My mom (not jamaican) made hers this way. Sometimes she would add a hard boiled egg. She left onions out because i didnt like them. She would add other things at times as well.

I always add my vegetables in with my pasta once the pasta is close to cooking. I’m lazy and want to wash less pots lol

It's to your taste and preferences. Maybe you can also look into Veganaise (Vegan Mayonnaise) compare the ingredients to actual mayonnaise to be safe.
