10 years, over 350k,1 transmission rebuild, all the normal periodic maintenance for a 4.5 " lifted with 33s and 410 gears.I still drive it every day and pull a tool trailer most work days. When it dies I'll build it again , I love the old girl. BTW it's a 98 4door 4wd.

I bought my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport brand new; I'm the only owner. It has just over 150K miles on it. I've had a blown head gasket and the headliner is falling down; otherwise it's been reliable. I've lived in Colorado, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Michigan with it. It's just now starting to show a spot of rust in the driver's side rocker; otherwise it's rust-free. I keep it garaged in the summer, but it's my daily driver all winter every year. Love my XJ.

My stock(ish) '99 2 door (240,000 plus miles) is my daily . . . And it also plows my driveway in the winter. Just normal maintenance on a 20 plus year old vehicle . . . Yes, rust, but again, old vehicle. Two thumbs up

I've owned my 1996 xj for just over 2 years now, and have put on close to 20k miles. The last 4 months, it's been used a lot (around 12k miles), and just a headlight went out. I've spent quite a bit fixing it when i first got it, but mechanically it's very good.

About a year ago I bought a 98 XJ 4.0 4x4 automatic as a daily, I put on 25k miles since then. Great daily, they need a little upkeep but that’s any vehicle over 20 years old. It consistently gets 19.5 mpg in summer and about 17 in winter.

My mom had a 92 jeep cherokee and she absolutely loved that thing shou bought it after a drunk driver totaled her camry that parked on the street when we were living in uptown Minneapolis back in the early to mid 90's. It was an absolute tank in the snow and it was a great daily driver for her. Back in the early 2000's we had to have quite a few repairs done to it like new transfer case new fuel fill hose and a bunch of misc stuff and it was fully loaded too leather seats and power everything. I'm sad that we had to sell it after she moved to Florida in 2008 cause it had pretty low miles on it but it needed too much work and I already had a vehicle that was running just fine so it had to go.

Mine runs amazing. Rust hasn’t gotten to the critical areas of the frame but the rockers need to be replaced. the roof eventually as well. I had it for 8 years now and it on,y died once and it was the cops in the summer.

My 99 has been my daily driver for 16 years. Just now having the mystery misfire issue. It's my 4th Cherokee. I removed the rear seat so there's more room. Everything is in containers and my surfboards lay on top. As for safety, I saw the aftermath of a 90s Cherokee Mercedes head-on collision, and the Cherokee faired way better and the driver wasn't seriously hurt. The Mercedes driver didn't do so well.

You can have the rear springs re-arched as long as they aren't cracked or missing pieces, it's a little cheaper and saves some $.

I'm looking at picking up a 4x4 one soon. Gonna use it for camping and offroading. Id like to find a 4x4 5 speed but that combo is not very plentiful. That makes em hold their value as well. It doesn't need to be a daily cause I already have a TDI.

AW4 automatic is the better trans as it can handle hauling 5000 lbs along with the d35c. The manual only tows 2000lbs. Upgraded leaf springs, rear disc & auxiliary transmission oil cooler are required to tow 5000lb with a factory XJ. Up country package comes with 2 of them. Not the disc brakes. If you have AW4/U.C.P all you need is ZJ brakes to tow 5000lbs. Which makes you able to tow 3500lbs comfortably.

AW4 is also rated for 300HP/300#🦶 which the AMC 4 liter doesnt even get near. So it will last much longer than typical automatics. Probably the manual too lol.

I need that CAD disconnect in my 98 XJ as its a daily runner. I heard bad things though and may go with hub lockers. What do you think? If its computer operated I can make it work off an Arduino or something.

Owners of XJs: the best thing you can do if you live anywhere where road salt is used is to go full-retard with something like fluid film once per year in the fall. Remember, Rust is the real enemy. My wife’s 99 XJ sport and my ex-fleet 96 SE get the annual treatment and there’s almost zero rust on either
