The Best Disney Princess Movie Ever - Tangled (Movie Commentary)

Фильм және анимация

Tangled movie commentary
Tangled is something we held out on making a movie commentary for because we wanted to do it at at a good time and leading up to Christmas of our second full year as a channel seemed like a solid time.
Tangled is one of the best animated movies out there and most definitely our favourite Disney Princess movie. The story, the characters, the dialogue, pacing and balance of serious moments with comedy are what makes this a truly special movie.

I think Frozen is good too! I feel like Frozen was both over hyped and praised and over criticised (I was one of the people who dislikd it just cause of the song lmao). Considering I've heard nothing but good things about Frozen 2 I feel like it'd be a bit unfair to the series creators to call it a popularity win and nothing more. We probably wouldn't have had our Disney musical Renaissance without Frozen either!

They said they didn't get why Eugene's dream would be to be alone, but I bet it comes from life in the orphanage. He spent his childhood sharing everything in a house with perhaps dozens of children and is now living a life of crime where he has to constantly watch his back. It's no wonder he just wants peace and quiet. He wants to be alone where he can relax and to have things he owns that he'll never have to share.

For real. The fact that they didn't just fall apart after their tiny new baby girl, the rightful heir to their throne, a beautiful child that could have been taken for any number of horrifying reasons, was abducted while the queen was still on bed rest is baffling. They didnt spiral into oblivion, they didn't lie to their people, and they didn't stop trying to do right by them. Their people were betrayed too. Their princess was stolen. That is enough to put cracks in any nationalist's belief in their nation. But they also kept going and strongly supported their king and queen. And they never stopped looking. Not a single one forgot about her.

I know the Budz didn't like the "now I'm the bad guy," line, but for me it's always been one of my favorites. Accusing your kids of villanzing you is such a common defense against literally any parental criticism-- and while this is the scene where Mother Gothel is literally being revealed as a villain and therefore the context is kinda wonky, I think it's neat that they flipped it on its head. Usually, kids are like "no, you're just not listening to me," or become desperate to appease their parents' hurt feelings but this movie is like "yes. yes, you are the bad guy."

It also has the heavy weight of Gothel akcnowledging she thinks Rapunzel's the clear villain every time. It's a very narcissistic and manipulative tactic, and it works, as Rapunzel always feels like she's at fault for _everything._

I'm not gonna lie, when the tear fell near Eugene's eye and the healing began I nearly started screaming. In the original story, the prince is thrown from the tower by the witch, somehow survives, and loses his eyes to the briar patch he landed in. When he finds Rapunzel again, she weeps and her tears somehow heal his eyes. I didn't think Disney would be able to incorporate that into the adaptation, so I was really happy.

wow. I knew she was old, but not THAT old. maybe unintentional on the creators' behalf, but what's interesting about that is how people equate age and maturity. with narcissistic parents, they tend to be emotionally stunted or refuse to/are incapable of being healthy adults. you'd think with age would come wisdom, introspection, and ego loss, but no, not always. to take it further, some n-parents will distance themselves or 'lose power' as their child ages up into independence, but some will continue the abuse just the same even into old age and when they're literally reliant on their kids to live, if they see they can still hold some power over them.

I heard they consulted a panel of women on their ideal male character and Flynn Rider is who they came up with. It reflects because he’s not a “good” guy and is up front about not wanting to help her initially and then discovers a bit of himself and changes, not FOR her, but because he wants to be better and decides to do the right thing. It’s so good.

Fun fact in the German original the reason Rapunzel is named Rapunzel is bc her mother was craving Rapunzel lettuce (a German field salad) while she was pregnant. Her father went out to get some and ended up stealing the lettuce out of Mother Gothel‘s garden, who then in return stole young Rapunzel….yeah, no comment, as a child I never realised how strange that actually is 🤨 Also in that same version, Gothel actually throws the prince out of the tower and he falls into thorns, that then blind him and when Rapunzel finds him she cries and her tears end up giving him his vision back, but it that was too intense for Disney

The hair doesn't even simply heal, it literally reverses time. You would think that part would be obvious since mother gothel preserves her youth with it but its not widely acknowledged, most people think the hair heals and glows but NO. It doesnt JUST heal, it undoes the injury! Its even more meta! The song is also not just a song, either, its an incantation (or yk, the basic word for it is a spell). It glows once the magic is activated but can only reverse time when the full incantation is spoken. ‘‘Make the clock reverse, bring back what once was mine. What once was mine'' Rapunzel basically has the power to bring people back from the dead

Oddly enough, Rapunzel’s relationship with Flynn is kind of like her relationship with Mother Gothel at first. Gothel is using her for her hair, and Flynn is going along with Rapunzel to get what he sees as valuable, the tiara. But the difference is, Gothel never learned to love Rapunzel for her but Flynn did. If you watch the scene when Rapunzel and Eugene meet, when he's tied to the chair, and you never watched the whole movie, you can easily think that he's the protagonist and Rapunzel is a quircky fun character he met at some point. They have such strong personalities and none of them have any kind of "protagonist trait", which make them so much relatible, compeling, even realistic and unique.

The tear thing is a callback to one of the original stories ( not the Grimm version) where it was always her tears that healed/rejuvenated and as she grew up the witch started torturing her when conventional means of getting her to cry stopped working. The torture would ramp up everytime she got use to it (I believe the witch also used some of the tears to heal Rapunzel so she wouldn't risk killing her). After the prince is blinded she heals him because he made her cry with his kindness not pain.

The witch punishes Rapunzel by cutting off her hair and then banishing her a desert where she gives birth. The witch then tricks the prince into climbing back up the tower with Rapunzel's cut hair and he falls into sharp brambles below, which blind him and he wanders around aimlessly until he wanders into the same desert that Rapunzel and his children are in and Rapunzel uses her tears to restore the prince's sight. my relationship with this movie has always been really complicated (it came out when i was 8 or 9. my mother was like gothel personality wise so i saw myself in rapunzel, but i look a lot like gothel so the person i would act scenes out with - also abusive btw - would always insist i play her), but it's been one of my favourites because i related to it so much. as a jew, gothel's design combined with the plot* reads a lot like blood libel to me, and i really appreciate you pointing out the design. not many reactors do and i think it's this movie's biggest flaw and needs to be talked about more because when it isn't, this messaging is subconsciously seen as normal in media, if not true irl. *curly haired, hooked nosed woman who uses magic to deceive others (into thinking she's young) kidnaps a blonde child to use in a magical ritual. she's an overbearing, bossy, manipulative mother who keeps herself and her 'child' separated from the wider community. no good (or any other?) characters look like she does, and although a subplot is about how 'ugly' =/= evil, that does not extend to jewish features which, especially at the time, were and are widely considered ugly in the real world. imo, the plot alone makes it quite concerning, but choosing to portray the characters with these specific features (not just gothel, i'm also thinking about rapunzel's blonde hair, which was the focus of the movie + her small, upturned nose, shared with most of the other female characters making gothel's otherness so clear) feels like a deliberate choice. even if it was an honest mistake, there probably should've been a sensitivity test? or someone should've pointed it out? idk.

Disney created a whole new hair rendering system based on volume for Rapunzel. They went with the title "Tangled" instead of "Rapunzel" because they wanted to appeal to a larger audience. They felt "The Princess and the Frog" underperformed at the box office because the word "princess" was in the title. They did the same thing with "Frozen," which was loosely based on the story "The Snow Queen." The behind-the-scenes info for Tangled is super interesting. It changed the way they approached future movies.

48:15 I think part of the reason this movie feels so well put together is because of how closely it actually follows the 'monomyth' or 'hero's journey' formula. When I was in high school, I had to do a project where I compared The Odyssey to a modern book or movie (using the 'hero's journey' structure) and I chose Tangled. It was almost surprisingly easy to sit down and break the movie up into the different archetypes and stages.

Rapunzel was always my favorite princess, even before she was a Disney princess! I grew out my blonde hair to be long just like her when I was little! So when tangled came out, I was elated at how wonderful the movie was, giving her the Disney princess movie she deserved! The soundtrack is amazing

One of my biggest favorite movie to watch, especially when I was little. I would watch this almost everyday and would reenact and say the lines along with the movie. I remember grabbing a long bed-sheet, wrap it around my head as if it were rapunzel's hair and tie it around the bar of my window and 'slide-down' to my bed like how Rapunzel finally slid down from the tower.

Another small detail that I like about this movie is that she says "did I mumble" instead of "did I stutter", cuz so many movies (even kids movies) mock stuttering and it's so ableist. I'm glad that iconic line didn't get messed up by her saying it that way

@@Ultimaniacx4 the problem with that is "did I stutter?" I'd a widely accepted phrase, even if it is ablelist it is a common saying which is accepted. So having her say that wouldn't show how bad of a character she is, it wouldn't convey that message to an audience who uses and accept the phrase. It would simply be making people who do stutter uncomfortable, seeing how normalised it is mocking their disability

Every single little detail in the movie is so skillfully done, I can't help but admire it every time, I can never get tired of it, I didn't really feel this way about a Disney movie until Turning Red recently but Tangled, absolute classic in terms of princess movies and just good movies and storylines in general, love it so so much!

i never saw the healing tear as "one last one," but as a reveal that it was never exclusive to her hair; the flower's magic saved her life not just her hair, it's in her entire being, it's just that the hair was very obviously linked to it. she's also never really had reason to cry while singing the song, let alone be in a position for that tear to land on someone that needed healing.

There are a lot of theories about how Tangled and Frozen connect, the two main supporting factors behind it are Rapunzel and Flynn appear in a cameo as visitors for Elsa's coronation and during a mini series dedicated to Olaf, when he talks about Rapunzel and the movie, he says that she is 'an old friend'.

Rapunzel is turning 18 she wants to see the lanterns for her birthday. Flynn is 25 I believe. So 7 years is the widest princess to her 'prince' age gap in newish Disney movies. (Unless Marvel comes up, but in newer princess movies.) (I heard that Snow white was 14 and Prince Florian was 27 which yikes but I think they probably changed it in remakes)

I totally relate to every sentiment of you guys with this movie. Gaslighting was at finest, when Rupenzil was always going back and forth about leaving the tower and ‘betraying’ her mother. I really felt that on a personal except that in my case I didn’t leave without my mother knowing, I simply went on college trip against my mother’s wish cause I’ve literally have never been out of my house before other than school so this was my only chance. Let me tell the whole trip I was panicking and crying cause I felt like a horrible daughter who broke mother’s heart. I even went on to make numerous calls at home😂 hence I never got to enjoy that trip at all and never went on any trip again. Tbh realistically Flynn shouldn’t even be alive because of the amount of time he has broken his nose and ribs and then his death followed by revival through tears.
