I remember installing back in the early 80's. Car subwoofers were unicorns back then. The most popular install was 4 JBL T545 6x9s on the back dash. If you had a 4 pack and a Jenson Booster, you were the top dog!

I remember back when I used to work at a beeper store, the owner started pushing car audio too. But he wouldn't buy name brand stuff unless you put down a down payment then he'd go pick it ip from his wholesaler. I installed countless Mustang Audio equaluzer/boosters, Pyramid equalizers and amplifiers, as well as Boss Audio and later Urban Audio and Pioneer subs.

Back around 1985 I recall calling a local audio place on the phone that did car audio as well and asked if they had 6X9, or 4X10 speakers that could go down to 60 Hz or lower. I was laughed at. Well at the time Pyle had 4X10 speakers they called woofers that went very low, 45Hz maybe. I bought them and bought tweeters from Radio Shack and mounted the tweeter on the grill of those speakers I put in my 1978 Chevy Monza rear deck. Power it with a power EQ and it was pretty nice. 5 or so years later one of them had a rubbing problem.(to much sun), and I went to a local car stereo shop tried the Pyramid 4X10 (way to stiff) took them back and got Pioneer 4X10'sand that were workable but way to easy to move, and without any box around them they moved out to far off the pole piece. I still have the other Pyle 4X10 and built a small little 16 watt Sub amp for it and sub box of my own design. Still sound good last I used it. I had to glob of the surround with silicon where it had torn or wore out the edge. That was before I know that soft edge could be replaced and still work well.

Big D, you outdid yourself on this one!! The video clip sampling and placement is off the charts!!! I’m dyin over here!!! I don’t know how many people I’ve seen over the years who think that the more speakers they have, the better the sound. The best sounding system that I have ever had utilized a pair of Cerwin Vega 5 1/4” components and a single Lanzar 8” subwoofer. This was all in the late 90’s. Thanks Big D!!
This might be the most epic car audio system on KZread!
Love the content! I have purhased a LOT of audio equipment after watching your vids. My sons accord is bangin hard. Thanks buddy, keep it up.

loved seeing the wiring, good video! low key hilarious.
So glad you did this video. Always wondered about these speakers when I would see them at the flea market
In the 80s i had a pioneer component system , underdash tuner and equalizer, and a gm-120 amp hooked to pioneer ts or tx 698's. Amazing sound and powerful as anything back in its day. We tried to fry them 6x9s to bohemian rhapsody many times but they were tough as a $2 ham steak. Great video Big D, keep it coming.

Haha!! I haven’t thought about those in years. Had a couple friends with those. They are literally what started me into the car audio world. Would love to see Big D test some of those monsters.
I had 2 6×9s in a box behind the seats in my pickup truck with 2 4 inch up front running of my alpine head unit and it sounds amazing!!!!!!!! The head unit was 40×4 so that says alot!!!!
I bought some 4-way, 5-driver 6x9s in the early 1990s for my dorm room that were actually pretty darn good. I couldn’t go all out for an exquisite set like these.
they are hekken friggin sick dude
First i loved it when i saw you were pairing them with the funky pups. Then you threw a curve ball with the McIntosh! Love it!

I bought my first car speakers at a flea market in 1978 for my first car, a 1965 Oldsmobile DelMont 88. They looked a lot like these! I think I paid $50 for them, a fortune for a factory worker in those days. I blew them up when I upgraded my amp. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I’m impressed they were all real drivers. That’s a W. my first car speakers I had were Craig v100s I think… they were red and yellow and they had 3 tweeters on them. (Got them from a neighbour) Only 1 of them was actually hooked up. And it was a coin type piezo driver under a membrane. The other 2 were fake membranes with nothing metal or conductive below. Produced 0 treble and they had probably 110db sensitivity at 2500hz but 80db at the rest of the spectrum. I love vintage speakers.
I do see a few Bluetooth audio connections there at 6:14. 🤣 I would send a picture if KZread would allow it in the comment section. Fantatic vidio as always..
Best speaker i have ever seen so far. :D Particularly the Crossovers are highly engineered!
brings back memories of shopping at kmart as a small child in the 80's
I do like how all those drivers are sealed from behind so the big midbass does not affect them. Amazing, Pioneer had some crazy looking 6x9's but these are from another planet
I never thought I'd see a shit to shinola setup so complete, but you did it brother. Godspeed.
need more flee market amps and speakers love these series
My hat’s off to you for featuring the silliest expression of the “multi-axial” theme. I wonder how many of those tweeters actually have wires going to them. I recall that some of the flea market 6x9’s had purely decorative tweeters. Many of us back in the day drove GM coupes that had 4x10s in the rear deck. My very first system featured a set of tri-axial Audiovox 4x10s that I was very proud of. It would be interesting to see a similar video of a set of 4x10s since they generally used the same motors as the 6x9s and would also try to cram as many drivers as they could on them.
@Fredrovicius
Ай бұрын
Near the end of the video I noticed that some of the tweeters have only one side hooked up - I was curious if those were somehow bridged between eachother because I was expecting at least a wire between the various negatives that were otherwise unhooked.
@2011joser
Ай бұрын
@@Fredrovicius I tore down a few like these back in the day and often only the “midrange” was actually a working driver. The others were were sometimes working piezo tweeters or just plain dummies with wires attached. They followed the pattern of flea market ghetto blasters.

A highlight of my afternoon to watch your presentation of these randomly spotlighted speakers from a place best forgotten sir! Yeah I think that what they meant by 2" voice cords is either 2 - 1" voice cords side by side or 1" above the woofer and 1" below the woofer to the terminals block and that's in my 2 cents on the matter. BTW excellent video review

Hell yeah, Dick Riculous here reporting some knowledge- do try your best to keep him around for us Big D! 😂 That McIntosh six channel is at the top end of my dreams by the way- one of these days when I can properly afford one, I'd love to own one of their power amplifiers... for both home & auto. I do wonder though if their build quality and potential for greatness is truly justified in the price tags? Shoot, those nine-way speakers most definitely are though! I mean, six by nines with kevlar injected surround? I wore body armor made of kevlar during my time in the Marines- so that surround's liable to be tough enough to handle a few rounds with some shrapnel to boot with a toughness like that! 😂 🤙
I'd ask for a peek at that 5 way crossover network, but I think we got it already.
Mr. Richard Riculous, for us hardcore car guys, could you give us the details on that beautiful blue paint job behind you? Thank you, sir.
