I don't think I've ever seen a show capture a pure friendship as well as they did. Their bond was something special I've never seen replicated. Really loved when he was choosing to stay and Ragnar says "if you change your mind, your friends will be leaving at first light" as a way to signal that although he's annoyed by his decision, he still loves him and wants the best for him and just hopes he comes with him for his safety.

Athelstan revealed the side of Ragnar that Ragnar refused to show anyone else, not even his sons. Ragnar was forced to be cold and indifferent with all others, but not with his best friend.

The look they share when Ragnar says “wherever you go.. I will follow.” Was SO intense. Truly a soulmate situation.

If a man admits to loving another man unromantically, you know that their friendship is one of great importance and impossible deniability. A bond that is built by respect, struggle, and trust. They do an amazing job of showing the past between them that we never get to see. 10/10 here. I love it

Yeah the later seasons were all about the “glory of battle”. The earlier seasons had battles, but they were second to the human experiences like friendship, brotherhood, love, family, and farming.

I hope someday our gods will become friends. Is one of my favorite lines.

@@Godfrey_first_tarnished there is a friend that is closer to you than a brother.......Brotherly love is meant to be the goal.... but some brothers are not worthy of that title..... so love is what rally makes brothers..... not necessarily bloodlines...... even though Rollo and Ragnar grew up together their relationship never really got as close as what Ragnar had with Floki..... much less the bond he shared with Athelstan

Ragnar had such an open mind and thus he was so very successful ❤

I fell out of love with this show after their deaths. Ragnar’s character and their relationship was the most interesting thing about this series. It made more than just a spectacle of action and intrigue.

One of the best and purest friendships ever in human history.

That’s all a Bonus,but what really stood out about Athlestan for Ragnar that he was a lot like him,he wasn’t afraid to question his religion,beliefs and Traditions,that is something neither floki,lagertha or rollo could do Only Ubbe by the end of the series was like that

back when Europe was still huge forest area...must have been so beautiful once when still mostly wild..as is the rain forest today ..

There is no love that compares to a love between brothers. Blood or not. The bond is like no other.

One of the most heartbreaking deaths in all of TV.

I watched this show from the start and loved it. I never once thought their relationship was romantic it was deeper than that and I think most people saw that too. Much credit to the actors, they were wonderful and made Ragnar and Athelstan come to life in a real way.

I wish they kept Athelstan alive a little bit longer. I really do feel like he died too early in season three. I wanted to see more of Ragnar and Athelstan there wasn’t enough adventures of them together.

This will probably come out as arrogant and prideful, but I believe I have been an Athelstan to many of my friends. Before I met them, they'd say that they were brutes, silent, rough, depressed. Through my kindness and gentleness, they transformed into better, soft heearted men.

Vikings should have won multiple awards including the actors. Such a shame. Ragnar and Aethelstan's relationship was great to watch. It not only showed how much of a pioneer and trailblazer that Ragnar was as a person but also how open minded he was to concepts and thoughts that were not his own nor part of his culture. Its that thinking that allowed him and his sons to have so much fame and success. That mindset allowed him to develop a brotherhood bond with Aethelstan. The conversations and time spent really highlight how much goes into developing friendships and bonds that stand the test of hardships and challenges. Ragnar challenged Aethelstan and his way of life and thinking and Aethelstan did the same. In the end it expanded their capacity to think for themselves and own their own choices and decisions in relation to their journeys and those around them.

Im so glad they didnt turn this into anything spicy. Ragnar "I believe" saw a innocence in that man, innocence he probably once had and lost, and hasnt seen it since for a long time. Also saw a brother. A peace. A trust. An admiration. But nothing... Spicy lol

I watched this show until Ragnor died. After that I couldn’t watch it anymore. He was the show and without him it was not the same

So after all that, he died?! I stopped watching after the 2nd or 3rd seasons but it seems like he is the only one Ragnar loved hopelessly & unconditionally. That is the thought that came to me at the 7th minute

HIs dying wish was to literally get baptized and spend eternity with Athelstan knowing full well it meant not seeing all his actual friends and family. Athelstan was everything to him.
