Not sure about the 2 near £10k bikes for New/Beginner riders, unless you're related to the owner of the insurance company :) A few good ones missing MT03, Z400, G310, CB300R and many more. Also please stop using footage of people doing wheelies and power slides when you are talking new/beginner riders.

Everyone is assuming that new riders are young. We have included some more cost-effective options also, but in the UK many riders are taking their first motorcycle test much later in life.

My first big bike was a 900cc Triumph Bonneville T100 and I've absolutely loved the torque it generates without having mind-boggling power. Feels *just right* for commuting, touring and having a blast at the weekends. Upgrading soon to a Street Triple but I'll never forget my T100.

SV650 with a Yoshimura exhaust, such a sweet sound. Jack of all trades. Had a 2002 SV650, then later a CBR600RR and got back into riding after a break and went back to the SV. Does everything you need on the street in comfort and still fun for the occasional track day and sounds great to boot.

I got a SV650 in race trim. Plenty of fun to be had on one of these great twins. My race bike has standard engine 72bhp but more adequate fork springs and quality rear shock.

Some good options. Personally, I started on 1.5 of the bikes on the list. A 2015 Honda CG500F (the .5 since it was tangentially mentioned) which was stolen after only about 4 months (RIP). After that, I picked up a 2019 Ninja 650. I have to say, both bikes were fantastic. I've since traded up to a 2021 Ninja 1000sx, which I love, but I do occasionally wish I still had one of those starters. Mainly to turn into a track bike I don't mind slinging into the weeds. :D

In my opinion it's best to test ride a number of bikes you fancy and only go with the one your body feels comfortable riding intuitively and with confidence

My first byke a Suzuki Sv650s Sport '08 - I miss the bike so much - V-twin engine, very agile, loads of torque, great sound - perfect first bike 👍

I own ktm 390 adventure. It is more capable bike than me even though I clock 100,000km on my previous bike. I am astonished after understanding the 390 adventure performance when I rode the bike in forest trail. Absolutely amazing bike.

We have tested the 390 on UK roads and ;can agree, it's bloody good off road. And for the spec, TFT, fully adjustable suspension, riding modes, switchable TC, it's really good value. Get a quickshifter for £600 from the options list and you've got a mega little lightweight traveller!

@@visordown Here in India, we do not get adjustable suspension like global model, still it is bloody good motorcycle.

My favourite.... Suzuki SV650. It's body design and looks is " PERFECT NAKED BIKE ". 😍 I wished Suzuki to make this model in smaller cc too. Eg. 150cc, 180cc, 200cc, 250cc, 300cc and so on. I'm HAPPY to see the list ... it's on RANK# 1 😁👍🏻 😊

For smaller framed riders, I argue that the Kawasaki Z400 is an excellent "first big bike". It is right at the top of A2 performance and is quicker than many cruisers with more than double its displacement. For a historical perspective, it easily does the "ton" and has performance comparable to the famous British Twins of the 1960's and 1970's.

@@domi9577 I use an extra piece of foam on the seat for longer rides, but otherwise, it fits me well. I am much more comfortable with an upright, feet-below-hips position than feet-foreword position of a cruiser, for example.

Love how "first bike" is rammed down riders throats Do what you feel is right for you. I started on a GSXR 1000. NO ISSUES. just respect what yr riding

Best advice for new riders is to get test rides. It doesnt matter how good something sounds in its description and its exhaust notes, you will find the best bike for you is the one that feels right. It has to fit. If you feel really comfortable on it you will ride well. Try as much as you can before committing to an expensive purchase. Ive ridden some of the best bikes out there and most i get off and say "nope... not for me" The one i have fits me like a glove and it feels natural and easy.

Can be hard to test ride bikes if you live somewhere where dealers don't do test rides. (Especially not for rank beginners.) But you can at least sit on them. The ergos are important. Sadly some ergonomic problems don't present themselves till you've been riding bike a while. Was 95% sure I wanted a Ninja 400 till I rode one at a demo day. Sportbike ergos are fine for me but the N400 turned my wrists at a funny angle with lots of sweep in the clip-ons. It seemed ok at first but after 15 min in the saddle my wrists were aching and I can ride an R6 for hours with no wrist pain.

The forthcoming Honda 500 Scrambler will be a good one.

First big bike Kawasaki zxr400, loved it.

Yamaha r7 is a twin not a triple as mentioned

Rules were different back when I passed \\i went from the bike I passed on (CB25-2) to a CB750-4. Scared the hell out of me riding home. In a week I was grounding to main stand spur. Would still have it know if I hadn't been knocked off it. Loved that bike.

Honda CBR650R will be my first beginner bike, having done my DAS on the CBR650 it feels really familiar and easy to ride, but with the awesome sports bike looks!

@@lilnips IMHO that's the one place this bike isn't a great beginner bike. I guess if Dan is a big strong lad he could luck out and not drop it coming to a stop with some lean angle on or some such mishap; but the lighter the bike the less likely a 'beginner drop' happens. (Almost happened to me once and it might have gone all the way over if it wasn't a low and light 300.)

man motorbiking is really affordable... I don't know why I expected them to be so much more. Really puts into perspective how expensive music and audio recording can be lol. A couple mics and a mexican strat and boom.... you have a freaking bike.

The most comfortable of all for me these may surprise you. It’s the Kawa!

Agree with most of the list, but I think you guys missed: suzuki vstorm 650 Himalayan 400 Tracer 7. My first bike was a Vstrom 250, then I upsized to a Vstrom 650 and is the best around bike ever, you dont need anything more.

Perfect beginner bike is a used R3 or Ninja 300. The Ninja's 300cc motor in particular has proven to be a very reliable powerplant even on track. More perfect is if it's already had a low speed drop or two to take the price even further down and the pressure completely off. A bike you will likely sell for about as much as you paid when you move along from it. Only a chump or someone with more money than sense buys a brand new bike to start on.

ok but new motobikes aren't just newer. They also have changed a lot over the years, with fuel injection, and safety features like traction control/abs, diagnostic readings, LED, stability control,. They're also, in a lot of cases, much more reliable. Plus you can shop one that fits you perfectly, while the used bike market can be pretty skimpy at times. Plus you don't really see cheaper bikes offered used that often, usually its pricier, beefier bikes that come down to about the price of $5k plus anyway. Bikes ain't THAT expensive relatively speaking. I say get a modern bike that fits you perfect, and it's likely a much better experience for a new rider than a 10 year old bike. I mean, people with lots of money and sense, will probably buy a new bike too. If a bike sells for as much as you paid for it (which isn't true at all anyway), then by your logic you can buy a new bike, and sell it for the same amount if you don't like it.

@@JunkBondTrader My logic huh? The depreciation curve is real. You lose the most money in depreciation the second you take a new vehicle off the dealer lot. A 6-8 year old beginner bike might be losing a couple hundred dollars of value a year, tops. W/E buy what you want. Anyone can. But it won't change the FACT that you will lose a boat load less money buying, and especially dropping, a used bike.

As for the Aprilla, I just cannot see a 100hp machine being included as a "beginner" motorcycle.

Which one is the fastest on the list??

Being older you're older doesn't make you smarter or more skilled on a motorcycle. Miles, practice, taking courses, and learning from mistakes makes you a better rider. I you're getting your first motorcycle or getting back on after years/months of not riding, don't think that just because you're older that you are safe to get a more powerful bike. You'll improve your skills much faster and safer on a slower, lighter bike. Many of the best riders (pro racers, etc) still prefer low cc bikes as their dailys because they are more fun at slower speeds and are easier to practice with.

If you,re new to big bikes then why buy brand new? You might make an expensive mistake, after all, dealers don't like giving test rides much. I have just bought a Hyosung GV650. £2250. Incredible value. Great looks and image (basiclly why I chose it) but it's long wheel base and thumpy motor mean it is quite a handfull. My next choice will be much more considdered, but I haven't lost much money on the Hyosung. They now do a smaller bike that could have been included in this selection.

I bought the Tuono 660 as my first bigger bike. It's not something I would recommend to the more exuberant 21 year old me because I would have probably killed myself on it.....but as a 40 year old its fine. Great fun. I'll never need anything bigger from a sportsbike because it far exceeds my capability but it is small for a 6 foot 3 in bloke.

MT07 for the win!

Beginner can be pretty drastic From first street bike to first motorcycle ever and everything in between Low powered bike for a true beginner....you will drop it, will be better overall rider and for sure won't be your last or only bike And you may not like it

Not many Versys 650 votes then. Always mention Honda's 500 range but not Kawasaki's range of 650.

My first "real" bike was a Yamaha R6

I have wondered about the word "orientated" being used @4:58. Orientated is the past tense of oriented and since 390 adventure is still alive, shouldn't it be '... into a compact value oriented package.'

Really? Most are pitched as first 'big bikes' for newer riders. Admittedly, some do have much power and tech than others, but who is to say that will put off a new rider?

Its a crime for any dealer to sell a large bike to a new rider. Some do, some ask first question, how many years do you on the clock? It is the most dangerous thing anyone can do.....period. Also, test ride them as much as you can. Don't buy the first one you see because it looks or sounds cool.

600cc and 650cc bikes are not suitable for beginners. Full stop! A beginner on such a powerful bike, is increasing significantly, the chances of themselves ending up in a body-bag or at best "permanently paralysed" in a wheel chair. Loss of limbs, is also a significant possibility, for a beginner on such powerful bikes. I started on a 250cc and I mastered throttle, clutch and brake control. And it didn't punish me, if I made a mistake, unlike a more powerful bike. It gave me a solid foundational skill set, to move onto a more powerful bike.

I slightly disagree with you - if a person don't have the brains, then it can go bad and on even 125cc motorcycle. Conclusion - if you have brains, you can start at any cc bike (if your age aloud to do so of course) 😉

I note that in the US, where some beginners can start on an R1 for example, the insurance costs for a young beginner rider starting out on an R1, are going to be enormous. In fact some insurance companies might even refuse, to insure the beginner on such a powerful bike. And, there is a very good reason for that obviously. It's got nothing to do with maturity either. A beginner rider is going to be punished more harshly on a 1000cc motorcycle, for the inevitable mistakes they will make, than if they were on a 250cc motorcycle.

Throttle works both ways. Beginners need good fueling, progressive Throttle response and reassuring handling.

Who says that these theoretical new riders are young and irresponsible? In the UK there are lots of people over the age of thirty taking their motorcycle test for the first time. Are you saying the risk of them riding a Tuono 660 is the same as a 19-year-old passing their test and doing so?

@@visordown Well, it's also not just a question of maturity, but capability as well I would say. A beginner, no matter how old they are, is going to make mistakes. A 660cc bike is more likely to punish harshly a beginner rider when they make a mistake, as opposed to if they make a similar mistake on a 300cc bike. The bottom line is that a 660cc motorcycle, is too much power for a beginner rider, irrespective of their age or maturity level. They don't have the skill level to handle it safely.

I think we have enough reviews.nowadays motorcycle reviews are like A holes, everybody has one.oh well, I guess it's that or get an actual job and why would anyone want to do that when they can just beat a dead horse again and make another review for the 10,000th time on the same 10,000 bikes?

£8400 for a 700cc bike.. good value? Really? Clearly it's time I climbed back under my rock.

Honda Rebel - "inspired by HDs of the past", then designed by a person with severe sight problems. One of the ugliest bikes on the market, that tank at a 45 degree angle ???

Exactly!! I have nothing against the Hondas they made good bikes and reliability wise no complains. But the Rebel is seriously an ugly bike

Toi many of those bikes are grotesquely ugly, seems to be the in thing at the moment ti make them as ugly as possible imho of course.
