When I was growing up my family grew crickets commercially and sold them over a large area. Our cricket buckets weren't the ones you buy at the bait shops, they were 5 gallon buckets with screen wire stapled over large holes cut in the sides. When we went fishing the way we found the big ones was to literally toss a handful of bugs on the water. If the big ones didn't start popping them pretty quickly we moved on to a different spot. I always had a rig ready with a hook and no weight. When we tossed the crickets in I'd toss my line in the bunch. Never failed to get me hooked up, that topwater action was a blast.
As a teen, a friend and I spent a few years culling a stunted pond full of small bluegill. We would catch hundreds of small ones a day and pitch them in the woods for the raccons. Although earth worms were a bait of choice we were literally at times catching them off bare hooks About five years later we were landing much larger ones, including some hybrids. We also noticed an increase in the bass population. Somehow as kids and from reading countless fishing magazines we had an intuition what needed to be done to turn that pond around. It took a few years but absolutely worked.

Love catching bluegill from a little pond near my house. Recently began using Spam as bait. Cut into small cubes and heat in the microwave for a minute to get rid of excess moisture so it stays on the hook. Also caught a couple of good sized catfish using this bait.

Something I learned to use for brim and sunfish several years ago is using a tiny piece of one of my old bass worms and put it on a small hook. I forgot my red worms and needed to catch some brim for catfish bait. And now I rarely ever buy live worms to catch brim as long as the sun's out cause that worked so well. No sinker tiny little hook and little piece of any color rubber worm, it works like a charm

The gulp worms work great. I've been using them for over a year and I catch a lot of bluegill. I normally use a #12 hook (I fly fish) with a tiny split shot on 4lb line. Rarely a cork. Bigger the worm can lead to a bigger fish. Biggest fish I caught was about a 2lb bass lol...huge for that #12 hook.

So much fun catching bluegills!!! I've been getting tons of them lately (in the 6 - 9" range, looking for a 10") just throwing a crappie magnet grub on a 1/32 oz jig at my local ponds. I use the Gulp scented products (minnows or tipping the jig with a crappie nibble) when the bite is slow (cold water and middle of the summer) and they work great but right now here in NC the bite is on and they are very aggressive, hitting the jig as soon as it hits the water. I’ll be damn he’s using the Xfinity speed stick, the exact same rod that I was using catching all the turtles with that bait…wth
Did he show where on the set up he put the bobber and split shot?

Usually I set the bobber at about 2 feet from the hook but sometimes you gotta figure out if they want it at a different t depth. The split shot I usually put a foot from the hook so you can go to a foot deep with bobber.
Use a barbless hook. Won't catch less fish.

They sure are bud
Try bacon rind, the white part. How do you people not know about that? Beats ANY thing for bluegill or other panfish. ANYTHING. You won't use anything else after you try it.
A bare hook often works...
