The Best Mountain Bike and Dirt Bike Goggle Shootout - We test six popular goggles

Спорт

Six riders, six months and six different goggles. We spent all winter passing around lots of goggles from these brands with different color lenses and options to see who would reign supreme in our Vision Quest.

    Finally a good and helpful review! Tallied opinions from multiple riders, testing over a longer period of time. Pros and most importantly cons, not just the marketing bs found in many other "reviews". Helped me make my purchase decision big time, gonna be picking up the Leatt's. You have earned a new subscriber, keep up the great work!

    4 year old video still helping us out. Thank you for this review. I'm a fan of Oakley because of their first responder discount. I'm familiar with their flight decks for snowboarding. I've been using them for several seasons. Recently took up MTBing. Once you said they're the ones to beat, that's all I needed to hear. Just put my order in. $91. Hopefully I'll like the airbrakes as much as my flight decks.

    Sadly, there appears to be no reviews of the base model Leatt Velocity 4.5 goggle. Thanks to the Loam Wolf for reviewing the Velocity 5.5 model. I felt comfortable trying the next model down based on their review. I purchased these from Amzon Prime for $49 delivered. I needed the goggles for a trip to Spider Mountain in Burnet, TX where it can be dry, dusty and blown out. My Oakley Prizm sunglasses provide excellent coverage and contrast, but can't provide the protection and keep out the dust like a goggle. For $49 with the upgraded Iriz lens, I was very happy with the Velocity 4.5. If you don't care for the Iriz lens, they are only $39. I was very impressed with the optics and the wide field of view that is free of distortion. A key difference between the Velocity 4.5 and the 5.5 model is the absence of the outrigger system, the 5mm narrower strap which measures 40mm and only dual density foam and not three density foam. I had no issues with the goggles on my Troy Lee Designs Stages full face helmet. I did not experience any slipping and felt that despite the lack of an outrigger system, the goggle stayed secured against my face. While it was only 76-80*Fs (24-27*C), the anti-fog treatment worked well. When the day and my efforts heated up, a quick and temporary adjustment to my head angle moved more air to the top foam which cleared any moisture in the goggle. The frame is very sturdy and confidence inspiring. Full face mountain bike helmets like the TLD Stages, have an ample face opening that doesn't seem to require the benefits of an outrigger system. Your experience may vary. For $49 shipped, I'm very happy with the Velocity 4.5 and expect they will perform well for quite some time. Replacement lens are reasonably priced, varied in color and tint, and easy to swap on the Velocity 4.5s despite not having the easier lens switching of the Velocity 6.5. If you don't require an outrigger system and can live with 40mm of strap width, I think you'd be happy with Velocity 4.5. Also, the foam managed my perspiration fine, but it was not as hot as it can be here in TX. I will update the review if I experience any issues with the dual foam density. If you don't care for the Iriz lens and only need a clear or regular colored lens, the Velocity 4.5 goggles are only $39. That's a lot of eye protection for not a lot of money. In my opinion, the Velocity 4.5 goggles are easily way better eye protection than what $40 would buy you from any sunglass brand or model and still a lot more protection than premium full coverage style sunglases like Oakley Sutro, Jawbreaker, or Flight Jacket models. While I liked the Iriz contrast and felt it was more than adequate, it is not up to the level of contrast as the Oakley Prizm lenses. I'm happy with my purchase and was happy to find that I didn't give my goggles any thought while riding downhill trails. I think you want your protective gear to fall into the background of your thoughts so that you can focus on the task at hand, having fun and staying on the bike. Thanks again to The Loam Wolf. Hope you don't mind my adding these comments on the Velocity 4.5. I think it's a great value, especially if your need for goggles is less frequent.

    The Oakley Airbrakes are still the best goggles 4 years later. They were on sale for 1 day only on Amazon so when I saw they were "only" $95 I finally pulled the trigger. Black strap with clear lens, I ride mostly bike parks in wooded conditions, and I got a bronze pair too but haven't tested them yet. I tried everything and had actually settled on $25 Leatt Velocity 4.5 which for the price are great, but they stopped making my preferred lens. I also had 100% and Smith which I really liked, but the lens scratched really easily, and I'm pretty picky with keeping them clean. The Airbrakes just have such a better view, like WAY better view than anything else I've used. You don't know what you're missing until you try them, and once you do you'll never be able to go back.

    Great review guys! What are your thoughts on lens color for differing conditions such as woods/darker or a more open terrain/sunny?

  • @TheLoamWolf

    @TheLoamWolf

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Ben! Lens color for conditions is very important. To be totally honest we don't know if there's documented science out there, BUT, we'd imagine that every person probably has tints that work best for them and their vision. For example, I hated some of the older Prizm lenses in SoCal bright sunny conditions. Others loved it. In the spotty light, woods my absolute favorite is a light blue tint and I got turned onto that by pros I looked up to when racing Snow Summit DH back in the 90s. It's stuck with and I feel it does a great job of balancing brightness and still offering definition and shadows on undulating terrain. Dark smoke is probably best suited for open desert, and full sun. Some people like reddish tints and I found the new Prizms by Oakley to be pretty awesome all around. I think a lot of people use goggles and lenses particularly as fashion accessories and not performance gear. Mirrored lenses look bad ass, but you don't look cool in last place or spitting up dust because you couldn't see a hidden rock in the woods! Test different lenses out and see what works best. For me, it's light blue.
