i still bounce around using different ones. My main one is Logic, but i do track drums often in Pro Tools, then for live Playback for shows i use Ableton. I do want to try a few new ones

For me the key here is not so much about the wars but about Warren allowing us to get a glimpse of the diverse selection of amazing tools we have available to us as DAW hosts. These are truly great times for the producer. Nice one Warren and team and thank you. 🙂

Been using Studio One for 10 years now. Before that I went through Cubase and Pro Tools, and before that I used a hardware/software DAW system by Ensoniq called PARIS, which I still have, though I only use it to retrieve audio files. I got Studio One in 2012 on a special NAMM discount of $20.12. I loved it immediately. It seemed analogous to working in a recording studio, which I had done for many years. It was everything I had wished ProTools was, in fact, it's very similar to ProTools, but streamlined and more user friendly. And more stable. I looked at a number of other DAWs when I was helping a friend pick a DAW, and some of the popular ones seemed to be designed more for copy and paste production using loops and samples, rather than being aimed at recording and mixing audio.

I may only be 21 but crazy how similar mine and Roberts stories are. My dad did house music in the 90's and used acid (as well as the DAW with the same name) it was my first experience with a DAW, I got a BR80 by roland probably for an early teen birthday present and went on to make many pink floyd sounding tracks. it came with sonar LE (cakewalk by bandlab) it was the first dwa i only really and truly understood and has been my weapon of choice ever since. The fact it is free when other DAW's command such a premium is beyond me. It is a fab DAW and has never limited my creativity once.

Mixcraft pro 9. I'm new to mixing, but mixcraft is east to use. Price was a consideration as well. I purchased Mixcraft pro 9 for $129. It does everything I need so far, and again, is super easy to use.

Back in 1998 when I first checked out DAWs I basically had 2 options: Cubase and Cakewalk. I mostly work in audio and only occasionally use midi. At that time Cubase was basically a midi program with 2 just tracks of default audio. It took me hours to open up more audio tracks and then the program became unstable. Cakewalk immediately let me use as many audio tracks as I wanted along with full midi functions, so I bought ProAudio 9. After a few years I upgraded to Sonar and now I'm using Cakewalk by Bandlab. I can still open Cakewalk projects I created in 1998!

I started with Pro Tools but made the switch to Studio One V1. Now have Studio One 6 and I am very happy with it. Like anything it could always be improved but for me, I feel most comfortable with it. I have also used Digital Performer, Cakewalk, Luna, Samplitube and Harrison Mixbus. Harrison Mixbus is a great sounding DAW, really love that Harrison console sound. Just wish it had the Studio One workflow. Maybe someday the two companies will work together, I can only hope. Used Logic for years but when I moved to an Apollo I checked out LUNA when it first came out. All I can say is I've never had to go back to Logic, I really like LUNA and the videos that UA put out to help support users.

Have they gotten Luna to work better with hardware? That’s been my sticking point with them early so I’ve stuck to Logic plus I really like the improved Logic samplers and drum machine so I’ve been putting together my own samples into a custom drum machine.

They all have pluses and minuses. You really can’t go wrong with all the major DAW’s available. I think that because folks choose one over the other, they are emotionally attached to it and therefore will fiercely defend their choice. Personally I use Studio One; free version available too. It does the job just fine. I will not claim it’s “better or worse” than any other DAW. It’s all about the user, not necessarily the program.

So glad to see mixcraft finally included. Been using since version 7. It's a super simple program and fully featured. Absolutely love it.

Been messing around with Ableton, but we never really clicked. Now I'm using Studio One and it just sits right with me - and that's what it all comes down to at the end of the day :)

The best DAW is usually the one you get familiar with the easiest then continue to use. There is absolutely no point in changing it once you are familiar enough to start creating. They all do the same thing but in slightly different ways. You can make just as good a song in whichever one you use. They all use the same technology and can pretty much use the same hardware, although some hardware is better integrated with the software from the same vendor. I love Studio One because it was the most natural progression from the old Logic on the PC. Therefore I stick with Presonus interfaces, and currently use the Presonus thunderbolt Quantum 19” rack mount.

Just started watching this video but had to pause to comment about the awesome intro :) thumbs up!

cakewalk fan and user, here. really excited about it, even though it drives me up the walls sometimes. very complex software, you can do pretty much anything you want to, and stuff you didn't know you could do, video, surround, whatever, with some things being easier than in other daws, and some more difficult, as you would expect. i love the pro channel, which basically gives you a proper open format mixing console, with the sound to go with it - if you want it, otherwise the pro channels can be hidden and deactivated - instead of just the standard faders with boxes, like most daws - only it's a fully modular, build it yourself, console, which is even better. you can create your channel strips individually, with several choices for each module - famous compressors, saturators, tape, spacial tools, limiters, reverbs, preamps, and even summing, including the channel variations. and the eq, while providing the optional ssl curve ("gloss"), is fully parametric, with q-s everywhere, individual band on/offs, which i've always wanted on an ssl strip, and nobody provides - various filter shapes and slopes, etc. - it's only missing the band solo function, the ability to add a second instance - or more bands - and a bit of accessibility, if the pc is collapsed. of course, you additionally have a choice of other, separate eqs, compressors, etc., available as standard insert fxs - you have the boxes, too, so you can go either way - several of each, in fact. i love the pc - the open console format, but modular and with the flexibility and variety of vsts - best of both worlds - but in the end i still landed on using "boxes", though, cause there are, to my preferences, some better sounding, newer vst versions of every type of module included, but that's not to say the built in pro channel modules sound bad, and you can absolutely mix with those alone, if you want the open console format. so you can choose your workflow, which nobody else offers, to my knowledge. you can create and save effect chains, track templates, gui configurations, etc., it has automatic staff generation from midi data, midi from audio extraction, all kinds of functions. fully customizable control bar, with modules for all kinds of functions, you can size and order them how you want, and place the whole thing where you want to. native audio stretch, quantize, pitch correction included, in addition to the optional melodyne - even though that's implemented a bit more clumsily, and not as reliable, in comparison to melodyne - it's the standard elastique pro - but it's there. humanization for midi, drum maps, everything you can think of. the editing part is the major drawback - some daws, like reason - are easier and more intuitive to work with, in that department - but you you can still do anything you want, and more, only with more clicks and a little more hassle. there are some bugs in this department, too, which i hope get addressed in time, but they do come up with updates regularly, so fingers crossed. reaper, too, is very powerful in functions, highly customizable, great sounding engine, very low cpu use, but a little more complicated, to me, with its own routing and plugin integration, and without the open console format, no embedded channel input gain, form some reason - i don't get why that's missing in daws - you cannot fully maximize the console, which i really dislike, great real time time stretching capabilities for audio - which cakewalk, for instance, doesn't handle that well - you can do it manually, but it doesn't automatically sync great on tempo changes, but i think it's on the list of fixes - which reaper does very well - reason does that well, too - overall a great daw, with a great price. i like the multi vst chain frame, where you can work an the entire chain from a single window. harrison 32c shines, for me, through the open console - though not modular, or fully tweakable - and especially its great sound - which can be deactivated, though, if you want clean. its routing, though, and various other aspects, to me, are unintuitive as hell, and some things you can only do in specific ways, whereas in cakewalk you can usually perform the same operation in various ways, depending on where you are, in the daw, which is great. it could use some preamps - harrison could - the control bar (or the gui overall) is not that customizable, and it's kind of expensive. but the sound, and those compressors, are worth it, plus the open console format. the eq, though good sounding, could use a q, in my view, and the parameter value visualization could be improved. waiting for luna to come out in windows - same deal, semi-open console format, fully customizable and modular, summing - can't wait - even though it's expensive as hell, from what i've seen - i know, it's free, but it's really not. the console frame is free, but if you actually want anything in it, you gotta cough up through your nose. still waiting for it come out, though, and i'll see what i can put together. really like the concept. but if cw solves its editing clumsiness and bugs, i will probably stick to it even then. the functionality and concept are just great, just a little simplification and reliability are in order. and the staff you can really talk to, maybe a bit set in their choices on some aspects, which is to be expected, but overall open, knowledgeable, and very well intended - which is miles above many developers who don't even bother to acknowledge communications. reaper team is pretty responsive, dedicated, and user oriented, too, which is not something i can say about reason's or harrison's - even though i've had a good experience with someone from harrison's support. daws aside, the guy with nuendo, in this video, should really release that song. didn't play much of it, in the video, but from what i've heard it's the good stuff - some cool floyd vibe in there - so don't be selfish and keep it to yourself - excellently mixed, too. so then he can go on and have copyright problems with youtube, on his own material. cause it's 2022, sanity is no longer in fashion.

One of the best for home use that no one ever talks about, easy to use, sounds great with its built on circuit emulated EQ, Compressors & Tape Saturation, is Harrison Mixbus. Mixbus 32C is what I use for mixing and is the pro version of the regular version. Harrison are always offering great deals on their DAWs, both sound amazing

Agreed when it comes to the best sounding DAW, MixBus 32C beats everything hands down. It has some quirks which Harrison will eventually figure out but again, I also use it for that additional work and sound that I cannot seem to get from any other DAW. I usually work with Nuendo 12 but export stems and work on those in MixBus 32C 8. There is a noticeable difference, and it's a great one. Once you hear it, you will want to hear it all of the time going forward.

Using Logic Audio, but thinking on changing to LUNA.

For me -Reason 12 for simple sequencing and great effects! -ableton for easy audio editing and I love the retrospective recording and the simpler -cubase for big sessions and mixing

I use Logic Pro and then export to Harrison Mixbus 32C. I like the Loudness Analyzer & Normalizer feature, in Mixbus that has output settings for Spotify, Amazon etc.

You’re doing a fine job here Warren. Of course I want to know more about several of these software offerings, it’s great that you’re bringing them to my attention. Otherwise I am happy on FL. Now I’m over to that Mick Gordon interview. 👍

I cut my teeth on the good old Portastudio back in the '80s - such a wonderful piece of kit that opened up a whole new world of creativity! Having sadly let music take a back seat for far too many years, I struggled a bit when faced with modern DAWs - I tried a bunch of free programmes and demo versions until I found Studio One, and I've stayed with it ever since. I still haven't tapped into more than a tiny fraction of its full potential, but it lets me work spontaneously the way the old Portastudio did, so it's great as a musical "notepad" for my ideas like I was used to - but with the ability to non-destructively completely rework them - something I could only have dreamed of in the old days! I've got to say, though - if everything goes down and we're reduced back to basics, I'd be quite happy with a Portastudio, so long as I had a goodly stash of cassettes to record onto!

REAPER!!! It proves that most DAWs like PT, Studio One, Cakewalk, etc. are NEEDLESSLY complicated. It should have been part of this video.

Presonus Studio One v6, works great on Windows, has all the features I need, specifically the Pipeline plugin to incorporate external hardware.

Funny intro, you made my day, thanks! BTW: I use Logic since day one. It has a lot of great features and it seems that some of the pro's seem don't know that those even exists. It also has its flaws an limits.

Great Video! I’ve been using Ableton Live for years. I like it because you can tweak it live and the session and scenes view. I’ve taken classes to learn it but it always seems to go down a rabbit hole when I try something specific. Looking to try out Logic Pro soon. Just to switch things up. Thanks Warren and friends!

How long comment can I leave? Haha... First, great beginning of this video, Warren!! I currently run Logic and have been running ProTools, Cubase, Nuendo and even SAW (old audio software), Notator and so on, and I feel it would be great if I could "borrow" a few functions from almost all these DAW's to use in Logic. I think it's safe to say that Pro Tools no longer is the only "Pro" software because ALL the DAWs today are "Pro". The audio engine and the main functions are often all the same, meaning no DAW is bad. I feel Logic has so much for a very low price, but then there are features that I would like to add or change, for example the routing of the sends. I am sure this is something all DAW users feel, that one or more features are missing in their DAW. If there only was one DAW delivered empty or with a base regarding features where the engineer could add features and functions from ALL the different DAW softwares, or if for example Logic would allow importing of functions. Now this would probably not be an easy thing to do, but I feel often in DAW's there's one or a few functions I miss. One thing I really miss in Logic is that it is not possible to arrange the channels in mixer view. Of course on a real desk this is possible but takes a bit of work, but why Logic doesn't allow re-arranging of the channels I don't understand. All the DAW softwares are good enough for music production etc, but some functions are bette than others. These are tools only, and so it all comes down to what fits your workflow, so I use Logic because it is overall what best fits my workflow, but again there are functions/features missing, but at least most of Logic gives me what is right for me. ... Can I write more? haha...

Logic Pro. It's easy to use, and you can start in GarageBand and then switch it right over to Logic Pro for more finesse if needed. And it's made for my Mac, by Apple. Perfect combo!

I'm a novice at recording but have been playing instruments for years; I now use Garage Band , with long term goal of transitioning into Logic, but I also use Cake Walk and Native Instruments DAW (it came with Maschine Mk3) and MPC Beats.

Loved the opening sequence. I am going with Joe Gilder (Luke Skywalker) on this one. Everyone has their personal peferences, often based on what they are familiar with, however at this point Studio One is definitley leading the pack with exceptional innovation, features and user experience. I think the other long established DAW's are slipping toward the Dark Side and Studio One is moving into the light.

Great series. I've tried or used almost all of them and every DAW has pros and cons. It's nice to see them each get their moment. Logic Pro is my preference, but I also use Ableton Live for live gigs. On Windows, I'd probably go with Studio One or Cubase.

Totally agree! So much more to mixcraft!

We had Mac in the house for professional artwork so we played with GarageBand for fun music. It was a simple jump from there to Logic, coupled with educational discount, so Logic was the logical conclusion. I suspect they are all good enough in their own way but I have no reason to change now.

Reason12, great creative flow, stable as few. Got some killer stock units, as well as a very intuitive way to construct devices/sound design.

Awesome video Warren, I worked and released songs with 5 different daws ,I started with Cubase and after years went back to it. The best as you all know is the one that you know the best. Period. Besides that Cubase is your choice.

Great Daw Wars 2, Glad to see Bitwig, Waveform Pro, Cakewalk, and Mixcraft Pro included this time around. Luna looks cool, wasn't familiar..... Not sure why FL Studio was just mentioned with link and not in the lineup, but maybe next Episode 3? Yes, Harrison Mixbus 8 for sure!!! Only other ones I can think of that are general daws, are Magix Music Maker Premium, Samplitude, or Band in the Box maybe even? I would say Ignite by AIR, but it seems to be unkept for years now. Sad because it did what it did very uniquely (quick no rules takes and demo arrangement ideas) especially with AIR keyboards. Cheers Warren!

I use Samplitude pro x suites to record, edit, mixing, and mastering. I have recently been using Mixbus32c7 for mixing and mastering for fun, it has a fill to it or something that I like, kinda hard to explain, I started with Magix Studio.

I worked on most of the SIMS games up until 2006. Always used Digital Performer with Pro Tools! Works everytime!

I use Cakewalk which is free and Reaper that only cost $60. They are both full featured Daws and I haven't found anything that either of them can't do, just different methods to achieve the same results. As a matter of fact, I've never heard a piece of music and even cared what Daw it was produced with. As someone once said, "the best Daw is the one you Know how to use," and that is so very true.

i was using pro tools for many years, It worked just how i was hoping but there was allways this yearly fee, so when i got my macbook air m1 i switched to logic pro and that was just amazing for my work flow. then these is some sweet synths that is only in fl studio so i allso use that, and the thing is I enjoy alot of daws, Keep up the great videos. :D

former hardcore Pro Tools, Logic and Studio One user. Now primarily on Cubase 12 and...very happy. Yes, Cubase has the best flexible daw mixer and the best midi editing composing capabilities. Cubase onstock effects and synths are top notch in these days and absolutely comparable to expensive purchased plugins. I really like the fast creative Samplertrack, Direct Offline Processing and the Control Room e.g. great GUI too. Highly recommend, I must say.

Thrilling introduction, but I‘d never ever change my Logic Pro in favor of any of your mentioned DAWs, neither any other DAW on the market. Nevertheless super overviewon many DAWs. Thanks a lot!

I use a very underrated Daw since 4 years Mulab from Mutools it include a modular system to build own instruments , plugins and containers of vst.

Great video!! I´m glad to see all of these so called "underrated" or "not industry standard" DAWs in this episode. I´m really familiar with most of them, because I think it´s fine to try new territories and then make a decision what is best for me or for other music or producing oriented artists. All of this products have their pluses and minuses so it is really the matter of individual taste 🙂I cannot say which my favourite is... Btw. I know that these videos have theirs limited amount of time, but I missed some of the KEY Features of some of these daws!!! (In Cakewalk is very important "Pro channel" feature and more..., In Waveform really "One window workflow" - with the capability of open implemented universal properties and parameter editing lower part of the window, which changes immediately when you click wherever you want - plugin, clip, loop, tempo map or even the input of the track) etc.... And at the end I want to agree with some of the guys here, that the Harrison Mixbus is reeeally worth to mentioned!!! Some years passed since I give this DAW a try, BUT - even I was not too familiar with the audio and midi editing view (based on Ardour daw)- The SOUND experience was (don´t know why) something like FROM OUT OF THIS UNIVERSE... I bounce between pro tools and studio one, but would be interested in your thoughts on Samplitude

I have old Cubase VST 5.1 sessions I will never be able to use... anyone have a version of this that can open my sessions and stem them for me????

This video really is a great thing. I´m pretty tired of Cubase´s neverending flaws and troubles, and Cakewalk really got me interested.

Nuendo, Cubase and FL studio are my loves in my own personal opinion.

Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio, so many VSTs work on this, routing and bussing so easy. Yet to connect to a Behringer Wing in DAW mode.

Just swung by to drop a like, you can do wonders in any DAW anyway

😊I for sure want to try the cakewalk because I know jaws on my old good interface with XP Pro had scripts for cakewalk, same with the old Win Me.

I tried many DAW's but I always get the results quick in FL Studio. Many recording/real instrument musicians probably would choose PT, Cubase, S1 or Logic but FL suits me best anyway.

You have saved my life! 😅 I have been a Fl Studio user since it was released in 1997 and in recent times I have not stopped receiving criticisms 😅 ... Fl Studio is not suitable for sound design or music compositions for video games or movies bla bla bla.... all the job interviews I see these days, none of them mention Fl studio... plugin companies do not mention Fl Studio on their web sites... and many plugins are not compatible with fl studio at the moment 😮‍💨 sometimes it is frustrating... Your videos always bring something special to the community, thank you very much!! (After writing the bible 🤓🥴 I'm now using Fl Studio and Reaper because of its link with wwise) Thanks!

Cakewalk on PC and Steinberg on Atari were my intros to DAW in the early 90s. I got Digi001 in the late 90s and have been a ProTools user ever since. I do like Garageband for composing esp. on IPad when I travel. I've tried: Logic, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One, Reaper, Reason, FL Studio, etc ... but came back to PT coz it just makes sense, to me. Most were early versions so I may have glossed over some because of early bugs, etc ... probably should try Luna.

Reaper. Works great for me and works on all operating systems and platforms (including Linux and Raspberry Pi’s). Only alternative is Ardour.

Samplitude ProX 7 is hands down the most powerful DAW available for the PC and features object-based editing which is a game changer IMO. Sadly, it doesn't get much exposure in the US but it's worth checking out if you are looking for a high-end DAW to run on a Windows system.

I still play with Pro Tools or Fruity Loops from time to time, but Reaper is the best, super light, not very expensive, you can basically change anything you want, I started using Reaper because of the folders, routing was easier.

That intro was amazing

I stuck with 24 track "all in one" boxes until a relatively short time ago. Then I bought Pro Tools and will likely never use anything else because: 1) I'm used to it now and have no desire to go through another learning curve, and 2) Sending stuff out for mixing is easy because everyone uses it.

I started with something similar, a pair of DA88s and a DM24. It basically acted a lot like one of the all-in-one units since it was all Tascam gear. Eventually ended up with a 1984 setup, a hot-rodded Soundcraft 2400 and Stephens 821b. The console sound is there, edits are a bit of a bear though.

These are good points.

Unrelated to DAWs, but somewhat related to the intro of this video: There's nothing I find funnier than people that put up the Spock hand gesture and say 'May the Force Be With You'. And for the record, I have never seen any of the Star Wars OR Star Trek movies.

I love Bigwig for live recording and vocals, but I really like Renoise for drums and arranging.

I've enjoyed these two videos. I've been using 'sequencers' since Steinberg Pro 16 - then Cubase, Performer (before it got the 'Digital'), Logic on PCs when it was owned by Emagic, Cakewalk when PC support for logic was dropped. Then years in the wilderness with Ardour. Flirted with Live, now use Bitwig. I test audio hardware comparability with DAWs by day and Bitwig feels the most creative. I make tunes with modular synths and traditional instruments and have struggled to find a DAW that is suited to both approaches

Logic for tracking/creating/mixing with forays into Reaper and Waveform.

DAW Wars! Loved the opening. Favourite DAW is akin to a religious war. Love Cakewalk, it's my 2nd favourite after Reaper.

Thank you and Olilie for the review on Bitwig. UIse it under LInux with pipewire, which is low latency Audio (Midi, Video) system on steroids, and don't want switch any more to another system. 🌻

Hey Warren primarly I love to use Studio One Pro / Pro tools / Fl Studio and Cubase. I would love to see this friendly face talking about Fl Studio Producer or Signature series some more, maybe there is a chance to get even short video recording from this guy you have mentioned or someone else. It is noteworthy to mention about Magix who is responsible for Sound Forge Pro, Samplitude Pro and now Sequoia Pro and One next ,Merging Pyramix, MOTU Digital Performer, Waves Soundgrid Studio, Harrison Mixbus, Adobe Audition, n-Track Studio ,ACID Pro, Sound Bridge, NCH MixPad, Ardour, Qtractor...

Digital Performer user since 1996. Its the program I learned midi sequencing and digital recording on. Find it odd MOTU doesn't get mentioned, like at all, when this subject comes up.

My newest computer unfortunately doesn't have the interface array as my older ones did. It has the power and room, but not many hook ups, and limited types. I would need extra hardware items.

Was a long time reaper user but when I bought into the UAD eco system I switched to Luna and I love it :)

Harrison Mixbus32C. It works much like my console and believe it or not it has a "sound" even though it's all code like other DAWs

Harrison Mixbus 8. It´s the best solution for my workflow after having used cubase and logic in the past. I really enjoy working with it.

I am a tecnical support in IT indusrty and ive tried a lot. For me the easiest to learn and is so poweful is Mixcraft Pro currently version 9 for it is literally so super easy to learn.

Nuendo's doppler definitely got my attention
