It’s no secret if you’ve watched some of my past Character design videos, that I’m a huge fan of the works of Hideki Kamiya. Devil May Cry’s Dante is one of the most iconic action game characters ever, so his inclusion in the Best Design series was obvious. Today we’re here to talk about another character of Kamiya’s, one that was created after he left Capcom and Dante behind in 2006.
Forming Seeds Inc. Which would eventually become Platinum Games, Kamiya wasn’t ready to bow out of the Action Game genre. 2009 saw the release of Bayonetta, a series which borrowed a lot of its DNA from Devil May Cry via its settings, enemies, characters and gameplay.
However, Kamiya didn’t want to re-tread the exact same ground, feeling in particular that he had done all that he could with male protagonists. Thus, Bayonetta was born. The Umbra Witch’s namesake was inspired by a Bayonet, implying that there was ‘more to her than meets the eye’ in a similar fashion to this traditional weapon of war.
Kamiya worked with character designer Mari Shimazaki over a full calendar year to create a new character, installing three traits that he thought were critical:
1. She had to be a female lead.
2. She was a ‘modern’ Witch.
3. She had to use four guns.
Hundreds of design concepts were developed for Bayonetta, with an astounding number of differences in style. Some are high fashion, looking like they came off a London Fashion Week catwalk, whereas others appear like Devil May Cry/Darkstalker hybrids. Sketches by concept artist Wesley Burt also stand out especially, with a design that looks like it’d fit right in amongst the Forbidden West.
Eventually, longer limbs became a sticking point of the character that Kamiya loved, along with a black colour scheme. Kamiya requested that Glasses should be added to the final design to add a greater sense of mystery and intelligence, though Shizamaki thought he may have possibly just had a preference towards women with Glasses.
In most cases, I’d say that sexualisation of video game characters is completely unnecessary. But whether it was intentional or not Bayonetta feels like the best-case example of this being done right. Embracing her sexuality in the most empowering of fashions and owning her campy world with confidence, charm and skill, owning each and every scene with killer looks and a sassy British attitude.
There’s a reason this character is so beloved and that’s down to her fantastic characterisation and one of the best character designs from the past two decades.
Today we’ll look at how the design developed across the series and decide where it hit its highest point.

Fun fact: When designing the Hero of Hyrule costume for Bayonetta they originally had a white undershirt covering up her cleavage, thinking Nintendo would like it. However, it was the opposite. Nintendo requested it be removed because it did not fit the character, which shocked them all. They also encountered a similar situation when deciding on how to make her Wicked Weave attacks more unique with the Peach and Daisy costumes, but Nintendo suggested they use Bowser.

Many gamers have the image of a traditional western conservative company in Nintendo (likely coming from the time they censored games on SNES, before ESRB was created, and the Wii casual friendly marketing) but the reality is far different, Nintendo focuses on family friendly games because thats what they do best, thats what brings them business, but of course they want ALL kind of content on their systems, including M rated games, they don't hate them or anything, when it came to the release of their first HD console they supported Bayonetta because its a good game in a genre they normally had zero presence, but they don't actually give a shit about the character as long as its fun and well made 🤭 Bayonetta helps them rebuild their image from "lol Nintendo is kiddy" to Nintendo is for everyone

I honestly do not like Bayo 2’s default outfit. I feel in love with Bayo back in 09, and haven’t enjoyed her design since the release of the Bayo 3 trailers. I bemoan the huge chunk of sexuality lost to the new “Bayonetta” (read “Cereza”) but her design going back to very long hair is a much welcomed one. I have never liked the pixie cut and my wife and I have very long hair, so I have to admit I’m biased.

I absolutely love her Medieval Witch outfit for many reasons! It is the “prototype” for her modern design, with the updo hair hidden underneath a hood and the witchy symbolism woven throughout- it feels exactly how the same box art Bayonetta would have dressed 500 years ago and why she dresses that way today albeit modernized for the everyday witch. If you compare that particular outfit to what the other Umbra Witches were wearing during that time- (that includes Jeanne, the Elder, the Apprentices, and even Rosa!) she appears as part of their clan, but not quite. The other witches have more stylish and detailed costumes, symbolizing their ranks among the Umbran Clan, and all made of nice materials. And while Bayonetta’s outfit does keep in theme, upon closer inspection the material is frayed and tattered at the ends and appears to be well-worn or secondhand. Perhaps she had to scavenge around for scraps of clothing as she was the black sheep of the clan, yet still wanted something somewhat fashionable to fit in with her peers (but to no avail.) This is very evident when you look at Bayonetta and Jeanne’s designs during the Battle for the Umbra Throne fight. You can even compare her toy cat Cheshire- he was made from scraps and cloth by Rosa who did the best she could to provide her outcast daughter with a toy like the other children, and Jeanne had a professionally made cat toy named Charles (whose name I believe is a reference to Charles Dodgson, the author of Alice in Wonderland.) The last detail is her butterfly mask, which is a very big motif for the character. Her mother Rosa appears to have a matching pair with her, and most of not all of the Umbran Witches have glasses or a facial mask of sorts, to hide their identities and at the same time embrace their identity as witches. I adore the costume design and details of this game and I love how they are still talked about!!!

Note about her hair: Pagan witches in particular used to believe that hair was a source of a witches magic and often grown out as a sign of womanhood. Some other cultures also viewed hair in the same light, as a form of connection into the physical world. Other cultures believed women's pubic hair could be used within voodoo rituals. This can probably be seen best in all of her hair down designs, where it's LONG as hell. And with her cutting her hair in Bayo 2 seems like a sign of maturity

Bayo 1 has the best design in my opinion . It’s the most high fashion of the three and far more *sculpted* . The beehive is a very very niche hairstyle and seeing it used in a game from 2009 is crazy . The main kicker for me is the darkness that it has , the other two are so light hearted and lack the edge the first one has . Bayonetta kinda lost the darkness for me with the 2nd game , that part of her character seemed to vanish . The red in her design pops out against the greys of the environment . It’s just avant-garde as hell .

I think it's hard to choose a favourite considering how much meaning went behind every single design element that makes up who Bayonetta is as a character and how she ties into the games narrative. But initially before I watched the video I actually would've went with the Bayo 2 design but that was mainly bc I was only introduced to her when the second game was coming and that was also her default costume for Smash 4 and Ultimate.

Bayo 2 has my personal favorite design, the sharper look feels sleeker and the blue feels extremely powerful and more mature. Maybe it was because it was my first time seeing her, but the accessories and guns caught my eye more than the first. Not to mention the small ruffles on her gloves and collar, slightly reminiscent of old English styles. Not to mention how much the blues contrasted from the dark red color scheme of inferno, my favorite part of the game. I’m so excited for Bayo 3, the colors and design of the whole game seem so much sharper and geometric, her design in this may not be my favorite, it has elements that are extremely exciting to see, a new style on her.

Her original design is absolutely gorgeous, but Bayonetta 2’s design truly speaks to the character herself. If we think about it, in Bayonetta 1, she was in a lake for 500 years and her outfit is therefore a “default” umbra witch costume, which is why Jeanne’s white one is an exact replica. Come Bayonetta 2, she finally takes the time to customise herself, to show the world who she truly is with her memories. That is what makes the sequel design so special. THIS is Bayonetta.

Those are obviously not what every Umbra witch wore, the Umbran witches wore more cloth like hair woven clothes compared Bayo's default, her real 500 yo outfit is literally called OLD. Jeanne's umbran uniform is just to show that she's Bayonetta's other half, that and they're the last of their kind - and Bayonetta being the inheritor of the left eye, Bayonetta is the leader of the Umbra. (She's proven she's the stronger Umbra countless times) They had their fight interrupted the first time they sparred for the title, it was more a motivation on Jeanne's part as she was the rightful heir to the clan, but the original fight was interrupted by the angels attacking as they began the witch hunts. It was pretty much an overlooked motive of Jeanne in the first game, to fight Bayonetta at her strongest, to know the outcome of their sparring match 500 years ago.

I feel like Bayo 2's pixie cut just fits her character so much, though I do love the red, gold, and black color scheme of the first game. And her first outing is instantly recognizable with a striking silhouette, thanks to her tall hairstyle. Bayo 3's design is the most fun to look at though imo. It's a lot busier than her other designs with a lot of frills and loose parts. Fits more in line with her dancing background as she looks like she's wearing a tutu. I also love how the braids continue all the way to the back and it makes a huge bow, it's a really neat touch. And I love that the gold and red is back, with some purple to make her stand out that much more. So, I feel like 1 is the most recognizable and iconic, 2's best captures her personality, and 3's expands on her extravagant behavior and dancing. I love how different they are from each other, and they're all top-tier chatacter designs in my eyes.

If it wasn’t for the release of Bayonetta 3’s new design, I would’ve 100% agree with you on her best design (personal taste) being the Bayonetta 1’s. But I gotta say 3 has really been growing on me and I like it as much, if not more than the 1st. The first thing that caught my eye was her new hairstyle and how it gives her an innocent yet, sexy look. I love the red hair bands curling down with her hair. And the high callers compliments her pronounce, smooth jawline. It all frames her face very nicely. Then the big braids/bow coming down behind her hips along with her skirt gives her a more curvy look. And of course I love the mix of purple, gold and red here. Further more and to reiterate myself a bit, I’m a sucker for girls in double braids, especially if their puffy. And for her to have the bow tide like a braid, well that’s like heaven for me. Okay, I gotta give it to Bayonetta 3 as the favorite design. I just absolutely love it

the thing i absolutely love about her original design in bayonetta 1 and what makes it my favorite design of hers is just how dynamic it is. even from a basic visual standpoint, you can see just how clean her outfit is-all the lines flow into each other (especially important considering her entire suit is supposed to be made of her hair) without any clashing elements. its simplicity gives it a sense of boldness, the outfit perfectly encapsulates bayonetta's aura of class and elegance. the level of character to the original design goes even deeper though, her beehive hairstyle is a detail as you mentioned is meant to parallel the stereotypical witch's hat with modernized, high fashion sensibilities. you may have missed the connection between her concept as a witch and her signature set of weapons being named after a traditional folk ballad. the guns' individual names come from herbs mentioned in the song, which ties into the association with witches' magic to herbs. rosemary, one of her guns' names, is even referenced within the plot-both its status as a demon repellent and also a symbol for bayonetta's journey to uncover her past. bayonetta's design told even more of her story in the first game, as her black and red color palette paralleled her with jeanne-her rival in the plot. jeanne also wears red and black but her palette is an invert to bayonetta's, hinting at their closeness with each other while fitting the strange circumstances that pit them against each other. during the final portions of the game where bayonetta and jeanne connect over the past and start to work together, jeanne even changes into the same outfit as bayonetta's (albeit in her contrasting white hair)-visually representing their "sisterhood" as umbra witches. while i do love the bayonetta 2 designs visually, i cant help but miss the symbolism and character of the original design. its sad to see most of that thought process and design philosophy didn't come through to bayonetta 2. bayonetta moved onto blue as her main color while jeanne didn't get a blue suit to match too, breaking apart the visual cohesion that symbolized so much about their relationship. her signature weapons were named after a 60s song, their individual names coming from various unrelated musical terms completely secularized from witchcraft. her hairstyle was changed to a basic pixie cut. again i have nothing on the bayonetta 2 design, it's a great design in its own right-it's just that the original bayonetta design is too perfect. it's so perfect that i'm not sure how bayonetta's design could have been changed up and evolved or otherwise improved without sacrificing the symbolic details that flesh out her concept as a modern witch. while i'm a bit disappointed in the overall aesthetic of bayonetta 3 so far from what i've seen, bayonetta's design herself looks quite interesting in that game and touches upon the symbolic aspects i was missing from the 2's design with the braids, ribbons, and fairy-tale style ensemble. can't wait to see more of her!

Between the first two, I prefer the first look. Red suits her better (though she looks great in blue as well) also her hair was intentionally designed to resemble a witch hat! I love that detail! Still the second outfit resembling robes of some kind is a gorgeous addition in my opinion. As for the third, I want to say it’s my favorite out of them all but that’s just because I am biased towards the gothic lolita style so it’s more a me thing and less a Bayonetta thing. I do definitely think it’s the perfect outfit for the new game considering the previous two were connected to her past.

What I also really love about her original design is that her hair gave her in-game model very dynamic element - very flowing and flexible, a bit like the cape of Alucard in Castlevania SOTN. It's just fun to look at. Her "old" costume in Bayo 1 has her hair open, similar to Jeanne in Bayo 2. I don't mind short hairstyles, but she loses some of her esoteric, witch - like appeal - she looks more like a regular human now, less mysterious, and less intimidating. Her Naruto Run animation when equipped with the dual swords also looks hilariously out of place. Bayo 2 just looks too cold for my taste. Thankfully the witch apprentice outfit looks super cool to make up for it, and I love the Bayo 2 iteration of Jeanne a lot. Absolutely love her design in 3. She looks more warm, with the rounder face, the bigger glasses and the thick braids, both more mature and a bit more playful at the same time. Great video!

I think the witch hat look of the first design is cool but 2’s design is way more modern and even cooler in my opinion. I’m also loving the pigtails wrapping around her into a bow on her back in the new design. I just hope 3 has costumes of the first 2 designs like 2 had with 1’s outfit. Then everybody wins

I love all of her designs and its part of Bayonetta's character. The first game called 'A witch with no memory' is an iconic look. With the beehive hairstyle and the hints of red with bright gold metallics combined with the sleek catsuit. In her sequel Bayonetta took on a more modern trendy style as to probably fit in with the current time frame. She keeps the catsuit but replaces the hair like wings into a shawl like over piece. The pallete also became more cool toned with the gold and red being swapped to silver and blue. And with her upcoming third game people are speculating theories but the main idea is behind her design. The poofy sleeved dress, pigtail braids, the rounder framed glasses, the pink eyeshdows and her more fun form of dancing in her summons are callbacks to her when she was a kid. And theories are going wild with it. I love all of her desings because the 1st one is a kick off to her iconic style the sequel gives it a mordern twist and the third is a call back to her childhood look.

I personally prefer the Bayonetta from part 1, it doesn't get more iconic than that! I like the elegant, gilded style and the cool hair tied together. Maybe it's because red is my favorite color. I don't know. Anyway, I think that the first design is unbeatable! But I also find the design of the 3rd game interesting. A mix of old-fashioned and over-the-top modern. Even the skirt fits, as if it was made for that purpose. Well, despite everything, I find the outfit of the first part the very best! I personally didn't find her design change in the 2nd part of the series particularly fitting or appealing. Just the fact that her red signature hairbands are missing.... I mean yes: The new Outfit does look very modern and edgy, but I think the whole edgy style doesn't stand up as much as the other two versions. Despite all that, a really well done video! Underated channel! 10/10!. Greetings from Germany: Lars Ps.: (my grammar isn't the best, hope it is all somehow understandable. Please do not be too strict xD)

I'm on the same side as well, the first design just clean and easy to the eyes, eventho it's highly detailed it's still gives a clean silhouette with the long hair sleeve and long ribbons adding to the movement, the second one I don't really fancy the cape but the body suit is reminiscent of the first one, the third one i think I need to see it with my own eyes in the game before judging. Kinda wish you talked about the additional wardrobe for the first and second game as well.

  • @arthurpprado
    @arthurpprado Жыл бұрын

One thing that bothers me a bit in the second outfit but the first and third do well is showing where and how her hair connects to her suit. The short hair does look good on her but it feels strange not to see any hair bridging into the suit. Even more so when she uses her wicked weaves and it seems like just the hair at the nape of her neck is what makes the suit while the rest of it is just for show. As for the third outfit being more loose and puffy, I think it makes sense because it relies less on outright exposing the shape of her body and more on being tastefully sexy

Having now played Bayonetta 3 and spent some time with the new design, for me the order is Bayonetta 1, 3, and then 2 from favourite to least. Having said that, they're all absolutely incredible, not a bad design in the bunch and each one is very memorable.

  • @telekinesticman

I do hope there is something funky going on with this new Bayonetta design for 3, because while it looks really cool, something feels off with her. I'm not crazy on how much younger she looks, acts and dresses, it makes her feel a bit less unique among other female videogame characters since I always saw Bayonetta as a more mature-looking woman (ignoring the fact that duh, she's over 500 years old). And her glasses!! They're fine but...I really really really miss her old, slim glasses, they're so iconic to me that changing them feels weird!! Also not over her voice actress changing, it bothers me so much in the trailer when she says the word "dance" but not with the same accent inflection as her original voice, it throws me off. Such a minor thing to complain about in the grand scheme but damn it irritates me. Obviously still very excited for 3, I've been waiting for so long to see anything from it since I screamed like a monkey when it was announced in 2017. I like the look of that new demon controlling combat stuff, I just hope it doesn't overshadow the core close-quarters melee combat. DMC5 spoiled me big-time so I want Bayonetta 3 to at least *try* to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with its older brother series, especially considering I got into DMC because of Bayonetta. EDIT: Also I think I'm on Team Bayo 2 for favourite design. I still love her original look, especially when you use it in Bayo 2 with the more vibrant colour palette (Bayo 1 is kinda ugly), but there's just something about the design in 2 that really clicks for me and captures more of her cheeky energy. Also the blue motif is gorgeous so that's definitely a big part of it for me.

as a mexican i may be super biased but i love her costume in Bayonetta 3 the best because its very mexican looking to me with the braided ribboned hair and the dress with floral designs it almost looks like a modern and more youthful and girly version of a huipil similar to little Cereza in the first game. i’ve always thought bayo was a mexican witch who was raised in Vigrid with the rest of the witches. we know that witches come from all over the world based on the accessories lore. and her name is Cereza and she’s called “Cerezita”. very mexican if you ask me lol sure you could argue that she’s spanish but the hairstyle is VERY mexican. oh and her mom’s name is Rosa!

Aesir, the God who gave the Eyes of the World to Humanity

as amazing and iconic as the first game's design is, i am a gigantic sucker for women with short hair, so bayo2 is my favourite. the pixie cut really fits her character bayo3 is also an amazing design that clearly manages to portray a younger, "straight out of highschool" sort of person with many of its aspects, including even the dancing she performs to do her summons, which is noticeably clumsier(?) compared to her dancing in the first two games. i dont know how to describe it, but theres a great deal of noticeable differences between the end credits dancing in the first game and what we were shown in the trailer. either way i love bayonetta and all of her designs. i am very excited for the third game and i really wonder if platinum is gonna throw another curveball at us and let us play as this young cereza for a little bit until something happens and she needs saving from our original timeline bayo from 1 and 2. who knows, maybe our bayonetta will also have a whole new design for 3 as well! anyway great video! this contained a bunch more trivia than other videos ive seen on the subject, and i was very surprised to see you touch upon the wonderful101 too. will you ever do a video on jeanne or the rest of the cast as a whole?

Personally I do not believe that Bayonetta (cereza) in Bayonetta 3 is the younger version of her being cereza. In the first game she was taken back to her own time. And seeing how strong she is in this game and the control over her internal demons this could not be younger cereza. Cereza (Bayonetta) was taken back to her own time and she grew up into Bayonetta, and seeing through Bayonetta (cerezas) memories in the first game this most likely isn't it. Even if it was though that implies, that most likely we really messed up the timeline in the first two games which is unlikely. So this Bayonetta (cereza) is probably based off a magical girl or an idol. It seem, as if the game takes place In Japan, and her skirt and the puffy sleeves are probably idol inspired and inspired off of cereza, and with the her style changing throughout the game this is probably just a reference or she wanted a new haircut¯\_༼ •́ ͜ʖ •̀ ༽_/¯

Her design for the third game, tho, with the more human proportions of her legs and head, looking less like a stick bug or an alien from Kamino, and her overall hair and dress made me actually interested on things to come. So that would be 3 for me.
