The Best (Legal) Descent In The Lakes

A decent ride in the wilds of the Lake District has been on my mind for such a long time, and I had so many offers to be shown around.
I ended choosing James Vincent to show me around first, as we had spent time together the weekend before, whilst shooting the Highlander 2 for Deviate.
I left the route completely up to him, with a heavy emphases that it had to be fully legit, as I was filming for KZread.
I reckon he got it pretty spot on.

Fantastic edit again Andrew ! Been looking forward to this since your Strava upload. The hike-a-bike up Rosset Ghyll is enough to challenge anyone, I couldn't face it as a 1st climb! I place it at my 1/2 way point when doing this loop (starting from Borrowdale).

It's always sunny on the Lakes ;-) Borrowdale bash is a Lakes Classic, albeit a tad dull due to road sections. However... the decent from Watendlath to Rosthwaite is an absolute banger...and legal. Worth persevering the road sections for this.

100%, it’s weird having to check to see if the trails allow bikes or not first. Even although there doesn’t appear to be any specific distinguishing criteria. Bridleways appear to be the equivalent of a drovers road in Scotland.

Great video. On another topic though. I have been watching your channel for quite a while now and I began to wonder...is there an appreciable difference in running costs between your Deviate/Claymore and ebike? What sort of figures are you experiencing...on an annualised basis? Might be a good basis for another video particularly because you are probably better placed than most to comment - given the type and amount of riding you do, plus you have a foot in both camps.

Even on Dartmoor the footpath can be better than the bridleways. It's not fair. You are lucky in Scotland. Watch out for the ramblers if you do use a cheeky footpath!
Gets pretty warm in Langdale when it' sunny. Wife and I camped at Angle Tarn one summer and got heatstroke walking back down to Old Dungeon Ghyl.

It was the lack of wind that made it wise when I was there. Heat stroke is no joke. Thankfully only had it once before.
@diggagt3574

@@McTrailRider yes, I think that valley can be very sheltered and also aligns southward. The sunlight and heat seem to radiate from all sides. Apparently, even 3 pints of cold beer won't cure heatstroke.

Michelin Enduro race tyres, very heavy and strong. 100% go tubeless, it significantly reduces the chance of puncturing.

Tech 4, V4’s, they are the best brakes I’ve owned to date 😬
how do you get on with the fidlock bottles? especially the bigger 800ml one? does it rattle much? looks like the design would allow them to rattle like mad, especially the bigger they get?

I highly recommend them. I certainly wouldn’t go back to standard bottles. I’m running two 450ml bottles at the moment and have previously run the 590ml. I’ve just ordered the new 750ml though. I’ve not experienced any rattle with any so far.

Great vid much better than my poor attempt at filming it. To be clear you have no legal right to ride on footpaths and open access land, this is very different from it being ilegal. Just saying 😃

@@McTrailRider just for the record the track up Langstrath to blackmoss pot is a track with public access so no issue for bikes, after that it's a foot path up to the bridge. Interestingly most of that section is now a permissive bridalway thanks to the BHS, unfortunately it fords the river before the bridge.

Not sure about it being "best descent" that's one that could be debated by many :) You had better conditions for the 1st descent than when we did it as part of a two day ride: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4yWqaqKpqXHcZs.html
A great route, ride and filming as ever Andrew . But I do have to take issue with you about the legitimate trails that we can ride here in England which differs considerably with Scotland. Whilst your comment about riding the footpath instead of the legal bridleway may have been said tongue in cheek, too many 'bikers ' ride illegall trails down here and don't need any encouragement from a self respecting and much viewed biker and u tuber as yourself. We all need to respect our landscapes and keep treadprints to a minimum...you may sense that this is my pet hate about mtbing !!!! Enjoy the remainder of your riding in the Lakes and as always I look forward to your next video.

To that I’d respond with “ do as I do, not as I (jokingly) say” 👍
@markianross
Жыл бұрын
Looks like our laws might be changing soon to be in line with Scotland's "Right To Roam" - Labour have committed to introducing this if they win the next General Election, possibly meaning footpaths won't be off limits to mountain bikers any more. Personally I think the footpath / bridleway designations in England seem to be mainly quite arbitrary with no real logic behind them.
@jonm7272
Жыл бұрын
And by that token the Kinder Scout trespass ahould never have happened, and no one would be allowed in the hills unless they pay some parasite landlord for the right to kill some wildlife. Bollox to the law, and 'legal access'. Ride wherever you like, but do so with respect to all other users and the trails themselves. Make way for walkers and take the time to chat to those you meet on the way. It was illegal trespass that gave the Ramblers the (still too limited) access that they currently enjoy in England and Wales, why shouldn't mtb follow the same trajectory?
Pure “Fix the fells” vandalism from start to finish. It’s an absolute disgrace. I afraid there’s not many legal routes left that haven’t been destroyed. Honestly I’d stay in Scotland. 😂
