I don't even have a TJ but this was so thorough and really great to watch!
I just read the owners manual and followed the instructions there to remove the dome light fuse in the fusebox behind the glove box.
Thank you so so much for this! I found the switches. I think the correct ones are OEM and the one that does not work is aftermarket. Just order OEM switches and you are good. This modification took 1 hour with the 3D printing. Works perfectly, thank you!
Just did this. thanks! I don't have a cool 3d printer, but now thinking I should get one. Ended up just getting a 10m 1.0 nut and it holds just fine with space for the door. Doesn't look as clean, but functional for now. Before I just pulled the fuse, but found I would keep it out even when the doors went back on because I'm too lazy and keep forgetting about it.
This is a beautiful solution. And you did a fine job on the video. Better than 90% out there. Well done!
I have an 05 I bought new. Been using the same spring type adapters you didn’t care for in this video. You have a unique way of fixing the problem but for $4.95 and 30 seconds I have the same results.
I just ordered a pair of switches and will be doing this upgrade this weekend! Thanks for the 3d print file too!
Thank you for making the video. I had the adapter nut printed online and found the switches for cheap. Very slick.
Why didn't Jeep think of this?? All TJ's should have had these on the assembly line. You should sell these, you would make a fortune. Let me know, I'll be your first customer!

Thanks for sharing your research and hard work. Nice job.
Thanks for posting the thingiverse link, just ordered it from Print a thing in a color of my choosing to match my Jeep. Yellow Jeep and a good solution for the Win, yes there may be a bunch of other ways to do this, but I choose this way. Thanks poster.
great upgrade i am making this upgrade to my jeep this weekend thanks a lot
Good example of practical use for 3D printing. I'm surprised Jeep didn't think of this before manufacture.

Actually... Jeep did. There is a simple fuse that you pull located behind the glovebox. Apparently, this poster never did a quick 30 second review of his owners manual prior to spending hours concocting this "simple fix"
@MaconLightning
4 жыл бұрын
wy wybulldog The switch is a whole lot more “simpler” by only having to pull it out t disengage the whole door light. A lot more convenient for owners too, and better yet when it’s time for doors to come back on then you just close the door then it resets! A lot easier.

Yellow TJ for the WIN!!!! Great solution, thanx.
I removed the fuse on mine and it still works by turning the headlight knob BUT the aftermarket alarm installed is not triggered by opening the doors anymore.
While this looks great in theory I actually find the fuse easy to get to and it gives light illumination while turning off the jeep for a short time which I like. This setup eliminates thus factory feature that is automatic when turning off the the vehicle. This was well thought out by jeep. I even made a little handle to the fuse to be pulled and there is a spot to store this fuse in the fusebox when not needing door pin switch to work.
@Dr_Kenneth_Noisewater

Pulling the fuse is dead simple - No obscure parts, wiring, or 3D printing required. I didn't know that about the light delay and I like the idea of putting a little handle on the fuse.
Thanks for the video! I did this mod on my 97 TJ restoration project and it works great. I also made a video on my channel. Always looking for Jeep video content for my channel. I did post a link in my description to your video to give appropriate credit where credit is due!

Awesome mod dude! I wish I was technical savvy like you to do it lol.
Anyone know what Mercedes models came with these switches? Looking to see if I can salvage a pair instead of buying new. Great video and wonderful solution. Thank you!
Very sharp idea! Nice job
great idea.. Will add this to the todo list. Thanks
I got my switch from pelican parts it’s a Mercedes trunk lid switch works great
What gauge are those male weather-pack terminals that plug into the existing 3 hole harness?
As with anything everybody has different ideas, That being said I enjoyed the thought process and problem solving skills involved in this vid. This is first one i've seen from you. Must say very interesting.

What's the switch called? Or the site you picked it up from?
I got the switches can you share the 3-d file for the nuts please 🙏🏻
Those over price springs I got for free when I order my tube doors. They haven't came off while driving. I've closed the doors on them once or twice, but there was no damage to my door. I think they work pretty good.

On my tj you Just turn the headlight switch to the left and it turns on my dome and floor lights. I have no dome light switches in my doors. It’s a 2000 btw
Why the 3d printed nut? Would the original nut not work?
I just pulled the fuse. If I need the interior lights on, I simply rotate the headlamp switch and the interior lamps turn on when needed. Cost? ZERO.

ZERO NINE - Locate the fuse panel behind the glovebox, helps to take the glovebox off. Do not recall off hand the specific one as it was 20 years ago, still have the Jeep. But, it was labelled on the fuse diagram, also might have been identified in the owners manual. Your interior lamps still work just fine , just have to turn them on with your dash switch. Let me know of you can't find it and I can check tonight when I get home from work.
@brenden4968

What year is this Jeep? Mine doesn't do that. I take my doors off , mine doesn't come on.
Fuse 4... use your dimmer on turn signal to either turn on or off your interior lights.
Could you have used a normal hardware nut instead of printing a nut?
Pure genius!!!
Nice find. I just removed the bulbs myself.
This is a cool idea and very well described. However, Jeep designed fuse 4 to be the switch for door off operation. I fail to see how this is a simpler solution than removing the fuse and storing it in the glove box.
@TAZ95C4
Жыл бұрын
Agreed. This is way more involved than simply pulling the glovebox down and pulling the fuse.
I really like this idea. As my Jeep I just bought came with the sensors for the doors already removed this isn't going to cost me much more than putting stock back in. What size crimps did you use to fit into the stock plug?
@TimNummy
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I had to grind some thinner as I couldn't find the proper size...
Yes they did. You can literally just pull one fuse. It takes about 5 seconds to pull the glove box down.
adding a switch to the dash would be some wiring but if you added a switch at the bulb i wouldn't be bad. In my nissan pickup at the light itself it has a switch for always on, always off and on with the door switch.
@TimNummy
6 жыл бұрын
That's a good alternative as well... I actually wouldn't be surprised if there's a dome light from another car that fits in the Jeep and also has a switch already. I still like the idea that these automatically return to normal operation though.
cool stuff there. as beeing said, get some black abs before next summer so your switch nut wont "melt" in the heat :D
@TimNummy
6 жыл бұрын
I've just never been motivated to use abs having read how much of a pain it is to print and store and such. I might order some black petg if this pla has a problem but we'll see how it goes. I'll post a followup video should I need to remake them.
Thank you great idea
Why Jeep didn't do this I have no idea..but I would definitely buy this .
You do realize on the jeep tj. That after 20 min. The light shuts off automatically. Mine does. If light is on while driving alter keeps battery charged. Now at night light sucks being on while driving so still a hassle.
I can't find the switches.
Yeah, pulling the #4 fuse is soooooooooooooooo hard!
@amale4202

Do you not think this is an ideal solution? I mean, it would be easier to wipe my ass with my bare hands, but I still chose to go that extra step and use toilet paper.
Why did Mercedes make those switches that way, ? So you could leave doors open ? Pretty cool
@WilliamRandol
5 жыл бұрын
They were for the trunk. I guess it was so you could leave the trunk open without draining the battery with the trunk light.
Do you only do to the passenger side or both doors?

Here is where you can buy the Jam Nuts - www.ebay.com/itm/M10x1-0-HEX-JAM-NUTS-NICKEL-BRASS-25-pcs/173676015212?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Quadratec has a light switch that goes into that fuse and goes underneath the glove box. It’s really simple and is like $30
I just made a switch. The, "off," setting is when the doors are off. The, "on," settings is when the doors are on.
Just take a Sharpie marker and black out the steel mounting nuts. Problem solved without needing a 3-D printer.
@TimNummy
3 жыл бұрын
The nut I made actually has a centering step on the back of it to keep it from slipping around in the hole, not so much the color.
You could do all of this or you could just pull the fuse that says door switch defeat behind the glove box 🤦
Great idea but extremely complex. You used a 3D printer to create a new part.
@TimNummy
3 жыл бұрын
It's literally just a nut. Any nut, including the one that comes with the switch would do. I just wanted a reason to use the 3d printer (which, all things considered, this is an extremely simple print/part) Thanks for watching though!
So why doesn't anyone realize the Jeep installed a fuse in the fusebox JUST for this reason. Its called the door light bypass fuse. Pull it out, your done. Need light? Turn on your dome lights normally with the light switch on the steering column. No fuss, No cost, 30 seconds.
@Kennykoo65
5 жыл бұрын
Jimbo Funny, just bought a 1998 TJ and read the manual which indicated a fuse literally called door defeat. Put a fuse in there today and now my dome light works when I open door. No mods necessary and apparently contemplated by Jeep.

True but I want my dome lights at night. It's more of a hassle having to pop the fuse in and out. I did this mod and when I run with my tube doors all I have to do is tug on the door switch.
Or just buy a dome light bypass switch that has a fuse. That way you don't have to finagle one and take a chance on breaking the factory door switch.

This is way more work than taking a spring off occasionally lol

@CubNole

TimNummy Okay here I go, pulling a fuse doesn’t require me to install another switch. There, I argued.
@TimNummy
4 жыл бұрын
@@CubNole obviously. I said flipping the switch, not installing it. I guess if you don't mind having the dome light all the time and you just pull the fuse once, then that makes sense. For someone who prefers having the dome light nearly all the time but doesn't want my battery to die on the occasions I take the doors off... A little bit of extra effort to make things way easier for the rest of the time I own the Jeep is worth it.
all you had to do was push the original button in, and drill a hole big enough for a paper clip. put a paper clip in the hole and its done
If it's that easy to pull the switch out why not just pull the switch out and leave it out?
Shame on Jeep Chrysler for a poor design however I respectfully disagree with all this work for an interior light. Not many people have access to a 3D printer. I appreciate that fact that you kept the dome light in factory working order. It's just more work then I'm willing to do and I never remove my doors and the light still bothers me so I installed an on/off toggle switch out of the #4 fuse. When I don't want the lights on I reach in and turn the switch off. Back on for factory conditions. Easy, fast, and inexpensive. Thanks for sharing, nice work.
Jeeze...i just pulles the fuse, bought a LED flex light from academy ran the wire though the roll bar and wired in a toggle switch. Took me like 30 min at the cost of 20 bucks
Plus we all don’t have a 3D printer laying around
@TimNummy
4 жыл бұрын
Gosh, the comments about not having a 3d printer are exhausting. You can literally use any regular nut that fits the threads on the switch. The 3d printing was not the point of this video.
What a waste of time. You can buy a 15 dollar part and do nothing but pull your glovebox out.
Just remove the switch and no cost in my 2006 TJ✌️
Remove the fuse meant for when you take your doors off there is a specific fuse that you can take out and you can still turn your interior lights on and off with the doors off and the fuse out this is completely pointless
This is overkill. Just take the fuse out as designed.
Lol I just pulled the fuse. No big deal.
Your so called overpriced springs haven't failed me yet. They don't get crushed by the doors, and they don't vibrate off. Just buy the springs and save yourself the hassle because I'm sure a lot of you don't have a 3-D printer like me
