone-driven human responses never cease to decrease the charge in my capacitors and make me wish I could press a blaster pistol to my behavior core and pull the trigger."

    Considering the role she played in the order, and her very deep philosophy - I'd have to throughly disagree with you. She's an INTP, someone who prefers to observe and consider carefully before rendering a judgment which they are willing to part with if it proves incorrect. She's fully willing to change her mind, as her story clearly shows. Far more so than most all the other Jedi. And so, I say she's an INTP, centered around philosophy. While Palpatine is an INTJ, greatly focused on results, status and changes in the material realm. That is actually the truth of it aswell. INTJ's are generally mentally immature and highly emotional, they just generally suppress that emotion to deal with situations. INTP's are generally very mature, truly calm and collected to a fault. And INTP is generally slow to act, although they are often quick to adapt to new information. But they will choose to spend a lot of time to analyze all the data, and simulate possible scenarios(so as to avoid misfortune). Many are HIGHLY skilled at this, to the point where it can seem like they read your mind, see through lies and predict the future. Some of them are very accomplished conmen, although they generally hate lies as it is flawed data to them, which corrupts the simulations/calculations they make(and wishes for others to make). They are the most logical of all the personality types. And Kreia is clearly one. There's a reason a INTJ is often applied to villains, it is because they are in some ways rather shallow, even though they are smart. Their goals are highly "real world" oriented, they want immediate and tangible results. Plagueis is one of the rare few INTP's who operates almost like an INTJ. He is a real philosopher at heart, and not as quick to judge as his master was(in spite of being a dark lord). When faced with a large issue, it is the INTJ way to make small plans for the immediate situation and start working on it at once. While an INTP will take a step back and first try to work out the big picture, and then try work out plans to fit this bigger plans. An INTP is basically someone who is concerned with more layers, while an INTJ is more focused on the situation at hand(though both are generally incredibly smart). The INTJ is more goal oriented, and the INTP is more about trying to figure out how the world works. INTP=Philosopher, Logician, Scientist, Advisor, The Power Behind the Throne. INTJ=Engineer, Architect, Battlefield Commander, Blitzkrieg Strategist, Dictator. Revan is the closest to a meld you could probably ever come. I can not place him as INTJ, or INTP. Considering how he sometimes steps back, and reconsiders his stance - I would like to say INTP(at least his gray/light side version). He also often speaks of philosophy and abstract goals. But he is also heavily focused on real world effects, and the one to go and face the problems head on. His Dark Side version was also quite willing to accept most any collateral damage, and even during his early days as a Jedi in the Mandalorian wars - He was quite ready to overlook philosophical issues with his actions(in order to reach his goals). In the end I'd have to say that Revan truly is the ultimate half-way between the two. Just as he stands between the light and the dark side of the force.

    Really enjoyed this. I had really hoped that TFA writers might have played the KOTOR games and would take inspiration from them. As you said, the games really did have a unique atmosphere - the designers managed to perfectly capture the vastness and eeriness of the world where a few Sith Lords reign by isolating themselves in corners of a fragmented galaxy. I loved how talking with Nihilus, Kreia and Sion would give you the sense that time passing was utterly insignificant, as it would be to them. Someone should make a kickstarter for KOTOR 3!

    Matt Hew Except that the producers, directors and Di$ney only wanted to use the Star Wars brand as a ca$h cow, not a means to tell a good story. Whether they played the Kotor series or not, they still had the greedy mindset, and disdain for the fans. I always wanted the Thrawn trilogy on film, but NOOOO...

    I liked Rogue One because it, even flawed as it is, did some original stuff with the Star Wars Universe. It made the war feel real, and it did a good job at showing how much sacrifice went into rebelling against the Empire. We also saw new places, learnt new things about the universe and all of that while covering a plot hole. In summary, it expanded the universe. And that's why I dislike The Force Awakens: 1- It copied the story of A New Hope, and set a plot that is the perfect foundation for the next two movies to copy Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. 2- But at least it gave us new places, right? Not really. It copied Tatooine and called it Jakku, took Endor and gave it smaller trees and a lake and called it Takodana, did so much of a good job copying Yavin 4 that I didn't realize that planet was actually a new one called D'qar, and fused Hoth and the Death Star together to create the Starkiller base. 3- The prequels show that, while you could see certain similarities between some ships, like the ARC-170 and the X-wing or the V-wing and the TIE fighter, they actually did evolve in those 20 years that separate the prequels and the originals. Rogue One reused the ships and starfighters from the original trilogy for obvious reasons, but at least they gave us a new gunship, the U-wing. The Force Awakens has no excuse for reusing every fucking ship. The star destroyer, the X-wing and the TIE fighters are practically the same. No originality at all. 4- The characters are boring. Rey is Luke with boobs and a Mary Sue complex. Finn is kinda likeable, but I don't get why they expect us to believe a soldier trained from birth is gonna start crying in his first mission and have a completely regular personality, instead of something you'd expect from a brainwashed soldier. I like Poe, but he's just Han Solo. BB-8 is a overly cute R2-D2. The only interesting character is Kylo Ren, because he's probably the only kind of original thing in the movie. PS: Sorry, I know this is kinda out of topic, but it really is a shame the new trilogy is looking so lame when the Star Wars Universe has the potential to be so much more.

    The Lizard Wizard I agree with you. What I enjoyed about Rogue one was that is showed a darker part of Star Wars, like a grey area that fans don't get to see. Kotor 1 is good but it was like a typical Star Wars film, saw good vs bad. Rogue one showed a grey area that reminded fans of Kotor 2.

    Most Star Wars fans would hate KOTOR 2 to be turned into a movie, because Kreia is not a powerful force user, who decided to take a neutral stance and not commit to the Jedi or Sith cause. She didn't want the protagonist to be free from the petty power strugles between Jedi and Sith and think for himself/herself. She became a Jedi, a Sith and then started to hate the force so much, that she wanted to destroy it and every force sensitive creature in the universe. Her philosophy actually makes a lot of sense, but the implications would make a lot of fans hate a KOTOR 2 movie, because it'd go against everything they love about this franchise, which is why I love this game so much.

    I believe the reason KOTOR II wasn't as successful as the first one was not because of the time rush per se, but because of how deep it was. The first one was a pretty black and white, pure good vs pure evil grand scale story, like the movies. The second on the other hand was much more deep and complex as you mentioned. Also much more raw and real. I think the complexity turned away some more casual types. All that being said I love them both and the second game more so.

    And I think that's why movies don't do well when they're deep and philosophical. It's just cemented now that that's not what the general population wants; if it was, then most indy films would be doing a lot better. Granted, most indy films aren't exciting to begin with, but one could argue that, given a Marvel-like budget, anything can be prettied up, but pretty doesn't necessarily mean good or deep.

    You know I always considered myself a Star Wars Fan but now with TFA and Rogue One out, I realize that I don´t really like 6 out of 8 Star Wars Films. I think Star Wars has suffered the same fate as Star Trek. Once you dip your toe into the world of commercialization and focus groups, it becomes hard to get out of it again because now you´ve reached a much wider audience which demands this exact kind of approach. That is why we will never see truly great Star Wars and Star Trek films on the big screen ever again. It´s just not what modern day spectacle obsessed audiences are craving for. Especially the current nerd culture that cares more about brand names and familiar superficial imagery than about the quality behind the brand, has to take a big junk of the blame for this.

    Kreia is the best female character in all of Star Wars imo. Mostly because of the way she sees not just the force, but everything that happens around her. She doesn't see things as "evil" or "good", or the force as "light side" or "dark side". To Kreia, everything has consequenses and the force is just the force. Another cool thing is that she hates the force, because she thinks it manipulates the user to do as it pleases. Disney has a lot to learn.

However I'd like to remind people that star wars was originally for children. So the films need to be made in a way that everyone can appreciate, which is very difficult these days. Fingers crossed we get expanded remakes of these games.

Anakin falls to the Dark Side doing what I think most of us would do given the situation: Protecting the ones we love. It isn't portrayed in the best way, granted, but that grey area between good and evil is still present and evident in the Prequels.

Both laser and scuba are acronyms, therefore they are pronounced as a word. If the letters were pronounced separately (such as FBI, CIA, UFO, etc.) it would be called an initialism. Whether KOTOR is an acronym or an initialism is really unimportant, but every time I've heard the creators speak of it (Chris Avellone, Feargus Urquhart, etc.) they have pronounced it as if it was an acronym (KOH-tore).

    Now I miss KOTOR and KOTOR 2. Just the music alone makes me nostalgic. I would have liked to see an Old Republic movie, before Disney took over the franchise.

    interesting video. I am not a gamer as such. But I love star wars, and found the last new movie just evoked nostalgia, rather than being a fresh new take. INFP here....

    Get KOTOR and KOTOR 2. You can get it on Mac and PC, and it plays like an old school school RPG

    Wow... Your speech is very well said. though I do have some hard time to follow through your words as they are very uniquely placed. How do you manage to word them out as you did?

    That was brilliantly done and well thought out and I totally agree with you but it is sad that the amazing content in the star wars games, comics, and books will never see the big screen cuz that would be incredible and blow my mind as I nerd gasamed over the sheer beauty that is God like story telling come to life in such a monumental way but sadly it will probably never happen😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😖😤😒
