The Best Midi Keyboard Controller for Beginners (And Experts Too) | Rick Cohen

Buy it here: amzn.to/2DxB6Ef
There are so many midi keyboards out there, and it's nearly impossible to pick the best one as they all have their strong points. I've used a ton, but I keep going back to one small, portable piece of kit because of it's one neat trick I haven't found on any other unit.

Yes the Korg NanoKey Studio is the best combination of features and capability in the under $400 (us) range. If you are a piano player, it’s probably not your style, but if you are a synth player and like advanced midi control (arp, scales, chords, etc.) it’s FANTASTIC. The X/Y Pad adds a unique control surface. Plus the bluetooth wireless is the clincher. Works flawlessly. Fit’s in a slipcase with my IPAD and I have a portable, wireless production and performance capability.

How well does it work with other DAWs? I have Studio One, FL Studio, Reason, and Bitwig and have wondered if this system would work, in full, in any one of them or all of them. That's my biggest grief about midi controllers so far: whether they work with the DAWs or if they're complicated. And I'm not that interested in controlling the mixer, play/stop buttons, but just assigning the knobs, the XY, the pads to a synth & having it use those same features you have specified: chords with the pads, scales, and arp.

There are nice gaps between the keys that prevent playing accidents.

Nice vid! Really interested in this controller for my OP-Z. Can you tell me if the editor app is always needed to switch midi channels? Ideally I'd love a controller that allows me to seamlessly switch channels to control all the OP-Z channels without an editor...

If they ever do an update. Make the pads different colors. Other than that, it's perfect.

I cant get it to work with new M1 MacBook. it doesn't show up in bluetooth. Apparently there are tons of us. How can they release this if it doesn't work?

Guys, how the hell do you figure out which backlit key corresponds to which scale type? :D Rick, you mentioned that "you can see...", I cannot :D I understand that each backlit key when tapping Scale +/- pads corresponds to different scale. Then, tapping the Octave +/- buttons set the key, and the backlit key corresponds to the root note of currently selected key. But I can't figure out the scales :(

Thank you so much, I have had this for over a year and I never used it much but now all my midi controlers are dead and this is what I have left working and I really needed a tutorial explaining how this thing works. Thank you so so so so much.
