I Tested Japan's BEST Airlines

Ойын-сауық

Today I Tested Japan's Best Rated Airlines in order to find out how good or bad they actually were and what the differences were like! Japan Airlines (JAL) and ANA are considered to be the BEST rated and most popular airlines in all of Japan but how different can they really be? I show you everything from the check in, to the in flight experience and all the interactions with staff so we can truly see how each airline compares to one another!

Having flown both JAL and ANA from LAX to Tokyo, hands down JAL is better. More space in economy, better & larger selection for movies/TV shows, food was better (they gave us bloody yoshinoya on my flight, so good), and service was better. Also ANA is the only airline I've taken where I was lucky enough to get the whole row to myself, when this has happened in the past I lay down across the seats and take a nap with no issues, on my ANA flight I was woken up and told I couldn't do that, which knocked down ANA some points for me.

ANA:T2. I would say the gates monopoly by them. And they even have staff holding a plate, asking one by one which flight you fly. Also their boarding arrangement is better.

If you want to fly to many places, ANA is better, because they have a little bit larger network than that of JAL, and it is a member of Star Alliance. If you want to experience better flight experience including OMOTENASHI, JAL is better than ANA. As a Japanese, I am happy to hear that you enjoyed both flights in Japan! I'm a Southern Californian about a third of the way through a 3 and 1/2 year residence in Japan. I should mention that there are differences between domestic and international service with respect to JAL and ANA. Aside from meal service, the lounges serving most Japanese Airports are very different when comparing one in the domestic area versus international terminals/zones. ANA and JAL international lounges usually have enhanced food and beverage offerings, and showers (there are a few exceptions when it comes to showers). When flying from Haneda Tokyo Airport to/from Sapporo Chitose or Osaka Itami, both JAL and ANA normally use wide-body aircraft frequently because of the volume of business. And the airport kiosks for JAL and ANA usually have a foreign language option (especially English), just like many ticket kiosks for trains/subways, bank ATM's, etc., in major cities. Also, a final hint - if your middle name is on the airline reservation, you normally need to enter the first and last name contiguously (without a space) on the airline website or airport kiosk (and there will not be a line for a middle name entry). The Japanese do use middle names, so using a "separate" middle name online or at a check-in kiosk is confusing. By the way, I definitely prefer to use Japanese carriers when returning home to the US, or flying anywhere else to/from Japan. Their efficient and quick boarding process has always amazed me.

I’ve flown on both. JAL offers more traditional Japanese style service while ANA is like the more modern style airline

Not sure if they still have it, but the last time I flew ANA, they had cameras outside the plane. So you could see everything outside as the plane took off on your infotainment screen.

ANA 787s are configured for domestic flights. Japan Airlines and ANA have a set of widebody planes just for domestic fleets

When I flight from Tokyo to Hochiminh city (Vietnam) ANA accidentally overbooked my seat so their solution is upgrade my seat to business with no extra fee. It not a thing that happens everyday but it showed that they always give the best solution when something went wrong. When I experienced similar issue in other plane some time they ask me for small fee to upgrade the seat not much but also not very happy 🙄 Also one thing that I don’t think ANA do well is drinks service. I’m only 17 but the one who ask me which drink I want she didn’t ask about my age to check will I able to drink wine. I had to tell her my age and i cannot drink alcohol but then when she back to ask do I want another drink she still asking if I want wine 😬 Other than that Ana’s food really good on both economic and business.

Thanks for sharing. FYI both JAL and ANA use high density wide bodied aircraft such as the 787 and 777 for their domestic routes. It’s therefore normal to see the 777-200 and 777-300 on the Tokyo to Osaka run. The ANA aircraft you were on is not an international configuration. When the 747s were still in service, you could fly super high density ANA or JAL 747s on a 1 hour flight between Osaka and Tokyo, for example.

Inflight entertainment systems aren’t in 1 hour and below flights? One time i missed my flight to my home state because of a massive 2 hour delay because of flooding. We made it to DC which was our connection and missed our flight home: the next day we had a connection from DCA to LGA and it was a 40 min flight and we had inflight entertainment systems.

9:54 sometimes happens in Singapore too as our name formats aren't standardized. So while Malays & some Indians have their given name placed before their patronym, as for the Chinese, while your surname always goes before your Chinese given name (typically 2 words, while some online forms insist your given name can only have 1 word), you can legally add an English name to that too & choose whether to do so to the front or back. So when you buy an air ticket online & the form there asks you to input your given & last/surname separately, their system might or might not later auto-concaternate your inputted surname to the back of your given name (which is the correct way for some ethnicities, but not for Chinese), which may be in a different order from how your name is legally registered, increasing the risk of a mismatch when you check in for your flight, & your self-service check-in machine saying that there's an error. There're also some Chinese with English names that omit entering in their Chinese names, for brevity,* when buying air tickets online, which can also cause an error when using check-in machines, as the online system will then have a mismatch with your legally registered name that shows up in your passport *Another reason is that their English name is put in front of their surname that's then followed by their Chinese name. So their surname isn't at the front or back of their full name, but in the middle. So if you ask such people to fill in their full given name followed by their surname, unless the online system is smart enough to know not to append the surname to the front or back of the given name, but to insert it in the middle of the full given name (in-between the English & Chinese ones), the person's name in the system is definitely going to appear differently from what's legally registered & cause an error at the self-service check in machine too
