I appreciated hearing your comments regarding comparing what is spent on a phone without much thought vs what is spent on a leather Bible as a couple days I hoped to buy a new leather Bible and was feeling slightly queasy spending $100.00 but considering it’s true value compared to a phone, I feel more at peace. Thank you.

    Good question. I believe Millard Erickson's "Christian Theology" would be a good systematic theology from the Baptist perspective. I've used it a couple times over the years, so I am not super familiar with it. But I've heard it is good. And I think he inserts the Baptist perspective. But, be sure to read the reviews and preview it if possible. Here's the link, amzn.to/3jqgAZd

Stuart's How to Read The Bible for All Its Worth it lead me to look for the minimum tools (a. good translation, b. Bible dictionary, c. commentaries). By any chance have you read The Complete Jewish Study Bible and Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible (2019 Feb). Would you consider this as a good starting point?

    @@ChristopherLScott okay so, I am trying to get educated on the stuff again. I have been a Christian since 98 but since then I have gone through some stuff that I obviously caused LOL I unfortunately blamed God for it because he didn’t stop me from making The dumb decisions that I made. So anyway to fast forward to today one verse that I have noticed is missing in a lot of Bibles is Acts 8:37 (I read the king James version) Now, I understood until recently that the king James version was supposedly the most accurate version. Now I am questioning that. I am also realizing or maybe remembering that all of these Bible translations are translated by man and with the resources that we have today and potential access to the dead sea scrolls I may be just a tad bit off base; which is what i am trying to get nailed down. Any in-site to this would be great. Thank you in advance.

    @@zalleywaalley8227 That is a good question. The KJV used what is called the "textus receptus"for the NT. However, since the KJV was translated and published in 1611 many more New Testament manuscripts have been found. Literally thousands of manuscripts have been found since them. Some of them are older and closer to the original writings of the apostles. So, as a result some of the newer translations like the NASB, NIV, NLT, ESV, etc. decided to make their textual decisions based on the older and more reliable manuscripts that the translators of the KJV did not have access too. I'll post a good article in the comments you might find helpful. Thanks for asking. Good question.

    LOL. Most people would NOT like Gen. 1:1- if it was translated LITERALLY ( as the Hebrew reads). Question: -Where can I find a commentary that explains the historical background of the events of the Bible? -I know it can be an endless topic, but............ is there a book that tell that a Greek word means ( even painting a picture of the action)? ( Too often I find that most lexicons are just listing words that seem to not always seem to go together.) -Is it possible to find a Bible commentary that does not have a CLEAR bias?

  • @ChristopherLScott

    @ChristopherLScott

    For Greek words, I encourage you to look for AT Robertson's "Word Pictures of the New Testament" and MR Vincent's "Word Studies of the NT." I think both of those will provide what you are looking for. In my personal opinion, I find that the New American Standard Bible is free of bias since it is published by a "foundation" and not a "book publisher." Hope that helps.

    The Swindoll Study Bible is great as well! The Bible charts he has at the beginning of each book of the Bible are a fantastic resource. There also is a great article in the back about "How to do an inductive Bible study." However, the notes in the Swindoll Study Bible are minimal, but that was part of his desire for the people to "read smooth" and not be "cluttered" with footnotes. Hope that helps!

    @@kevincf77 Yes, David Jeremiah Study Bible is very good as well. It has more footnotes than the Swindoll Study Bible. David Jeremiah and Charles Swindoll both graduated from the same seminary (Dallas Theological Seminary), so many of the notes will follow a similar interpretation pattern.
