    As a Christian we seem to accumulate Bibles. But the first one I bought for myself was NIV Student Bible. And its still my favorite. I bought a one volume NIV commentary to go with it. At the time it was perfect. But recently I also got The Layman's Bible commentary which is a set of 12 especially for those of us who are not ministers. I'm the leader of one of our churches Bible study grouos so I felt I needed something in more depth. Our minister is sick at the moment her lay people are being called apon to do more of the Sunday services as well. So having some good quality commentaries helos a lot.

    So I need an opinion. I have a holman full color, westminster study bible and a Nelson study bible. I want to read the commentaries/notes all together one chapter at a time(one old and one new testament a sitting) Does this sound like to much? I personally feel like I'm trying to eat an elephant like a owl eats a tootsie pop.(3 licks) I did this year's read threw of the bible so I wanted study and read the holman full color( kjv) but my mom gave me the Nelson which I heard is super good but it's nkjv,and I just got the westminster study( kjv) on accident but I really like it so far. Should I do one at a time or just keep on trucking'? I know I'm kinda answering my own question but I want to know how you'd go about it.

    Hey Faith, I was wondering if perhaps you could do a video on sound doctrine? I’m a new Christian who has loved everything about Bible study, so much so that I want my life to be filled with books, movies, and music that help me learn as much as I possibly can. I recently really enjoyed the movie War Room and read the book but than saw online that she doesn’t teach sound doctrine. I also really enjoyed a few other people that I also saw online don’t teach sound doctrine. I have been telling others about the things I’ve learned. I’m now worried that my knowledge isn’t sound. Could you suggest some studies in this area? Books etc? Thank you for taking the time to read this comment.

    I do the same thing! eBay is good and discount books websites like that! Seminary is drawing to a close- which i think I am ready for- KINDOF! I’ll miss the lectures but not the papers/assignments. In a month, I should be done! I have 8 more big assignments left and a couple more weeks of lectures- thanks for asking and checking in! I feel so loved! Things have gotten better, my husband quit his part time job, so he can be home more, he was ALWAYS working! Now it’s less pressure on me to do all the things, which is nice! KZread is turning more and more into a full time gig, so we are just changing up our system a bit so I can get more sleep! So, all that to say, I am feeling grateful! How are you? How is everything?

But the company that prepares our W2s really messed up, which slows things down for getting my taxes filed. But I can't dwell on it or else I get too stressed and I'm trying to be better at relying on God anyway. And this is a very good situation to test that lol. Oh I forgot to check ebay! Thank you!

    Faith, what's Calvin and Reformed?

  • @HowtoFaithALife

    @HowtoFaithALife

    3 жыл бұрын

    So I try to avoid talking about denominational differences at all costs because I think we should be United as Christians, but basically John Calvin and the phrase “reformed” refer to a conservative branch of presbyterians... we really don’t have much different theology than most baptists but I was totally weirded out when I started looking into the reformed faith (I grew up baptist) and then I fell in love with studying theology and joined a reform church and college etc. anyways, all that to say, that is my denomination preferences coming out! I’m curious, what denomination are you? I was born into the Catholic tradition, then baptist, then my mom married a Methodist, who used to be a Pentecostal, and now I’m reformed Presbyterian! Lol, I’ve been all over the map!

    @@HowtoFaithALife excellent explanation! I completely understand about denominations et al. I was born into a Methodist Family, we then went to a Conservative Baptist to Fundamental Baptist and now I worship and serve at a non-denominational. The 'legalism' in the fundamental area didn't satisfy and felt it was legalism without Biblical reference. Just man inventing tules and trying to make Scripture uphold their rules. Thank you for answering so promptly. One more question and if you have a video to answer with that's great. Is 'praying the Scripture' reality or a fad?

  • @HowtoFaithALife

    @HowtoFaithALife

    Praying scripture is almost like a classic practice that is becoming cool again. Like the Psalms are prayer/songs written down. But, the thing about praying scripture is that it could easily be manipulated and used and abused, if you're using scripture not how it was intended to be used... I've made two videos on specific passages of scripture people take out of context and use/abuse, I'll link those below. But basically, it can be a really helpful practice if you struggle with WHAT to pray. I mention and give tips/talk about praying scripture in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kW1tm9mrmc3Qips.html

    Random thing to point out but Spurgeon’s writings are not “old English”, old English is closer to German than modern English and is unreadable by many who read/speak english. Spurgeon is actually writing in modern English, while he may use different words than we would he is using the same language. Not saying any of this to be rude, I just wanted to point out the difference.

    It seems like you have a whole lot of material to cover, Faith, and a very short time to cover it in. In short, you are rushing. I am significantly hearing impaired now in my old age, and although I can get many of your main points, which you have in writing on the screen, I can't get all of what you are saying. When it comes to Bible study tools to help you understand the Bible, I feel that it is something that can be overdone, with too many tools, and too many authors and experts telling you what to think and believe. At some point, you just have to read Scripture itself and let it speak to you directly. I liked your point that you don't have to accept or believe everything you read in these commentaries - but they are food for thought, nonetheless.

Sounds like u didn't take Greek or Hebrew in seminary (I could be wrong)...if not, it can help u understand textual criticism a lot better. I got 1st seminary degree in 69...so our studies would be quite different.

    I wish I could find more NON Calvinistic resources, especially commentaries and no I’m NOT an Armenian either or universalist or anything. I believe in eternal security and that Jesus died for everyone but that doesn’t mean that everyone gets saved. But I believe that the Bible is clear that Jesus died for everyone, so a universal atonement but NOT universalism. I also don’t believe that means that we get any credit for our salvation. If someone gives you a free gift and you take it doesn’t mean you get any credit for taking it, it was still a free gift. If someone pays your debt and you let them (accept it) who gets the credit? They do. Know what I mean?
