You would think experienced travellers would be the ones who rock up in the nick of time. But it's the exact opposite, they always arrive early. You only need to miss your flight a couple of times because of...events...to teach you to set off early.

I don't know why Japan is so stress-free for me given the high population density and rush rush vibe of the cities. I think it's because everything just *works*

  • @tfft

My response is always that the population density wouldn't be that high if it wasn't for the efficience of the transportation to begin with. A two way street, so to speak.

as I've said before, fun to see the evolution from your first videos three or so years ago(?) to now......friendly chatty narration, easy humor and snark here and there, quiet pauses to watch the scenery, no gushing over less-than-important points........I watch the other famous youtube travel guys, but I know this one will be worry-free, not frantic, fun, unpretentious, the best

I flew on an ANA turboprop from Oita to Osaka Itami a few years back and it was one of the best flights ever, as I was able to do a lot of sightseeing of beautiful small islands and shores from above. The only downside was Oita not having a lounge for Star Alliance Gold customers. At Itami, I walked to the Hankyu train station, which really isn't done that often there but hey, I like walking. And yes, I love Japan too.

JAL recommends you get to airport security (keeping in mind that there is no check-in process) "at least 20 minutes before departure" (!) I think part of the reason for this is to make the Osaka-Tokyo route more competitive time-wise with the shinkansen ("bullet train").

I like ITM and it never feels like a domestic airport. I usually take a bus up to Kyoto (55 minutes) from ITM and then head by Shinkansen to Tokyo after a brief stopover (in Kyoto). Thanks for your wonderful reports on Japan. Incidentally, if you want to get a good view of Fuji San always sit on the left side going both ways.

6:04 to get an international flight to here you would need to go book a route via HND that meant this from the US AA/AS🇺🇲 to JL🇯🇵 Oneworld Alliance while Star Alliance gives HND/NRT on UA🇺🇲 to NH🇯🇵. For most International Travelers they go directly to KIX🇯🇵. Like the trip report I wonder if this is a better choice to reach Kyoto or go to KIX. What my mother ended up doing when she went here last year was this PR127 to PR408 because in her mind it's actually much cheaper to book Manila to Osaka with the extra flight being New York to Manila rather than JL/NH to ITM/KIX from EWR/JFK 6:16 JL A350-900 most people remember it's Sistership JA13XJ because it got involved in an accident in HND

What kind of passengers fly between Tokyo and Osaka? I would imagine most would pick the Tokaido Shinkansen. If you factor in driving time to the airport, check-in and custom time, waiting for boarding etc, then its quite possible taking the Shinkansen would be the same time-wise as flying or the trip duration may even be shorter than taking the plane, depending where in Tokyo or Osaka you plan to go. Especially if someone lives in say, Yokohama and has to go all the way to Narita to fly to Osaka (I mean, Haneda isn't always possible for everyone for a variety of reasons).

  • @tfft

Flying domestic in Japan is amazing. Earlier this year I had some miles to burn through so I decided to fly from Nagoya to Sendai in the morning, have lunch and flew back in the afternoon. 12,000 miles at the time + ¥1280 for the round trip. Qantas does the same thing with their FF cards, and no ID checks for Oz domestic flights.

Great review! Just curious, why do you point your camera at the ground when boarding rather than showing the flight attendants?

  • @tfft

You answered the question for me lol. Specifically to not have the crews first impression of me pointing a camera in their face. I avoid crew in my videos as much as reasonably possible.

@@tfft That's interesting. I filmed my entry & departure on a Singapore Airlines aircraft to document my first flight to Asia and the attendants were all smiles! And the service while onboard was outstanding as well. Thanks for your reply and I look forward to your future videos.

Yes- I used to do the same- positioned low but forward facing… But I specifically don’t want the added attention that someone filming would normally get. If they treat me like any ol’ passenger, I’m happy.

Japanese airports give to the minute approach times. Likely the gate in Osaka was needed and the slot in Tokyo wasn’t available right away.

Yokota airspace, that extends from Niigata Prefecture to western Tokyo, the Izu Peninsula, and Nagano Prefecture, altitudes from 12,000 feet to a maximum of 23,000 feet is controlled by US military and no civilian aircraft can fly.

Who'd fly from Osaka to Tokyo? Train is faster but more expensive. I would try the first class next time 😁

  • @tfft

    @tfft

The train is not faster… Train: arrive 15 mins before + 2.5 hours train. Plane: arrive 40 mins before + 1 hour flight.

You’re on the wrong side of the plane. You should be sitting on the left to see Mt Fuji on a morning flight.

@@tfft Yes I did saw Fuji san. lol. I made that hasty comment right before the Mt Fuji scene on your video. We took that same flight as yours last 2018, seated on the window left side and the flight path was a bit too close to Mt Fuji.
