The Best Chrome For Plastic Models - Electroplating Powder Test

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I just discovered this Chrome Electroplate Powder and I feel its one of if not the best chrome I've tested for plastic models so far. It's not as easy as airbrushing it but it's not really difficult to do.

Impressive stuff and a subject I have had extensive discussions with my build partner and other modelers. Not quite mastered the powder application myself. Gloss black base coat is indeed critical no matter what product you use. Then comes the durability and not rubbing off when handled. Outstanding review!!! looks like another metalizer product I gotta try!!! (Now Subscribed)

Just, wow! I'm not a model maker, or much of a hobbyist, (my main hobby has been playing with laser engravers) but I truly do enjoy watching your videos, and have learned much from them. I was especially interested in this video because II recently purchased a DJI drone. As with most drones, it's an extremely bland plastic gray. I wanted to give it a bit more character by giving it a chrome look. I couldn't find anyone who does a chrome "skin" kinda thing, so the search was on. I knew from watching your videos in the past, if ANYBODY knew who did the best chrome product, it would be you; and you certainly did not disappoint! I'm also heartened knowing I can give it a clear coat finish. The odds are high that at some point, I'll crash the thing, (this is my first drone) and I'd prefer the finish stays in tact. SO, my deepest thanks for everything you do, and everything you've taught myself, and so many others! Until nest time, be well

That turned out really nice. It has it's application niche ... Gunpla and such, but would be pretty difficult to work with other stuff that may be a little more delicate, such as semi-tractors or even some aircraft. But, if you can use it for your model that can be buffed, yea, it's really good chrome color. Thanks for vid and review, please keep them coming. Oh, and this is a really good alternate for those folks that can't (or desire not to) use enamels or lacquer. Like you did ... lay down your Stynylrez (acrylic), then this stuff. I got to get the Gloss Black Stynylrez. I have the regular Black which is good, but would like to compare their Gloss Black to Vallejo Gloss Black. Take care ... OB

Great thing is that you could technically get this done with handbrushing (although getting a smooth gloss coat by hand is a little tricky). Best thing is how touch resistant it is once it's been rubbed in, even when it's not fully cured it doesn't suck up fingerprints.

  • @lastshadow9351
    @lastshadow93512 жыл бұрын

That was great! I'm wondering if you could use this powder in an acrylic gloss medium and spray it. I've done some paint processes similar to what you're doing, and it always felt a little fiddly and hit or miss. I really like the results you got, and that chrome has a cold blue grey hue to it. It really makes it look like metal.

So not only could I make a p38 mustang, and make it look like that "iconic" polished look that they had( they discovered by polishing them rather than painting them, they had an increased it top speed by 15 mph") but I could also fix all them house hold applications, where the plastic crome fades over the years. Thank you for enlightens me 👍👍👍👍👍👍

You know how some of these chrome paints take a long time to dry and still while handling the parts during assembly they can start to dull a little (or sometimes a lot)? Well, on a whim, I took a 1/32 scale radiator shell from a 1928 Lincoln that I had airbrushed with Green Stuff some time ago and started handling it to see if the same thing happened (it did), so I took some of this powder and literally mauled it into the chrome. It looked pretty awful…UNTIL I started buffing it with a microfiber cloth. It is now shinier than with just the paint alone! This solves a huge problem! No more kid glove treatment for chrome painted parts! Just sub this stuff on it and go to town; once assembled, buff it out with a tightly wound Qtip and the shine comes right back! Totally awesome…and logical, actually. Use chrome paint and use chrome powder over it. Perfect!

I just kinda dismissed them because I had no idea how to use them. Wow. WOW. BTW, absolutely love the Hobby Mio paints as well. Pre-thinned with included drip tips at a great price point saves me SO much time and they all go on great and the color selection is perfect for me except for purples. They need purples. (Picked up Modo purples from them) Their gloss topcoat is also very nice as well after a few layers.

Paper plates are good for catching excess and for bending and returning to the container. They are also good for working with small parts, since the raised edge stops parts from rolling off. Sometimes it is good to stick the paper plate to the work surface, as resting your hand on the edge can flip the contents out. Before COVID they were a penny. Now they are 6 cents and up and hard to find. I get mine on ebay.

There are similar powders intended for using on nails (fingernails). There are some really cool holographic and color shifting varieties. Makes sense that the same sort of product would be marketed to model makers too. The technique for nails has the powder applied over a UV curing base that sets slightly tacky, usually black.

Really nice review! Since the powder can be applied extremely thin, it can have minimum impact on the smoothness of the underneath surface. That's why powder compared to chrome paint is better for having an extremely clear mirror image. However, this feature also brings two issues 1) Since the powder layer is so thin, the shine is limited. The mirror image is clear but dark. In this regard, Molotow is a winner in terms of shine. 2) The product is hazardous in a home application. As the particles are ground so fine, once inhaled, it is difficult for the body to excrete. In addition, since the product is in powder form, once the box is opened, particles start to release into the air. This means the product will continuously chrome your lung when you use it. That's one of the reasons why these products are not so popular. Either the product is baned or the degree of fineness is regulated. In this regard, the paint may be safer to use.

Ah! Just found this after watching your mica powders video. Have you tried applying these with a flat silicon brush or an eye shadow applicator instead of with a brush and buffing? At least on nails, using a silicon tool or eyeshadow applicator knocks the extra buffing step down and is more feasible on more fragile/smaller objects.

Hello friend, I'm Nilton, from Brazil....I always follow your tests....I would like to know about varnish as a likely sealant that does not make the base lose part of its effect or lose it entirely. That's the big problem with these chromium effects. Best wishes and good 2022 to everyone.

The gloss is higher than the container's cap. It's limitation is not only handling size, but also surface accessibility for buffing. I wonder why there isn't a graphite coating process that facilitates actual chrome plating like the model manufacturer's do.

I wonder how it compares to using graphite powder? The stuff you find in pencil lead but as a powder.

very interesting... i'm new to airbrushing, but have been using powders like this for my nails for years... i use black gel polish as a base, then once it's cured with a UV light, the gel polish has like a sticky feel on it... so you get an applicator like the two you have on the upper right side of your table... and rub HARD the powder in... and you will instantly see the chrome look... we don't even buff it, we just dust it off, and put a clear gel coat over it...

Does the clear gel coat over the chrome powder dull it?

@@michaelscarola50 no... my nails come out looking chrome... it's crazy... but gel nail polish is bad for your nails... but it could work for other stuff i guess... LOL...

Can this be applied on a plastic surface? And how well could it resist to the touch?
