Thank you so much for uploading this! I was having a hard time finding someone who did a step by step guide for the exact AliExpress model I purchased! Sending love from japan❤
Love this Jake, excellent video as always and genuinely useful getting these comparisons when there are so many screens on the market. Funny that they often use select/L/R because I've been playing a lot of STEPPER and it uses select and L/R for its main control system! So I'm making a GBA with the FunnyPlaying touchpads only my main GBA for that one haha

Yeah it would be nice to just have everything fit the original shell
awesome video and very helpful , thanks!
Love your stuff! FYI the color pallet options are helpful for the visually impaired. ✌🏽
Any reason to not just cut the touch sensor wires off?
it seems like the part that separated from your LCD was just the protective housing. they tend to have a plastic frame and foil backing that protects the panel itself. So that plastic frame probably just came separated from the panel which is laminated to the glass.
Great video! I've become skeptical about touch pads though. The first GBA I owned had two touch pads for brightness and palette. I don't know the brand and haven't really tried to find out (could be a CGS). However, after half a year, the palette pad just randomly activates, or gets stuck on a colour.
2:12 The color pallet thing could be beneficial for people with color blindness I think.
Thanks for this review just ordered my screen hopefully it’s as easy as it looks lol
Great guide
How are these IPS screens perform under sunlight/outdoors ?
from some of the other videos of this kit i’ve seen, it looks like the screen is somewhat regressed, and if you have it at certain angles small bits of the edges cut off. i was wondering if the funny playing kit had something similar or if none of it was cut off reguardless of the angle
great video, thanks . i received that kit at home looks great with regular cartridges but its giving me issues with Az , does anyone had the same problem? any solutions?
2:20 Color Pallettes is not dumb! There are some people who have problems with color. Like my friend who loves retro gaming. He has a problem with bright colors especially Neons. Even brightness adjustment can't do anything with his problem. When he saw some reviews about color palettes in gameboys, he didn't hesitate to buy those gameboy screen kits. He prefer the purple and pink palettes for those are not causing him headaches. Sometimes those kit were made by choice or intentional maybe for some people with those kinds of problem.
Killer video ! Got one
I have the exact same kit. I cannot screw the gameboy down. Neither the mainboard nor the case. It clips in at the bottom, but not the top. Every screw, even the ones from the original case wont work and are hard to screw down to a point where the board feels like breaking. I really dont now whatto do, ive been trying for days
I tried this kit. Main issue is the L and R shoulder buttons feel a bit too loose and the shell doesn't seem to close tight enough no matter how much I tighten the screws and I'm afraid of stripping the screws if I try to tighten it further.
Do you know if there are any shells compatible with this screen besides the ones you can buy with it on their aliexpress shop (without trimming)?
I've been watching your videos for some time now and you helped me a ton on my quest to build my first macro, it's time for me to try doing an IPS screen mod, just bought it from the link on the description

@@ratzpop nothing major, it's just that the shoulder buttons and side pieces I bought didn't initially fit, but later I was able to make them fit with some trimming, and the left shoulder button is a little bit lower and doesn't have good feedback when pressing, but I was afraid of making it worse if I replaced with an aftermarket one, so regarding the screen kit it went 100% well!
So what shells are made to fit these particular screens?
Sorry if this is a noob question but is it possible to just tuck away the touch pads in a position that keeps them from being activated, instead of removing them entirely?
So my shell unfortunately broke and i was wondering how difficult it is to rehouse the ips display into a new shell after already installing. Does it just slide out like it slid in?
Did you trim a shell or did you buy one compatible with this screen? If so, from where? Can we see a video of you trimming? The provided image of what to trim is actually 0 help to me.
The hole under the sticker is used to adjust the screen btw
thanks man, i just used this guide to install this mod! my first time soldering and it turned out perfectly! though my shell came with a damaged battery cover which is very annoying, hopefully their customer service can give me a new one...
Is the pixel grid effect on this one a real grid? The FP IPS V3 kit doesn't integer scale on the horizontal axis, so its pixel "grid" effect is actually just scanlines.
Do you have issues with the menu in game? I just installed mine but have trouble unless it’s at start screen
So if I go the non solder route is it not possible to turn frame blending on and off?

Love your content 😊 I'm thinking of buying a screen for my GBA & GBA SP i wanted to ask what's the best screen for each device currently available in 2023? There's so many different names & versions it's a little overwhelming for me lol, also i wanted to ask does the newer V5 screens higher resolution show or is it not worth it? I couldn't find a video of anyone going in to detail about the that aspect, everyone usually just shows the screen & talk about the colours & modes etc.. I've also read some don't do integer scaling for GB/GBC so I'm a little overwhelmed & confused.

My best guess without seeing it is that something is bridging. I would double check that your solder job isn’t touching anything else around it and/or you didn’t pinch any of the wires when you put the shell together. It’s very common for those things to happen and cause the brightness controls to either not work or go crazy. Especially double check that you solder to the correct pins on L and R and that your select wire isn’t touching any of the vias (tiny holes) around tp2. Hope this helps!

@@JakeSimmons alright I’ll check those out after work. I’ve noticed if I haven’t played in a bit that everything starts working properly again. Then after about twenty minutes it goes haywire again. Can you remove the metal shield(behind screen) after sticking in to the front shell? I'm planning to use touchpads and if they go wrong, I'll solder wires to the motherboard. I hope that we don't need to pull off screen from the shell to just remove metal shield behind the screen.
@JakeSimmons

After installing a bunch on these, I just install the touch pads because it’s difficult to remove the shielding. They aren’t very sensitive so you probably won’t have any issues of them accidentally going off as long as you don’t place them where you commonly touch the game boy. But to answer question, yes you can remove the shielding after, it’s just gonna be a lot harder while it’s stuck to the shell
