The Best Eurorack Rig Build Guide. HINT! It's not the modules but a mindset!

Музыка

I'm been on this ongoing journey to build my "perfect" eurorack system. Realized I've been looking at it all wrong. The "perfect" system is the one that gets used and inspires. So it's not a set of modules, but a mind set and a workflow. Definitely made mistakes but learning a whole lot more. So I'd thought I'd share a few things. As always, let me know your thoughts! What are you building right now?

Rule #4. Totally! Even though I’m still pretty new and only own 4 modules, I’ve been able to get sooo much out of them and learn them inside and out. Where I see people with massive racks but are usually only using like 10-20% of what they have and all those modules can do. My favorite beginner module has to be Expert Sleepers Disting mk4! Since it can be just about anything ( but one thing at a time ) it has been a great way to learn how things work, figure out what I would want next and even what I might not need even though I thought it would be cool to have at first. And thanks for the info on the case! My little 40hp rack is currently in a tupperware lol. Thought about one of these but I might just build my own instead 😆

Great video! :) A note on power. It very easy to plug in the power the wrong way if you disconnect the power cable from the module. The other end of the power cable is keyed, and most power supply have keyed connectors, that's less common on the modules, so keeping in the cable on the module is a better way imo.

This definitely true. Great insight. I've had times where I was wondering why a module wasn't working and it was on the module side. What's really dangerous are some modules especially VCA's or mixers that can actually somewhat work passively, but the signal will be weak, noisy and distorted. If you make the wrong diagnosis, you can falsely think the module's gone bad, or have to trouble shoot your patch not knowing why some signals are weak or distorting. Ugh!

ХАОС devices is written like that because it's written in cyrillic (x=h, c=s, so it's haos... and pronounced like chaos ofc). Also they modules are named after post-soviet cities (Batumi is in Georgia, Tallin is in Estonia and etc.), so they have that slavic-soviet theme going on, and they are based in Poland, as i remember.

as a Russian speaker Xaoc totally makes sense since that's how you spell the word "chaos" in Russian which is pronounced kinda like house. Not everything is spelled in latin. It's a Greek word after all and it's spelled as χάος in the original. So if anything the Cyrillic version is "correct" :)

For years I've had quite a few high-end rack mount synths in my studio. More recently, I've gotten into sample libraries, e.g., Native Instruments, Spitfire Audio, EastWest, etc., and found that I've been using the outboard synths less and less. I've even made a few critical comments about massive Eurorack installations, believing that the same aural results could almost certainly be achieved by software modular synths, e.g., NI Blocks, Voltage Modular, etc. About a month ago my gear head knob twiddling nature got the best of me and I decided to build a Eurorack modular synth. I've sold or am selling most of the rack synths and am going to use the space, and funds, for the modular. This installation will, apparently, be somewhat unusual. In hours of online searching I've never seen anyone else building a Eurorack setup in NEMA equipment racks, although the hardware, e.g., rack mount chassis, is available for that purpose. That has some aspects that are different from the usual skiff installations. Initially, there will be five 3U x 84HP and two 1U x 84HP chassis with room left tor one more of the former at a later date if desired. I'm documenting the progress and plan on eventually making a KZread video about the build. Many of the comments in this video mirror my own ideas about the complement of modules to be installed. I've been selecting from a wide variety of manufacturers, avoiding only Behringer and Roland modules. I will have two VCO's, a dual classic analog osc and a stereo wavetable osc. I'm particularly concentrating of obtaining a wide variety of modules that can modify the voltages/audio in as many ways as possible. One thing I decided to avoid is dedicated drum modules. It makes more sense to me to use samplers that can both play any possible type of percussion sound but any other sample as well.

I am new to eurorack, but have been into synths for decades. There seem to be two schools of thought about modular. Some like the big multi function modules and others like individual units to build with. An underlying issue is also cost. Some of us are on a low budget. There is also a quandary for many regarding high end perfect sounding modules vs. low cost and quirky modules. There are a lot of modules which are very interesting but do not get the love they should be getting because they aren't trendy. HP is always a problem too. Everything in your rack is very HP hungry. I would be interested in seeing a video about the imperfect rack and dealing with limitations.

Yes sir .. sort of by accident (sparing you the tale) .. I've just started my 2nd skiff. These 2 skiffs, having very different purposes. And too, the portability of them, means that I can take one of them out of the music room, to our living room, where we have a Kurtzweil digital piano, and can hopefully capture some it's patches/sounds, .. plus, I'm now in the shared living area, which, in my case, is refreshing .. versus, the isolation of the music room, which isn't probably the best, for long durations. With the trend of packing more punch, in less HP, .. now, skiff sized units appear to be doing what only larger, not to portable units did, in past times. So, am about to put into practice your sub-assembly theory. Thanks, man.

A better comparison of VCAs would be pixel shaders rather than power supplies -- VCAs can add a lot more life and movement to modulation than anything else when you modulate your modulators, not just volume. Signals from Chance, Zadar, Batumi really shine when cross modulated, e.g. a "boring" LFO from Batumi becomes very dynamic if VCA'ed by an envelope from Zadar.

I was going to get a case like that, or the bigger one with the cover because I liked the idea of the 1U. I ended up getting a 208hp Pittsburgh Modular case that was on sale, and I don’t think I will miss not having that 1u space. Some of the space will get used up by an output module, but its like 4HP. If I want to add pedals Strymon makes a stereo I/O module thats another 4HP. What happened was I got my hands on the Dreadbox Dysphonia and built that, and then the Buchla TipTop modules I was interested in came out. I play on doing a more analog focused case around Buchla and similar stuff. Then I might do more mutable/dsp kinda modules in another case.

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE The PGH case I ended up with was replaced with a new version I think, but mine is a special edition so it’s stained red which makes it look pretty cool. The Buchla modules coming out are pretty inexpensive but take up a bit of space so I had to go bigger. Original plan was the little 62HP or 108HP with a 1U ornament and crime plus a few mutable modules for sound generation for more of an ambient thing focused system. I was browsing and researching and tempted during sales but held out because I didn’t want to just rush into it, but people were saying get more space than you think you need. Most of the mutable modules are in VCV or miRack so I can still mess around virtually. Going and putting stuff into modulargrid and then re-creating some of it virtually to see how I vibe with it saved me some money. hah

I've been a touring musician my whole life and just getting into Synths & Eurorack at the age of 62. I think you should "play around" with open source software versions like VCV & Cardinal to get your feet wet with Eurorack....and if you have the funds start out with an analog Synth you can afford...especially the semi-modular synths so you can design sounds, sequence, and then explore the patching capabilities that they provide. DON'T start out by buying a Behringer System 55! You will be lost, frustrated and not have a clue what to do with it. The remake of the old Moog systems are very complicated with an even larger learning curve.

Tubes have the characteristic that they produce harmonic distortion when overdriven, which the human ear finds pleasing. The same result can be achieved with solid state electronics if desired. I think tubes are a bad idea for Eurorack installations. The draw much more power than solid state gear and produce a great deal of heat, neither of which is desirable in a modular setup.

While i agree with some points, i don't see a modular case as a "swap all the time" business. For me it's more like designing an instrument with building blocks. It's certainly tempting, but i wouldn't swap pickups in my guitars all the time or neck profiles or tuners, even if i could. I am on a search for an ideal component, but once i find it i don't need the ones i bought while searching, so why would i keep them and swap them once in a while?

So many similarities in my modular experiences and approach. I started years ago with the Pittsburgh 360 9u case and I just filled it up with stuff. That was overwhelming in all ways for my brain. I sold off a lot and went to stand-alone hardware. That took up too much space and I decided to really work through what the hell I wanted to do. I finally came up the point of my instruments is to create music as quick as I can so I can write lyrics and create songs. That led me back to modular and I bought a 104 palette case. I had the same excitement and let down-ish with the case. I almost returned the case after trying to set it up day 1. I set it aside and as you said, realized I had to remove the rail and plug in all the cables first. After I put in my modules, I realized I wanted two cases. One case with the sounds and one case with hand on controls. My intent is to have no patch cables blocking the way of me playing with sequences and modulation. Maybe I will do one of those doepfer multicores to connect cases so I dont have to re-patch my controls to the other case.

xaoc is the Russian spelling of chaos. They have this whole Eastern Bloc thing going on with Soviet towns for module names and Russian was spoken throughout the Soviet countries, it was the universal language of the entire bloc, kids had to learn it in school etc. Wait, how come Soviet, you may ask, Odessa is still Odessa, right? Well, my hometown Karl Marx Stadt is a device name too and that one was renamed after the wall came down. They also describe themselves as working class electronics and are committed to staying affordable, i.e. it’s basically the Soviet repair spirit in action. In the Soviet union everything was repairable and if you bought something electronic, it would come with repair schematics usually, but since everything was built with whatever was available in the factory at the time with parts shortages commonplace the resulting devices were often somewhat different than what the schematic said and boards could start looking somewhat chaotic due to substitutions. This is also why Soviet synths sound so special, many are somewhat chaotic cobbled together with sheer ingenuity. Basically chaos is somewhat of a Soviet motto and it’s spelled xaos for a reason!

Haha! I don’t mean to say that repeat modules are bad. Not at all. It was just me trying to combat my tendency to want to “solve” something so I lean into gear that i know. So it’s easier to just by more of the same things when I felt personally i need to explore a bit more. Euro ack is SO rich and diverse so I want to support and try as many as possible. But yeah multiple stages are totally alright by me :)

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE I really like super versatile modules. Mutable Instruments is a master of them, so is SSF or Klavis or Intellijel or 4ms. Problem with that is of course that you need to invest time learning them and use them regularly to be able to fully use their potentials. So for certain kind of functionality, I like to have multiple of them, especially for modulation sources and utilities. On the other hand for OSCs, VCFs and effects I prefer having many different kinds.

lmao as much as I love make noise, they don't make their modules very readable. even when a module is doing something relatively normal they go out of their way to make the whole thing look/feel like alien hieroglyphics.

I think your thinking is very interesting. I'm not sure I agree but like how you make me consider and internally discuss these matters/points in the beginning of this video. For anyone who might be interested I put some of my thoughts regarding these points here: 0) My equipment is packed down atm as I'm in the process of rearranging my space. (This relates to: "4)" ) 1) Blank spaces: At least in a bigger case, blank spaces are good as it makes sense to get to know your modules properly before you add more. In this way you will more easily find what might be lacking, like often more vca's, mixers and modulation, rather than more voices and effects. On another hand, similarly to @UCjc8LZ4Q6CCKftUckLBxxKg, blank spaces distract my neurotic sense for order. 2) Same modules: Depending on how experienced you are and how much space you have it can be good to buy the same modules. Like if you have tried many vca's or envelopes, and found that one brand suits you the best, or you want to save space and get smaller modules and thus might not find many to choose from. I got a few different envelopes but sometimes wish they were the same as it is easier to dial in the same value and compare their settings. Saying that, it is nice to have different vca's as they colour the sound differently. I also get most of my modules secondhand so chanse plays a big part in what I have and get. 3) Rearranging: I should probably do this, but will probably not : ) Related to this, I make a patch and keep it like that for weeks and exhausting its possibilities before I pull the cables out. Also my economy (thankfully?) don't permit me to buy modules that often so for this reason to I don't rearrange what I got very often either. 4) I might at some point get a skiff as a control station with sequencers, end-mixer, etc. I got two cases with two rows each and will at some point get a third before even considering anything like that. Two row portable cases works well for me as I like to build complete self-contained systems/synths, and this way I can more easily bring either one or two cases and a few pedals with me on the bus to a jam or whatever. Also see: "0)", this relates to the space I have available, as skiffs would take up more of it and be less tidy. A small skiff can be handy though, for a more focused exploration of an advanced module. Saying that, I don't like very compex modules as a reason for me to eurorack is to see the connections and the order of functions. If I was good at playing with synths and computers I would probably buy "Electron" and more "normal" synths than eurorack. Particularly to @UCjc8LZ4Q6CCKftUckLBxxKg. - Funny that you compare this pallet case to people, as if you have many lovers at the same time. But what do I know, maybe you do? -I think these Intellijel cases should have hinges so one could tilt the back wall for easier access to the bus board. -I agree with your critique of "Makenoise" as their design is rather confusing to look at. On the "pressure Points" module I read "Preserver Pants". Also Noise Engineering's design annoys me for the same reason. -You also got euclidean sequencers in "Pamela's New Workout".

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE Nice! : D I am 54 and started with piano some time before 40, and got into synths and eurorack about 4 years ago, so I don't know much about anything music related really. But it's fun to learn new things and have a steeper learning curve. Yes Euclide is in Pamela's, but if you know Pam's it is more a sett and forget kind of module as it is a bit cumbersome to dial in the settings. Not hard but a turn turn click click kind of thing, so to change settings while playing is not it's strongest side. You just have to dial until you get to an "E", and there you have E step and E trig. I found this video + part two useful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lquFpKRtj5jLcc4.html&ab_channel=TheDigitalLost and this one: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWmumKV8g8nMnNI.html&ab_channel=RedMeansRecording And here is another I just found now: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZmLuM2Tg9Kbo6g.html&ab_channel=Ihor
