We use a Dream Journal to learn the intricacies of our own self, so that we can find similar themes that repeat themselves. We are more likely to perform the question and test when we notice one of these dream themes. After watching the video, I realized that I was only 50% right which would make sense. Just like many other parts of Lucid Dreaming, you are giving additional information that I can't seem to find anywhere else. Not only that, but the extra information makes so much sense! I wanted to let you know Daniel that after completing the How to Explore Lucid Dreaming course, I have finally had my first Lucid Dream in many years last night! I'm sad to say that I forgot to perform the question, but had a feeling it was a dream. I performed the nose pinch test to confirm that feeling. I remembered to stabilize the dream and remembered to attempt a dream goal, but I awoke after trying too hard. The whole dream probably lasted 5 minutes or so. Either way, I was quite excited when I woke up, and can't wait for the next! I sound like a broken record at this point, but thank you so much for all of this great content!

This makes so much sense now. Before my process for dream journaling would be to just hope that I get an I interesting dream so I can write it down. And if I didn't? Well then I wouldn't dream journal. But with this approach it doesn't matter what I dream about, it's about my dreamselfs reaction and actions that I'm looking out for. Because since I was so focused on the environment I would frantically try to write down as much as I could about the "environment" that my entries would look something like this, "I find myself in some theater with people. We huddle around something and look at it. I accidentally bumped into someone and it becomes awkward. The dream ends." Boring right? Not only is it boring for me to write but also to read. Which is why I wouldn't reread my dream journal because it felt like torture reading these. But now I write my entries as if my dream self is a character in a story that's written in first person. Which immediately makes it more interesting to read AND write.

I absolutely LOVE dream journalling. I'm big on story writing, (working on a story that takes place both in waking life and in the dream world) and knowing how to write an interesting scene has directly helped me write better dream journal entries. The reader must feel the same emotions as the main character - if not more than them - so emotions must be described artistically. On top of that, reading your dreams back and reliving them again is such a blast every time. (But I'm also one of those seemingly rare people that enjoy hearing about someone else's dreams haha)

This makes so much more sense! I hear people say to analyze your recorded dreams to look for patterns so when you're dreaming, you will notice those patterns, but all my dreams are so random and there's virtually no pattern to what happens. But if I look at WHY, then maybe I'll see patterns! This video really changed the way I look at dream journaling, thank you for this!

Erm. What I get from this is, that to become lucid in the dream, one must become lucid in waking life., which now that I think about it, is not only quite a tall order, but also a very sensible and useful thing to do for personal development. Great video! It is so true that what it is about is spotting the differences. Which makes me think of when I had a very easy time getting lucid dreams, because I was depressed and almost never went out of my home. I could just say "Okay so when I'm not in my home, I'm most likely dreaming" and a lot of my dreams were not taking place in my home. So VERY easy. I've just recently come back to lucid dreaming again, and oh does it feel harder now that my dreams and waking life looks more like each other.

Thank you so much for your kind support Russell, I massively appreciate it. If you're dream journaling and nothing else, it would take a fair bit of time for you to become entirely familiar with the differences between waking life and dreams - historically, people who have done this (and stayed focused and curious about their dreams), tend to take about a year and a half for lucidity to start to flow regularly or semi-regularly (of course, this depends greatly on the individual). To speed up the process considerably, find the differences as outlined in this video, then in your daytime hours, look for similar psychological/emotional states, and then use those as cues to ask "Am I dreaming?" (seriously, and with a genuine expectation that the answer really could be "yes") and perform a reality test, I'd recommend the nose pinch test. I hope that makes sense? This form of dream journaling, done correctly, is the foundational practice for all meaningful lucid dream strategies, but it's always best to have multiple effective strategies acting in tandem - think of it like filling a bucket with water, if you use one tap, it'll take longer than using two. Take a look around the channel and you'll find other advice that will help compliment what you're doing. If you really want to stick with just journaling, just make sure that you're reading through your journal often, and becoming very familiar with the nature of your dream self, so that you are more likely to spot when you are in that state.

I think we use a dream journal to be able to know what we are dreaming about and what pattern our minds create in our dreams. Like for example I realised that dream journaling for me has helped me realise that in every dream I am with someone or more people and never alone. Other than that dream journaling is a great way to remember the dreams and analyze them. Another thing this amazing act that made me do is remembering my dreams a lot of times. If I suddenly stopped recording , I barely remember any dreams in the morning.

We dream journal because without recording our dreams most of them will simply fade a few minutes after waking up and we could miss important opportunities to find situations where we could have lucid dreamed. And we can recognise patterns in our dreams and use them, just like we are hackers trying to hack a computer system. The dream journal is a bit like our code book.

Hey Daniel, usually lurk on the channel, but wanted to say great video. I've been DJing since 2013, and today I learned something new- the distinct difference that the "why" part of DJing makes. I usually journal the events and try to formulate why I did certain things, or acted a certain way, or thought something, etc., but I never looked at it the way you presented it in this video. This knowledge is invaluable, top-tier, and brilliant- thank you for putting great quality LDing content out into the world!

  • @fredsfreshbeats

Hey Daniel! Long time listener/lurker. I have a question for you. There's a certain internet personality on the platform that provided his own tip on how to lucid dream. He's rather polarizing, so I won't name names, but the advice he gives is to try to remember the last thing you were thinking of before you fall asleep. He claims that it will train your brain to remember your dreams and then after about a week you'll just get lucid. I'm skeptical about it, and was wondering what you think about it.

  • @LucidDreamPortal

    @LucidDreamPortal

    Жыл бұрын

Hey Fredsfreshbeats, firstly thank you for your very kind support, it means a lot to me! So, technically no this won't work as it's a massive oversimplification of human psychology. He's essentially saying "in order to do this one difficult thing, do this even more difficult thing". Which when you look at it that way, it's clearly absurd. That said, the act of attempting to focus on memory, especially by engaging prospective memory (remembering to do something in the future), could lead to lucidity for those who get the balance just right. So, it's essentially an approach that could work in theory, but in practice would be nearly impossible for most people. I know the person your talking about and they tend to have a bit of a habit of taking complex problems and offering very simplistic "solutions" in a confident tone - which is a great way to become popular, but is also pretty misleading. I don't fall into the camp who has strong feelings about this person either way, other than them being a curious social phenomenon. So this isn't coming from a biased hater/fanboy mindset, just an observation. In short, it's partially true, but missing a huge amount of real world complexity. It's a little like saying "to become a millionaire, all you need to do is to start a successful multinational company". When it comes to lucid dreaming, trying any kind of mental focus can be beneficial, even if the principle is nonsensical, as there is a degree of suggestion and beginners luck for those new to the subject. But for regular lucidity, a more nuanced and broad ranging understanding of how one's mind works is needed. Generally, if something sounds like a caricature of an solutionrather than a fleshed out concept founded on a logical system, it's rarely much more than the intellectual equivalent of clickbait. I hope that helps.

Ive been dream journaling for like 3 years now and i mostly i record what happened in the environment and obsessing every little detail and still getting like no results at all, and when it started to include my emotions, feelings how how i interact with the environment itself, but prioritizing about what i am in a dream i started to get more lucid dreams compared to the last couple of years, you did explained it very well and not to focus on the subjectivity of the dream and stop obsessing every little detail in the dream but actually include what are you in the dream, what emotions, feelings you have and how you interact with the environment itself, totally a new different approach to dream journaling, most people overcomplicate this enough, and hate to admit i am one this nerd who does like 10K words writing about external factors in the dream lmao.

Feeling lost. Hopeful. I understand, I joined a school and we journaled based on symbols, trying to interpret. I found it to be... too subjective and indirect. I am the dreamer. I have learned how to wake up and influence. I have a part of my mind struggling, kicking and screaming right now. Why does it throw a fit? Even now, wanting to go on autopilot. Addicted to the comfort of easy, already familiar subjects. A fear of the unknown. Although this subject is one I am passionate about, the uncertainty of "newness" blossoms into red flags. If I face this fear will it subside like a storm fizzling out? I am watching anxiety and urges of resistance pour down, washing over me and dripping off like rain. Afraid, afraid, afraid. Of what? Deep breaths. Listen. Try. That's all required of you. So many expectations. So very tired. It's a journey, take one step it's alright. It's uncomfortable. I know you don't it. Picky, like being fed a new food with a strange texture. The inner voice says "I don't wanna", ready to cry. I think you'll like it. I promise it won't hurt you. Take a bite. First time riding a bike. First time swimming in a pool. I know the fear of trying. And I'm stronger. It's okay... one bite at a time.

My answer to why dream journal, (without listening to the rest of the video, though I should know this, having been following you a while...): To recognize the character of my dreams, so I can become familiar with the tendencies they have, including "dream signs", which hopefully will remind me to do a test to determine if I am dreaming. Also, it can help me spot things in my dreams that have been inspired or "seeded" by recent events in my waking life, so that I hopefully will notice other such dream elements that have been triggered by recent waking events. Also, it reminds me to pay attention to my dreams, which seems to increase my recall of them. I am probably forgetting something....

I will remind myself, when journalling, to focus more on the WHY (my motivations) and "WHO I am being" in my dreams.... and WHY the "WHO" I am being in them fails to lead to lucidity. I'd guess it is also important to take note of "who/how I am being" when I DO achieve lucidity, so that I can try to reinforce the tendency to be those ways, yeah? Thanks for this video!

Why do we dream journal: to increase recall, to recognize dream signs (occurrences or unusual objects), to have a written record of my dream experiences, to track repeating themes that are relevant, to recognize what triggers lucidity and how often I experience being lucid, and what I do once lucid. I dont have a voice recorder but i can come back to the dreamjournal and write it again but with the perspective of a lucid dreaming. i can add some details or some extra sketches. without my drawins in my journal i never remembered what the dream was all about because my handwriting sucks. maybe its time to buy a recorder but then again, i think it would lose me much of my time so i rather stick to fysical dreamjournal but when i am wide awake i can come back and add some details in the dream. and also that way i'm more alert in other dreams hopefully. also, when i have certain days like the past four days that i cant recall any dreams or they are very vague i can always think of the thoughts or emotions from the scenes i did written down. thanks for this helpfull video.

Well, I won't take to the comments and groan about how I hate dream journaling (even though I think my past comments on the subject are telling about how much I dislike doing it), but I will explain what keeps me from doing it. How I've previously dream journaled is through long descriptions of the environment, small details that didn't matter, and feeling like I had to write in a certain tense. What also doesn't help with that is how analytical I can be, often diving into numbers and certain patterns way to much to a degree where I will start collecting data on things that don't matter. While my journaling starts with these sentences that I'm motivated to write, halfway through it becomes a list of what happened with no data because I'm tried of over-thinking and writing down every little thing. Probably a flaw of being a perfectionist but I digress. That's what has kept me from dream journaling where there's so much that I feel like I have to do where it feels clinical and not something of my own. I honestly didn't know how much I would need this video because there's so much I can throw out - so much that I was doing that stopped progress that didn't matter. I don't need to talk about how the produce section was switched the dairy section of a store I was passing by in a dream - I can just say that it was distorted and possible write how it was distorted later if it was still bugging me. Easier said than done as I struggle to even journal a day, but I'll start by recording a dream from last night in a journal after I eat something and finish writing this. I would also like to add that not even journaling in the slightest does cut down on dream recall. Me and my friend often talk about our dreams in the morning but lately we haven't been doing that. My recall has dropped significantly. Hopefully dream journaling will bring it back up! Thanks for the awesome video! I'll have to give it a rewatch as I was very scatter-brained with anxiety trying to watch it as soon as I got home. I do also want to say that the Cosmøtron tattoo looks awesome!

Great video. I’ve kept my journal going to increase my dream recall and to keep my general awareness active in general and I believe it’s helped me become lucid along the way. Friends of mine ask me why I don’t try to interpret my dreams when I have so much information. To be clear I have wanted more out of my dreams and wanted to ask big questions when I am lucid in a dream. Perhaps asking the same questions in the dream world might render an affirming answer. However I think what you offer here is a simple yet perfect way to be more assertive in finding out important things about our selves without digging up the backyard. It’s fun to go on treasure hunts but I think this technique could provide some good results. My journal writing now will include this question of why- Who am I in the dream? Thanks!

Hi Daniel, I love your videos! I have been learning all about lucid dreaming through your videos and I thought of something. How does perception of time work in lucid dreams? Do things feel the same amount of time in lucid dreams and in real life or are they both different? Also, I think it would be a cool idea if you reacted to bad lucid dreaming channels on KZread and talk about why said channels are bad.

  • @LucidDreamPortal

Hey cyphery, thanks for the lovely words! In a lucid dream time is pretty much identical to waking life (the brain can only operate at certain speeds). But in non-lucid dreams you can have the illusion of much longer periods of time (similar in the way films can span longer durations in the storyline than the length of the film). As for reacting to bad lucid dream channels, it's something I tinkered with in the past - but it generally causes drama, and without wanting to sound snobbish, it's kind of silly for a professional dream researcher/teacher to do this, it's basically punching down. I'd rather produce the best quality advice on KZread and let people see the difference for themselves. Once again, thank you for being lovely!

Idk how I'm supposed to remember how I was feeling in my dream when I can hardly remember what im doing in my dreams anyways.. I have to write it down within seconds of waking up otherwise I will forget my dream. The memory of it slips away as I'm writing it down so remembering how I felt is even harder..

Yeah using apps is a pretty terrible idea, they tend to be focused on the wrong things, the brain doesn't process the information well, and you outsource the important skills for lucid dreaming to a device - when you should be developing those skills yourself.

@@LucidDreamPortal you know its funny, in story writing the key to writing an interesting story is for events to be causally connected. For example, "The King died and then the Queen died" is more boring compared to "The King died therefore the Queen died of grief". Basically the same thing you said, the "Whys" are more important than the details alone in a story.

Hello Daniel! Would you please explain why my dream recall doesn't really seem to increase? So, I can never write down my dreams after waking up since I got work, and after work, I relax and dream journal in the night. I'm pretty sure dream journaling at any time should still increase dream recall but I haven't had it happen. I keep the same recall level and the most I have remembered is 2 dreams at a time. Do you have any tips for me?

  • @LucidDreamPortal

You've pretty much explained it in your second sentence. Dream recall needs to be recorded immediately upon waking up, without that you'll almost certainly forget the vast majority.
