The Best Minnow Spawning Structure for Ponds

Спорт

My largemouth bass pond needs a ongoing food source, so I decided to create a minnow habitat for spawning so minnows can spawn more and eventually provide an ongoing food source for the largemouth bass so they can increase from mid-size to trophy size.

You may want to use plastic bread racks like they use in the delivery trucks. Put 2-3-4-+ together

Great videos and minnow spanw structure. I just had Jones fish out this fall and stocked minnows, catfish, and redear sunfish. You might want to consider installing a aerator. I installed a higblow pump with two diffuser. It will lower muck, promote fish growth, spawning and keep your algae load low. I am going to use your plans on the minnow structure you built but I think I will use plastic pallets and plastic garden fencing. I appreciate you sharing, tight lines!

Thanks. We was considering an aerator and decided to hold off but we will likely get it at some point soon. Thanks for the tip.

I like your set up. I just redid my pond and I put some pallets in weighed down with blocks too. I wish I would have seen your idea with the chicken wire first though. That will help keep the larger predators out but I plan to sink more structure in when I can get more pallets so I'll do it with the next ones. One issue with minnows in a pond with predators, even the smallest of bass, is that there is a good chance they will eventually devour the minnow stock if and when they venture out of the structure. One idea I am about to implement is to build some minnow breeding cages that will hold the breeding stock inside while allowing the smaller ones to leave. I will frame a few boxes with 2"x2"s and use PVC coated1/4" hardware mesh to hold them in. I will place a couple under my dock, likely with floats attached, that I can easily slide in and out so I can sprinkle feed in a hinged top and do any maintenance needed like cleaning algae or adding fresh large minnows. I will put together a small but removable web structure inside for them to breed on. If this works, I will build two or three more to put along the banks. I am also going to build a small one that I can keep in a large baby pool up near the house to see how well it's working since there will be no way to check how well the ones in the pond will be breeding as the fry will be leaving the cage. At least in a small pool I will be able to see the small ones outside the cage.

Wow....I really like the idea of having the PVC below the dock, the ability to remove and clean the algae. I think some algae has grown on the pallet that I put in the pond but I still think it makes a good hiding structure. I'm not positive if the minnows are breeding there now but I am glad to say I still see minnows swimming around the pond in groups. Good luck with your pond projects!

Try bread racks. They can be stacked however many X you want and should last a lifetime. Goodluck

Good video! I just added 15 pounds of fathead minnows in my pond. I have cinder blocks and pallets. I have a shallow area in my pond that the bass and bluegills don't go into and that's where I released them. Hopefully this population will be self sustaining.

I've got a clay bottom. Would adding sand to the bottom be beneficial? Thanks. I will be building one of those pallet spawning things. Thanks for the tips.

I don't think a sand bottom will change much with minnows spawning. They need the correct structure to spawn, along with the water temperature.

Except the silt is going to fill the bottom half.

I am wondering if that has happened. I can see the top of the structure when the water is the clear.
