The BEST D.I.Y Turtle Basking Dock ($20!)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Lighting setup:
Zoo Med combo deep dome- amzn.to/3JV8W3w
Zoo Med turtle bulbs- amzn.to/3EsPwlO
Alternative basking HEAT bulb- amzn.to/3JWS8t0
Mercury Vapour bulb (All in one)- amzn.to/3KPN7Uq
Wire bulb housing (For use with Mercury vapour bulb)- amzn.to/3869pmA
Yes really. With a grand total of 20$, 2 materials (eggcrate & zip ties), you can create and WIPE out the pet store competition. I’m looking at you, 50$ exo terra basking dock. But for real, ditch your floating basking dock that your turtle will outgrow in 2 months and try your hand at the best D.I.Y basking dock out there. No complicated or expensive tools, no PVC pipe, Just zipties and a whole lotta eggcrate! In this video i’ll show you step by step how to make a basking dock, and also give tips along the way to keep your turtle happy and healthy
You can find all these materials at your local hardware store.
Dont want an above tank basking dock? Check out my older basking dock (although more complicated!) it fits nicely in your tank. However, the dock featured in this video is like version 2.0. Its seriously better.

Great vid! The correct name for the grid is diffusor panel because it diffuses the light from fluorescent bulbs. Anyone having trouble getting their turt to go into the basking area, drape a t-shirt or other lightweight material over the cage so it feels like a hiding place. Maybe you can remove it after a month or so after turt gets used to it.

I’m trying to build this enclosure for my turtle as we speak but I can’t seem to get the ramp to hold well with zip ties had to use rope instead. I also added extra support under the basking area using a cutting board 😂 if anyone’s having a hard time getting it to be stable for bigger turtles :)

Im popping back in to say thank you for THIS. The only thing is it took me a minute to figure out where to get the eggcrate light cover. BUTTTT I got it ! Made some adjustments to fit my tank and turtle 🐢 she's very happy. Just did it TODAY and already caught her in it !

Hi! im trying to make this too, how do you secure to eggcrate so there's no chance of your turtle knocking it over when it's on the dock?

  • @VincentBeville

You can put the double lamp on top of the egg crate. It will not melt the plastic.

In my case this was not necessary, as my red eared slider is not strong enough to move the dock. The only way the basking dock has a chance of moving is if you knock it in some way and it falls off. other than that it is very sturdy. i made it this way so i can literally pick it up at any moment and move it. the turtle can’t move it though 😜

  • @ThatsSoReptii

    @ThatsSoReptii

    3 жыл бұрын

i havent really tested a weight limit, but you can always make it more secure by doubling up the egg crate for the bottom layer, or making the dock a little smaller so its better supported. there are many things you can do to strengthen it to be able to hold your 2 turtles :)

theyre mostly found in hardware stores such as home depot in the lighting/ ceiling panel section. theres many different names for them but ask for “plastic lighting diffuser” or eggcrate, or plastic square panel lol. best bet is lighting diffuser though

I measure the diameter that I want first and then I'm working out with marker and then I go cut it's a lot easier than that way you don't get no plastic pieces in your turtle tank it also works if you use dog nail clippers to cut your egg crate because it works a lot easier just for my personal experience not trying to be negative just trying to help from what I've done I've made lots of them

Yes, just make sure you cut out a big enough square where the bulbs will be. but yes its pretty heat resistant and its never melted or shown signs of deforming from the heat
