When Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid in 2009, Real had finished 2nd in La Liga (9 points behind Barca) the season prior which included a 6-2 humiliation by Barca at the Bernabeu and were humiliated by Liverpool in the UCL round of 16, they were knocked out in the round of 16 for 5 straight seasons in a row at that time. Man United were more popular than Real Madrid then and had won 3 PL titles in a row and reached 2 UCL finals in a row and won the UCL in 2008. Despite Man United being more successful and the emergence of a very strong Barca side, Ronaldo was ready to take the challenge and joined Real Madrid and the rest is history.

Where would you have gone if you're him? Only City or Liverpool offer an objectively better chance of winning major trophies and neither team showed concrete interest (Liverpool can't afford him and City don't really need him or couldn't afford him and Haaland under FFP). That PSG team are, on paper, capable of winning the UCL and yes the money on offer clearly played a part but is likely not the only factor.

At the end of it all, he is not a Real Madrid fan... he used his childhood dream as a tool to get more money & a new contract that gives him the power to play with PSG, the toy of the Qatar owners. Real Madrid fans are mad cause they felt connect & could relate to him, as they had similar memories or dreams. He basically trampled on all of that. Don't waffle it's not about money when he could have handled this way earlier or way different if it was anything about that... he waited optimal offers from both clubs & leaked all offers to media to get both clubs to raise their offers.

Actually Media has done big mistake. They have unnecessarily given too much coverage to Mbappe- PSG - Real Madrid There are other clubs and players around to cover. Concentration only on, any one aspect in football is detrimental to love for football for fans world wide. No player or no club is greater than Football itself. And coming to Real Madrid, their fans need not worry , everything happens for good only. Mbappe's fees might have destabilized the dressing room . To be clear I genuinely rank Mbappe as one of the best in the world. But he's like Henry, he relies on his speed to get past defenders and score more than trickery or dribbling ability, and as such his Post 30yo career will probably show a significant drop off. If he wants to be remembered as one of the greatest of all time, not just of his era, then another 3 years in PSG can only be seen as a waste of his quickly disappearing prime. He's choosing money over greatness. I mean he's watched on as his compatriot Old Man Benzema has become the odds on favourite for the Ballon d'Or this year, and inwardly he KNOWS he'd outscore Benzema if he was at Madrid, and yet somehow that STILL isn't enough to convince him to make the move. You are right, is hard to see where could he go next, and truly this stains his morals and now we know one cannot trust him. I'm just worried now about Zidane being in this mess. If we’re to save for another big signing in the coming years I’d rather we go for Haaland once he’s done with City or once his rumoured release clause activates.

In fairness, La Liga is not what it was a few years ago. If Mbappe wanted to move purely for footballing reasons he should have gone to City or Liverpool in the best league in the world. Heck even a switch to Chelsea where he could try and unseat those 2 sides.

If he as a Frenchman left without bringing champions league glory to France (especially with Messi & Neymar) he'd be cast as a disappointment to his country. He'd be criticized by some for taking the easy way out to join a giant club that's already in a CL Final WITHOUT him. Just like Kevin Durant joining the Warriors.. It's also interesting that many people acknowledge that players should do what's best for them and their families personal ambitions but whenever they do, pundits and fans begrudge the player for not doing what the fans and media want them to do. Alan Sheaere BOTTLED IT...could not handle the pressure of playing for a BIG club being scrutinised week in and week out. He had a Free ticket at Blackburn and Newcastle where everything past the half way line went through him.

Maybe Mbappe decided to stay to try to win the Champions' League before finally saying good bye. With the power that he gets from the extension, Mbappe may think he'll be able to achieve the dream. Winning the Champions' League with PSG will have a different meaning for Mbappe than winning for Real Madrid. We shall see whether doing this burns the bridges with Florentino Perez and a future with Real Madrid. Even if he becomes a free agent in three years' time, will Real want to deal with a player who wants to have this much power within the club?

It's the power to decide who is coming and going along with who is going to manage the team and where the team is going that made him stay hence the extension is only for a short period of time. Oncw he gets to do it (win the Champions' League with PSG), Mbappe will feel that he has done what he sets out to do and decides to leave. The few extra millions that Mabppe will get isn't going to amount that much if it is compared to Real's offer

Craig mentions how the french greats from the past moved to Italy or Spain saying they wanted to challenge themselves, but wasn't it the case at the time that those leagues also payed the higher wages and that was a big reason to move to them? If PSG with it's current owners was around back then I think it likely that many of those previous french greats would have stayed there as well if they were compensated more than in the italian or spanish league.

It's rather a simple explanation this, he is only 23 mbappe and the world at his feet. It's only a 3 year contract and at the end of the contract he will be 26, still approaching his prime. And his wages will only increase. It's good business
