The BEST Kind of Woodland Photography

Today I take a walk in the woods for some autumn photography ... and end up crashing my drone!! ... I guess flying it blind whilst trying to look all stoic is not such a great idea!! 😆
I did get some great shots of the autumn scene here in mid Wales though, so that was a great success ... but did my drone survive!? That is the question ...
I suppose you could called this a landscape photography vlog ... but I prefer on location landscape photography!

Sometimes when I am making my videos, I take a lot of filming kit with me and one thing I look for in the planning stage is how I can easily get to that location. Thanks for watching and keep shooting 😁👍

    Great video, Mike. I really liked a lot of the shots you got and once again, your drone footage is excellent. Damn shame about crashing your drone, but isn't it amazing how tough they are. I know you must have been upset about crashing it and very relieved when she cranked right up and took flight again. Let's just say mine has a few dings as well. I had to send it back once after a crash and DJI took care of it right away. Looks like autumn is in full swing over there. Enjoy it and keep up showing off all the beautiful scenery. Take care, my friend.

    Hey dude, Yep, just as I turned around, I saw it go straight into that branch ... and then it just stayed up there!! 😆 It is great that they can take so much abuse ... I remember when my mate crashed his Phantom 2 ... dropped out of the sky and smashed to bits ... due to a faulty battery ... he ended up buying a completely new unit. 😆 Yep, autumn is finally here, although we have been moving once again, so I have missed a lot of it. Hoping to get out this week though. I hope all is good with you dude! As always thanks for watching 😁👍

    Challenging venue - comp and environment - but you pulled out some good shots, Mike. Water drop on leaf on ground my fav - especially for a hand-held shot. Nice that you’ve perfected your “watch me disappear” video effect😊. Useful Tamron tip - is the lens weather sealed? Old saying “When you come to a fork in the road, take it”. 😊 Was not sure of which comparison shot used polarizer (one on right?) - labels would have helped, IMO. When you brace camera on bridge, do you still have IBIS on? Ah yes, the drone-eating tree; common in UK, I understand😊. Cheers!

    Thanks Paul! The tamron has weather sealing, but I think I have taken it out in a lot of rain over the past few weeks ... so it might just be me thinking it is waterproof!! 😆 The one on the right was the one with the polarisation at max ... sorry, completely forgot to label it ... 🙈 I tend to leave ibis on all the time these days. with the sony cameras it doesn't really matter like it used to with the old dslrs and IS. That is the second time I crashed the drone in two weeks ... definitely need to be more careful!!! As always thanks for watching dude 😁👍

    Awesome video! Nothing like wonderful woodland photography to welcome Fall (err I mean Autumn 😁) The slightly muted shadows complement the "magical" feeling of the trees. Glad the drone survived. It was a nice shot :D The focus stacking was great! Specially because of the motion of the waterfall was intact. Biggest lesson for me in this video is the reminder to bring a polarizer for controlling reflections 👍

    Really nice video Mike. Some great tips. I feel pleased that when you posted the first shot of the wooden bridge I thought "I wish he'd focus stacked that!" and then you did! Go me!! I often get exposure brackets just in case but forget to consider the focus stack.

    Hi Mike, nice to be watching this episode in mid January! I loved taking that woodland walk with you and you demonstrated some good composition tips (and what not to do with a drone ,ha,ha!) Could you recommend a polarizing filter for the Tamron 28-200, please? I just received my latest Tamron lens, the 20-40 f2.8. It's nice lens for the A7C and it is smaller and lighter and less front heavy than the 17-28 which I also own.

  • @mikesphotography

    Haha! It seems like a long time ago when I filmed this one!! Luckily, no drones were harmed in the making of this video ... 😆 I use the freewell filters for my lenses, and the great thing with the 17-28 and the 28-200mm is that 67mm filter size ... no need for stepup rings!! What is the filter size of the 20-40mm? Here's the link for the freewell filters: geni.us/Freewell-CPL I hope that helps! 😀👍

  • @chryseass.5143

    @chryseass.5143

    @@mikesphotography Thanks Mike, I will check the filters out. Good news-the 20-40 f2.8 has the same 67mm filter size and it has the latest Tamron external design featuring the USB port for easy updating through the Tamron Utility app. I have already updated mine to ver. 2 and it couldn't have been easier. The new lens look is definitely more premium to my eyes. My only complaint, so far, is for the focus ring which is so close to the top of the lens that it is awkward to use with the lens hood in place but maybe a filter would solve that issue. I think for travelling the 20 to 40 will go nicely with my 28 to 200 with a good focal length overlap to avoid too many lens changes ( a problem I have when using the 17-28 as a walkaround.) Ha,ha- I woke up to unexpected snow this morning so I appreciate watching your autumnal ramble even more!

    The canon cameras do have a flip screen on some of their cameras, but you would have to do some research on which one to get. The 850d/t8i does have one and would be a good camera to strap to your telescope if it has an adapter to accept cameras. Also if you are shooting through a telescope, you will need one with a tracker mount so it tracks the movement of the stars. This will enable you to take longer exposures giving you better images. If you search for astrobackyard on KZread, the guy who runs that channel gets some great images. I hope that helps.
