Bells Beach means history and heritage for both surfing and Australia. As the longest-running event on tour, it is a proving ground - an unforgiving lineup that tests the endurance, power, and fundamental rail-to-rail surfing of today’s progressive athletes. The deep sense of history that echoes through the Bells bowl, combined with the pressure of the fast-approaching Mid-season Cut, makes getting a win and ringing “The Bell” one of the greatest honors in the sport.

WSL you need to pull some strings, João surfed better than 99% of the roster. Cutting him would be foolish.
This was the best heat of the year! They were literally replying back and was a sick battle!

For me there has been two Standout Heats in the season until now. Both times JJF was in it but more importantly both times a rookie who probably isn't going to make the Mid Year Cut and has to go back to CS level was in it and pushing JJF. Joao Chianca deserves to be on the CT more than at least 20 other guys

Totally agree! He surfed SO good! I thought he was going to take John down! Then John got that 10 point ride (should have been!) and HAMMERED it! Those Chianca brothers got some major surfing Mojo going on in their genes!

Joao has really good style man, his bottom turns are so sick. the way he connects off the top into a good bottom turn is textbook.

John can really only beat himself in these conditions and Joao must be the best and unluckiest Rookie in a few years and losing him to the cut just shows how wrong the cut and the seeding system is.

Joao really is the real deal. No one can compete with John in conditions like this. John is the best surfer to ever jump in the water, no one has ever performed at the level that he does so Joao should hold his head high. Looking forward to seeing what he does in the future

I agree, JJF is the best I've ever seen. I think his free surfing in heavy conditions is what really sets him apart. The footage of him paddling into the outer reefs last year was some of the most thrilling footage I've ever seen.

Feels so unfair, if Chianca surfed any other heat in the Round of 32 he would have won. Usually we shouldn't compare scores from different heats, but in this case it's obvious that he was the second best surfer in that round, and yet, he got eliminated.
Chianca fantastic new talent and very explosive. Love the guy. John John, the absolute most talented and graceful surfer of his generation. He is not explosive like the top Brazilians, but it always feels like he is floating and just the most beautiful surfer to watch bar none. That precision is ridiculous. Kudos to both surfers.

Um ótimo surfista! Mas dizer que é o mais talentoso já é de mais!!! Gabriel Medina é o mais completo em qualquer mar, em qualquer condição! Os números não mentem!!! JJF e Medina estão em outro patamar! Não esqueça que os juízes sempre elevam as notas do mesmo. Se Medina estivesse no circuitões a história seria totalmente diferente!!!

J J Florence bashing that lip that was already pitching over was highest level surfing. He met that lip coming down and his board was going up. Surprised that lip did not break the board. Speed + timing = amazing execution.
Chianca’s carving turns are absolutely sick…the way he holds them that extra moment is so stylish.

I thought if you fall it’s an incomplete ride? We see guys fall on the end section all the time and get docked points for it. That fall 9.2 doesn’t make any sense.

It does if you understand the judges were biased and actively trying to give him a chance to win and he needed to get out from John's 2 wave combo score to have a shot at it.. Gifting him that ridiculous score (the highest ever in WSL history for an incomplete ride) makes perfect sense in that context.

I haven't seen this wave in detail yet, but what didn't make any sense was JJ winning 8.93 on the first wave.

Nah, he wasn't as smooth as JJF, but the judges still gifted him a 9.23 on a wave he fell on. Highest scoring wave in WSL history for an incomplete ride. Even with the judge's charity, Chianca can't beat JJF!

He had at Pipe and Sunset ,his backyard . How far did he go ? You saying he should only run his heats when the conditions suits him . It did happens on a numbers of events such as Fiji , J Bay , Chopes and even Pipe yet so far he got only one Pipe . Anyway for me there are only two surfers today out of the curve and J J is one . Also there is no doubt he won this heat .

@@bbsthegoat nah, he won't make it because he got tough seeding draws and had to surf against the best surfer in the world 3x. Way worse surfers are above him at the moment (including some who choked at Pipe), due to luckier seeding.

They gave him a high score after he flubbed the end of the wave. That is no underscore.
JJF second wave way underscored compared to his first maybe his first was overscored and it balances out but still judges be inconsistent

25:32 Chianca falls on this wave and STILL gets a 9.23? MASSIVE overscore by the judges. That's the highest score ever in WSL history for an incomplete ride. It's so transparent they were just trying to keep him in the heat. Judges love to keep overscoring the Brazilians.

Yeah it is odd score in the end, it was his best wave, three huge moves on a bigger wave until he fell off, he was on his way matching JJ's high 9 if he completed it but he didn't.

@@pv4504 Webb, Toledo, Ferreira, Pupo, Medina, and now Chianca, all constantly over scored, all of them Brazilian. With Brazil now the WSL's 2nd largest market the judges cater to the brazzos with overscoring more than any other country's surfers.

@@gustavoraupp4075 O pior disso é que todos os anos são assim, daqui uns dias vão inventar uma regra para ter somente 2 Brasileiros no circuito. Ano passado fizeram de tudo para os brasileiros se enfrentarem nas oitavas e nas quartas, ainda bem que não funcionou e tivemos 1 e 2 lugar
