I believe “Surviving Compton”, a story about the singer Michel'le who ran with N.W.A and “Roxanne Roxanne”, a story about one of the first female MCs in the rap game, Roxanne Shante, are some honorable mentions.
The Jacksons: An American Dream is a classic movie now.

@@kamsismith I don’t even consider her portrayals in What’s Love and Malcolm X as roles where she just “played someone’s mother.” She portrayed women who happened to be mothers. Especially her portrayal of Tina Turner…she was layered. That’s not even the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of those roles. Same with her portrayal of Coretta Scott King…I can only think of a few roles in her catalog where the focus is her portrayal as a mother. Even in her current show 911, her character is a mother, but it’s not the focus. Jennifer Lewis’ has more roles that align more with that narrative IMO, which is why she has the nickname (The Black Mother of Hollywood)
