My teenage daughter started cleaning out her entire closet/dresser tonight-the night before school starts!! I walked in to everything on her bed. She was really overwhelmed. I handed her my phone and told her to spend 13 minutes watching today’s video and then she would be able to move through all the stuff. Now 3 garbage bags later (2 will actually be donated) and all is well on this clear freeway to senior year❤️

Dawn, I'm gonna try and keep this high level and to the point. I didn't know how much drama and trauma was wrapped up with my stuff. It's taking me so long to get through my house, not because of the amount of stuff, but the fact the stuff has weight on me. I got ill the first 2 times I went to the donation center because of the mental aspect of literally letting go YEARS worth of old thinking. THAT has been both the biggest and hardest part of this. But, also most rewarding. I don't even remember what stuff I got rid of that I don't claim as mine anymore, but I do know the stuff that can't claim me anymore. As Robert Frost said: two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one less traveled and that has made all the difference. Thank you for continuing to show up. I needed you in my life!

Very good to hear this. I have just begun this journey and last fall took 4 car loads to donation. Don’t miss the stuff. I’m currently emotionally attached to most of what I didn’t purge. I’m determined to get to the point of negative space and freedom from stuff before November.

I often get ill too! Especially when letting go of my baby things and belongings of my late grandparents. I get stomach cramps and headaches and once even a panic attack. But I know I need to let go of these things. I have been working on my possessions and my mental clutter since about 2015 I think and my house is almost where I want it to be. We have moved across country and I’ve let go of even more. Every time I get stressed about the things I’m letting go and in a week or so I can’t remember what it was!!! I am so much happier in my home now. And like dawn said, I feel like a better mum. I am more able to cope with my chronic illness. I would never go back. Thanks for sharing a little your story ❤️

The cool thing about minimizing your home is that once all the stuff is gone you really view things differently. I’m much more aware of my purchases. I am sooo much less likely to buy unwanted items because I don’t want to deal with them, and then just eventually declutter them out of the house. I’m much more environmentally friendly now that I am minimal. To me the “just get it out of my house” phase led to a much more aware person. Was it the perfect way to get rid of all the stuff, no. I took many MANY trips to the donation centers but at one point got a dumpster. The impact on the environment has already happened once you purchase the item paraphrasing The Minimalist. My whole goal was to get to a point that I just used so much less. And I’m there thanks to your help. ❤️

Please, guys, don't throw the stuff away! Post for free on Nextdoor or market place. I get the not having enough time to deal w the stuff and I offload so much stuff this way to save myself time/energy, but I've also received so much stuff this way and couldn't be more grateful. My baby clothes came almost entirely from a lady who free posted just a picture of 3 black trash bags with "these baby clothes have been in my attic for 3+ years and I have no idea what shape they're in or even what all is in here but I don't have time to deal w them and wanted to see if someone wanted to take on the task before I tossed them". I picked them up knowing they may be entirely trashed, but I'm handy and in the season of life where I needed baby clothes and had more time than money. They all came clean w a few washes and only a few even needed to be darned. It was wonderful for me, easy for her, and less going into the landfill.

Love the analogy. I’m a prodigal minimalist. I went minimal after our first baby. Time and years go by, and now after child #2 and current health problems, I’m returning to minimalism again! I’ve already taken 2 trunk loads to Salvation Army and working on my next load. Every day I’m trying to tackle one project, even if it’s something small like a shelf or drawer. Today it was a child’s closet. The stuff just piles up unless we actively take a role in managing it! Thank you!!

To answer your question, at this stage of life (after decluttering and practicing minimalism for many years) I feel like I'm in cruise control down the freeway. I don't struggle with getting rid of things that are no longer useful, and I really don't buy a whole lot of things with the idea that they "might" be useful, because I'm pretty secure about what works in my home. This was the video I needed today! We recently moved and despite getting rid of a substantial amount of stuff prior to moving, our new space feels full. While visiting my mom over the weekend I felt so much better in her house than my own which got me thinking. I realized it was because it wasn't full of stuff and the things that I had to manage was very small, just the things we brought with us for a few days. Then this video and analogy brought my next "ah ha" moment. Everywhere I turn in my house, I'm confronted by a road block. Stuff doesn't have a home so its piling up and it has become so overwhelming. I have been telling myself to be ruthless, to just get it out of here but was feeling guilty about not "properly" disposing it. You gave me the permission and guidance I needed 🤍🤍🤍

I’m a big believer that we should take better care of the planet: recycle, reuse, repurpose, or donate. However! How can you be expected to do for others if you can’t do for yourself? We have to take better care of our mental health in order to do better for others and the planet. Sometimes you just have to throw it away. Sometimes you have to feel that pain so you make better informed choices in the future. Throw it out now so that you can breathe and then next time maybe you will have the mental space to donate. And then next time maybe you’ll have the mental clarity to not even bring it into your home to begin with. ❤️ Thank you Dawn for giving people permission. My judgey hippie perfectionist save-the-planet self says sometimes you just have to throw stuff away. ✌️

My grandson was visiting, and said "Grandma, you have the cleanest bathroom of anyone I know!" Double-rewarding!

I was bringing my oldest daughter home today and we noticed that some land is being cleared and new construction will begin. My daughter read a sign that said a new storage facility is being built! There's one approx 3 miles up the road from this new one! (An old grocery store was converted into a storage facility!) I can name *many* others in our area! How can so many folks own so much stuff that they are willing to pay $$$ every month to store said stuff????? I'm so grateful that I began decluttering in 2014 and became a minimalist!

I agree! Wouldn't it have been nicer if they arranged that plot as a public park, with trees, grass, bushes, pathways, maybe a pond. It would have been much nicer for people to take a walk in a nature filled park, than paying for storing things they don't use in their everyday life.

Thank you for "giving me permission" to just toss stuff. As much as I would love to always post on my buy nothing group, re-home items, etc., I can't. I live in a 3 bedroom town home with two kids under 3 and a husband working from home since 2020. I just had to transition my master closet into a nursery nook for my daughter. I do already have anxiety that I manage and when our home "highway" starts to back up it DRAMATICALLY impacts me mentally. Being present and healthy emotionally for myself, my kids and husband is my top priority. We have been pursuing minimalism for about 4 years now, but the inventory has crept back up. Going to go buy some black garbage bags haha... To anyone who does feel guilty, acknowledge it, give yourself grace and just try to make a better choice next time. It is a process and so worth it. THANK YOU DAWN!!

I had a free yard sale. Advertised it on Facebook town page. It was all gone by 2 that afternoon. Towards the end I had someone messaging me to pick up all left overs for her her resale shop so I told her she could have what ever was left at 2 and so she came at that time and cleared the rest. It was so easy. I did donate alot and toss alot also. But like you said I needed it gone.

Hey Dawn!! I’m currently driving the steady speed limit at decluttering my home. I’ve made huge progress but there’s still more to do! Our planet has lanes too. Please declutter with the environment in mind, because if we want our home clean we should want our planet clean also. It’s everyone’s home. Some stuff is best sent to the trash because it really has nowhere else good to go, and the thrift store doesn’t want or need our garbage. But if it can be sorted/donated/sold/recycled in a conscientious manner, it takes just a little more time to do it right. 🧼 🌎

BRAND NEW y'all, I went from an impenetrable unfinished basement to well labeled bins in a corner and now TONS of empty space! It is glorious. I now can easily fit a yoga mat AND a super long recumbent bike (made to be stationary) in that space. It is startling how good it feels. And I'm in recovery from serious wrist tendon surgery and have chronic health problems, so if I can do this, anyone can! Slow and steady, stubborn and strong. You got this!

“Under construction” is the perfect way to describe my house highway. There are stretches where the pavement is new, deep black with crisp lines. And then you round the corner and BOOM! Steamroller in the middle of the road 😂 There are spots where traffic is moving through, but you can see the excavators parked by the road, ready to start working any day now. My favorite part of the house highway? The loading trucks, ready to take the rubble away. My donate pile is overflowing, and I can’t wait to see it leave!

Hi Dawn, I never comment on your videos and have been following you for a year now. You present the information with so much empathy and encouragement. I feel like we are on a journey together - you never talk down or say you have all the answers. Your content has helped me in so many ways - especially overcoming the guilt of parting with stuff that has cost money or used to belong to a grandmother etc. You helped me find my "uniform" so I don't waste money on clothes for my fantasy self. I always feel comfortable and think I look OK. De-cluttering is a continuous journey but I feel my house is under control and I save money by thinking twice before making a purchase. Thank you so much. You have helped me - and countless others - in more ways than you know. You and your wonderful family deserve the best in life Dawn! I look forward to your videos every week. Love from Australia xxxxx

My husband and I homeschooled our 8 children (lots of stuff in attic boxes from that!) and my parents moved in with us 5 years ago. A year after they moved in with us my husband’s parents moved into a nursing home. So we were inundated with both our parent’s households. 😳 Tossed more than I care to think about, but still a bit overwhelmed as what hasn’t been tossed or donated is still in my house. My mom collected teacups and my dad collected rocks. Not just any rocks but gorgeous potentially museum worthy crystal and fossil specimens. So to maintain my fairly sentimental heart, I’m passing the teacups on to my mom’s granddaughters and great granddaughters (who actually each want one or two because we have tea parties with my mom every time they visit), put all but the very best of the crystals outside in a “rock” garden, and the really good ones are being given to family members. I only keep the very few pristine linens, and donate/toss anything with a stain or hole. I donated their old suits to the local college theater program. It takes time to sort through and make sure my kids, my brother and the cousins get what they want. And yet I hear you with the “your mental health is more important than saving the landfill.” When we first had to clear out my in-laws house, we took over 30 pickup truckloads to the dump. Beyond emotional… BUT I SO appreciate this post….you’ve reinvigorated my purging. I don’t want to regret where things get taken, but more importantly I need a home that doesn’t drain me. 💗💗💗

I was too embarrassed to have people over, and I felt so stuck. I'm lucky enough to have my own "minimal mom"-my mother came to visit with some trash bags for me. She called it "crisis cleaning". She said when you were crisis cleaning, you could throw anything away and use as many paper towels as you needed. She's also the one who introduced me to your videos :) You've helped so many people get unstuck. Thank you thank you 💕

so glad you said this, I have 5 boys 7 and under and if I went ahead and donated or sorted through every single thing. I wouldn't be where I am today, I may not have even started, because it would have been too overwhelming and it would have taken me too long. Doing the black bag method, not overly concerning myself with sorting through every single thing has tremendously helped me keep my house manageable.

There's posts giving away everything from furniture, bags full of clothes, baby toys, puzzles with one missing piece, or even an open box of granola bars that their kids didn't like. 😂 I can totally understand that sometimes a person doesn't have the bandwidth to deal with the hassle of giving stuff away (sometimes I don't!), but it's great to see things go to use whenever possible.

With that said, I’m needing to get off the highway and take a pit stop lol thinking about a 30 day break but plan to get right back on it. Your idea of getting rid of stuff, trash, giving things away for for free is really key.
