    As an FYI - The Omega drivers for the ATI graphics on this machine offer quite a performance boost compared to stock ATI drivers. They also include a graphics overclocking tool which, I've bumped the clock speeds all the way from like 140 to 180 without any stability issues - after that the CPU becomes the bottleneck.

    Is this the best option if im looking to do some retro gaming of PC games from early and late 90s getting older now and wanting to play certain games from when I was a kid. For example redneck rampage, Santa's gone postal, mad robots 3000, original road rash. Also would be cool to hook up to my flat screen if possible. Any info is appreciated

    This T5710 is a really great starting machine for Retro. Its the PC i got to see how much i'd like the retro PC hobby before going all out and building my dream PC. I do install a newer DirectX on mine mostly because i just have it laying around and never had issues with it but also because i want good support for Xbox 360 controllers. My driverpack that you showcase in the video has a Xbox 360 controller driver included in the USB installer so with a new enough DirectX it should be plug and play. I also have newer versions of some of the drivers available including my own chipset driver mod that allows the newer chipset driver to work on this T5710 as well as an automatic installer for the soundblaster in DOS. I can mail these to you if you are interested.

    That's cool. I haven't quite gone that retro yet. I'm still working on a Dell Wyse R90lw gaming machine with windows XP. Probably the oldest games I've put on there are Motoracer 1 and Wing commander 3. I have spare thin clients, but the ones I have are probably a good 8 years newer than that HP. I suspect if I want to do a Win 98 machine I'd need some older hardware in order to be able to set it up properly with all drivers.

    I had (still do) the 7500m (64MBs) GPU on my laptop I bought back in 2002. Great card for the time, but it quickly became obsolete in about 3-4 years. In early 2004 there were already games which either wouldn't run or run very poorly on it. I imagine the 7000m was worse. Of course I am talking about new Windows XP games and not 98 or DOS. Hey James. On your website and this video you mentioned that PS2 splitters work to plug in a keyboard and mouse to the combo PS2 port. Have you actually attempted this yourself with the monoprice splitter you linked? If so did you setup the bios option for the port as keyboard or mouse? The only reason I ask is because my PS2 splitter (not a monoprice splitter) doesn't work in dos or windows (or to f10 to get into the bios menu actually) I'm running a 800mhz t5710 with firmware 1.08a. James Mackenzie I believe the highest spec PCI GPU is something like a Radeon 4000 series or something ridiculous. I think I’m incorrect with the specific series, but if I find it, I’ll post here. Someone had posted it on the Eurogamer forums several years ago, but that’s all gone now.

    James Mackenzie … just googled, and they apparently still make PCI GPUs, but the issue will be when driver support for the old OSs cut off for Win98 & WinXP. All of these appear to have PCI versions ***as long as the article I read, wasn't mistaking PCI-E for PCI***, but I doubt any have old OS driver support: PCI Slot Graphics Cards Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT PNY NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 ASUS TUF Gaming RX 5700XT Sapphire Radeon RX 580 MSI Gaming GeForce GT 710 ZOTAC GeForce GT 710 TBH, these all look too new to be standard PCI, so be sure to do some research.

    You may have covered this - I need to rewatch the whole thing, but how is joystick support in DOS games on this system? I still have a few Gameport Joysticks that I don’t expect I’ll be able to use on this, but can USB sticks/pads be made to work both in Win98SE and DOS? I don’t think I’ve ever tried that natively. Otherwise is it possible to add a gameport for old sticks, I wonder?

  • @jamesfmackenzie

    @jamesfmackenzie

    In Win98, you can connect a USB gamepad. For DOS unfortunately you’ll need a game port - which means adding a sound card. Hope this helps!

  • @TechRyze

    @@jamesfmackenzie Cheers. I do wonder if the Gameport can be added to anything else, such as a parallel or a serial port adaptor (doubt it). Otherwise, I wonder if it's possible to add any kind of riser board to the PCI slot, allowing both a Voodoo 2 and a Soundblaster to be plugged in? I expect that bandwidth on the slot / bus would quickly become an issue. I'd not studied the old PCI slot very much in the 90s, as it largely just worked when you slotted things in and installed drivers. Also, AGP was along, seemingly in no time at all for faster cards.
