THE BEST RYU TRAINED FOR 25 YEARS TO FIGHT DAIGO IN ALPHA 3

In Japan, I had the honor to commentate an Alpha 3 exhibition between the best current Ryu versus vs Daigo, who is known to be RYU in general. Who wins here?! Will 25 years of playing the game able to beat the beast?

Daigo is 42 years old, has not played A3 seriously since the last national tournament in 2000 (23 years ago) Yet he looses a close set 10-7 to someone who has grinded the game ever since in a mirror? That should not happen, that is really impressive. Good stuff. Edit: Random fact, D44.BAS who is commentating with Justin is the only player to ever beat Daigo Umehara in a Alpha3 tournament (national A3 team tournament in 1999) during it's competative cycle (before it became a legacy game in 1999 when 3rd Strike supplanted it)

3S wasn't really the game that replaced A3 at the time. CvS2 kinda took that title. 3S was always sort of its own thing with its own community. I would also bear in mind that most of the people playing A3 all this time are used to a V-ISM-centric environment. So it's still mad impressive that Daigo could hang like this, but this isn't really the version of A3 that Igari's been grinding all this time. Daigo also had Masumi (one of the top Sak/Ryu players) training with him for several weeks before this, so he didn't go in totally cold.

@@KyokujiFGC That's sorta not true, sorta an over simplification, let me educate you abit. TLDR: CvS2 didn't come out until mid 2001 and if you go by attendance then it's Super Turbo that reigns surpreme between 2000-2003, read the rest for a detailed explanaiton. Between 1991 and 1999, the company that hosted all of the japanese arcade national tournaments was a magazine called Gamest. The magazine was cancelled in September 1999 and the last tournament they did was the national team tournament in A3 in early 1999. At this point the japanese tournament scene was all but dead, as it was entirely built opon Gamest tournaments, so everyone had to start from scratch and start building up their own tournaments again and at this point 3S comes out, something everyone even including Matt McMuscles & Maximillian does not consider when talking about why 3S didn't sell well All the comunities splinter off in the greater Tokyo area. D44.BAS's local arcade becomes the hub for A3 tournaments until CVS2 hits.. Nuki & Tokido's local arcade becomes the hub for 3S tournaments until CVS2 hits (and continues to hold 3S tournaments) Daigo retires the first time, as there is no more tournaments and he does not like 3S but his arcade would be the hub for Guilty Gear X from 2000 onwards. But the first community to thrive here is the Super Turbo community, as they had a headstart (their game had been dead since 1994) and in 2000 they hold their first edition of X-Mania that would spawn simular tournaments in 3S (COOP Cup) & A3 (can't remember what BAS called it) but the big gathering tournament between 2000 and 2003 is X-Mania (so it's kinda accurate to say the biggest Capcom title during this time is Super Turbo) Around this time the Japan vs USA 5on5 is held in 2000 where all the main game is chosen to be 3rd Strike, Not A3, Not ST, Not CVS1. The Japan tournament scene goes dark from here until 2003 when Tougeki SBO revives it again.

@@dyBBelyBTASTIC CvS2 came out in 2001, but Alpha 3 was still at EVO until 2002. Most of A3's core playerbase went to CvS2, which is why I mentioned it as replacing A3 moreso than 3S 'cause 3S was mostly a totally different group of players outside of the OGs who played every game.

@@KyokujiFGC You are correct. The only notable A3 player (in the US) who would go on to play S3 was Alex Valle (who played quite alot of 2nd Impact in the 90's and was, really good at it) but he would not pick up the game again until 2004. And the only notable A3 player (in Japan) to make the switch from A2~A3 to S3 was Onuki.

That was insane. It does go to show you, although Igari took this set, Daigo was able to come in playing at a high level because of all of his varied experiences across fighting games, including his solid ground game! Now if his match ups were not filtered then of course it wouldn't have been so revealing of a match.

I met Justin once...well I say met...what happened was I was chilling with some friends at an after evo event/house party waiting to use the bathroom and Justin walked out. I was like "hey you're..." but I had a brain fart and couldn't think of his name for a sec, and anyway he just walked by really fast like I wasn't even there anyway. I had to piss so bad I didn't follow. When I got into the bathroom somebody had taken the most fowl shit I ever encountered in my life. I don't mean like they didn't flush or anything...but the small was god awful. I swear it gave my nose nerve damage for the rest of that night and could like...still smell that smell long after. I hurried up to took my piss then rushed to see I could Justin...but he went to an upstairs part of the house that was "invite only" and they had two big guys at the bottom of the stairs to make sure nobody uninvited could enter. Anyway I stuck around for an hour or so hoping to see him again...but I never did. Idk for sure that it was Wong that did the deed in the bathroom...but if he did I think he might have some kind of intestinal issues or something.
