What do you think is the best new Lord of the Rings card? What do you think about this set, in general? Are you excited about it? What new cards slot in perfectly to your existing commander decks?

Best card is more than likely Orcish Bowmaster, not much else in the set on that power level.. Am working on a Gandalf the White deck, he seems quite strong also. Lotho and most of the hobbits have felt quite good also.. Samwise Gamgee is another potential top pick.. he can get Historic cards back.. which is fun to combine him with Boromir, makes boardwhipes pretty difficult to use for opponents even.. 😅 So far really liking the set and dont even have remotely all the cards.

The ring broke modern. There is no way it isn't an autoinclude in most decks. You need a flavor or gameplay reason not to play it IMO. It is just insane. Just imagine topdecking it late game and you realize how good it is. Very few situations in which you cannot have a line to steal a game with it.

At my prerelease I were playing Gandalf, Friend of the Shire, with Glamdring equipped. My opponent has the Balrog, Durin's Bane on the BF and I swing. He blocks my Gandalf, but luckily I have You Cannot Pass! on my hand, so I kill his Balrog. As it dies it takes my Gandalf with it. My opponent and I were geeking out over it for a good 5 minutes before continuing the match! Has to be one of my favorite MtG moments ever!

For “Call for Aid” if you are able to cast sorceries at instant speed, you can steal an opponent’s creatures on another player’s turn to shields down them and allow another player to take them out, or to give yourself enough blockers to survive a massive attack.

@@S0ilStudios Problem is that you can easily get into situation where you have for example 10 counters and 4 cards left in the deck - thus are locked out from using the Ring to enable Thassa's Oracle win. Given the fact that Mind Over Matter combos with everything and the kitchen sink that akwardness means you just use a different card. Also think people are undervaluing the ring. I will personally run it in cEDH and in every deck that can gain life or reliably get rid of it in a pinch. Untaping or bouncing is cute but not needed to make it good.

With orcish bow masters they talked about a sac outlet and a blood artist effect on the board in addition turning a wheel (22 damage) into 44 damage. However. Imagine a mirkwood bats and a sac outlet in play. That's 44 damage to each opponent ON TOP of the 22 damage sent anywhere else

Mirkwood isn't that good of a card to be totally honest. Yes, it's going to win games, but it's a four mana card that doesn't do any thing by itself. There is a HUGE difference between two mana and four mana, especially for cards that's primary purpose is to just be a combo piece and nothing else.

I think what might be fun about Spiteful Banditry is if it changes the calculus on otherwise straightforward decisions. Are you still going to chump, knowing you’re giving someone a treasure? Is it still the right play to sac that creature? Either it sits there and generates incidental value all game, or it makes opponents play around it.

Ancient Copper Dragon and Cavern-Hoard Dragon are both illustrated by the same artist, that's a fun coincidence. Or more likely not a coincidence and in fact a deliberate decision because the art on ACD is really good and wizards thought, correctly, "this guy draws good dragons".

32:22 One thing about dawn of the new age is that it draws the card at the end of the turn. Meaning even if it dies immediately it was a cantrip. That is not something that these effect ussually do and makes it a lot better. For a Boros or Mono White token strategy it is great. Even though it feels like we got tons of these effects recently I struggle to find enough of them to fill the deck so this fits great there.

@@MarcusWelbyJr Exactly! If it survives a single 4 player turn cycle you could turn 5 goblins at the start of your turn into 80 goblins by the end of the 4th persons turn. In my Krenko build I lean heavy into ETB/LTB damage effects so this can often be lethal within a couple turns. It pretty much requires that someone remove it or krenko or everyone dies. If you've got boots on Krenko and you keep a deflecting swat in your hand after casting this and it's a good day for gobbos. This card should be in every single Krenko deck ever.

Elven Chorus is going into my pet deck, Gyome, Master Chef. It's a creature heavy (38) deck that loves low mana creatures to make as much food as possible. I run a ton of +1/+1 counter synergy as well as the built in foodristocrats theme. I've currently got Long List of the Ents in there, and that's probably what's getting cut for Elven Chorus.

I don't understand the perspective on Spiteful Banditry. It's like a mana rock that you can kick to turn into a board wipe. The mana is inconsistent but you can save it up and later in the game you could easily be getting multiple treasures a turn. I think it's a red staple. It's a board wipe that's very easy to slot into your deck.

Without feeling too bad, like a notion thief, or that one white card that doesn't allow more than one draw a turn, even smothering tithe. 2 cmc is fine as a way to punishes aggro decks when your in a mid-rangey/ staxy deck.

I think Mithril coat is still very good on every commander deck that wants its commander to attack. Attack triggers with a commander thats a 2/5 are hard to pull of in later turns (Ghired). Being indestructible protects you from removal, but also from combat damage!

Subjugate the Hobbits will affect token creatures that are not copies, for example Angle, Eldrazi, Artifacts & Dragon tokens (like Smaug). If you're up against decks that make heavy use of tokens this may be a win-con, if not it's not as good but still a good way of cleaning the board of those opponent value pieces.

I was curious with the call for aid and phase out interaction would the cards you stole phase in tapped under your opponents control?

I would see spiteful banditry like this: How many times in a game do you see a 1 toughness creature you'd like to be gone? You can play this spell for effectively 2 mana (cause you get 1 treasure back) and kill it but also everything else with toughness 1. Then for as long as you have this card on the battlefield, you continously get treasures. Your opponents will most likely not remove it because there will be better targets. I would consider this card to be ramp and small stuff removal that goes around hexproof.

what about spiteful banditry for x = 0? it makes decisions very awkward for you opponents in terms of attacking/blocking/saccing and all spot removal (although the best are exile) nets you a treasure

Call for Aid in a Marchesa dethrone deck would still let you steal and keep creatures if they die. You just can’t steal from the person with the most life. I will probably put it in my Karlach, multiple combats, deck so I can swing with them 2 or 3 times.😊

Palantir is easily my favourite card in the set, you scry so you make sure that there’s gas on top and just let the guy know, “hey can I draw a card or do you want to take a ton of damage?” Who knows if your lying or not. I had a guy mill me for 2 and they were Dig through time and ethersworn sphinx and dealt him 17 damage on turn 4

Here's a thought for Orcish Bowmasters: Keep its stats and cost, but separate its Amass ability from its damage ability so that the former is only on ETB while the latter only on enemy draws. Still powerful? Yes. Still probably gonna be a staple? Yes. Anywhere near as abusable as getting both on both? No.
