For me the pinnacle of this game is sailing back to your base on a boat full of loot. That's why I believe that having ur base built next to the ocean is a must, so that u can incorporate a dock later on. There's no better feeling than docking on ur sweet base ready to unload all that juicy loot!

I used to do hill top fortresses until I got sick of trying to cart a longship of ore up the hill. . . faster to just make 12 runs. . . LOL.

Goddamn metal too heavy to do anything else if you're on vanilla settings--no WAY you wanna have to lug a cart, useful as they can be situationally, full to the brim with metals even a SHORT distance inland, they just become agonizingly difficult to get from point A to point B on all but the most perfectly flattened of roads!

Early game - no argument. Midgame - I build a Plains "outpost" to grow flax and barley and maybe raid fulings, but I would not call it a "base" because I do not make it comfortable nor do I sleep there. Endgame - same. I build a Mistlands "outpost" to grow jotunpuffs, and I would not combine it with the Midgame. Portal in, harvest and plant and get out. Now, if I were crazy enough to play "no portal" . . .

Remote Farming: As others have said . . . remote farming is the best. With just a portal accessing the farm you never get raid spawns at the farm (with the exception of Wolves in the plains). Early game I make a remote farm by the boss stones since you need to visit there anyway so one portal covers both needs. A simple perimeter fence will prevent any mobs that happen to wander over from interfering. Midgame a plains farm works great. I use 2x1 stone pieces as a wall foundation and put a stakewall on top. Enemies can't see over the wall so any wandering mobs won't detect you unless you are making a ton of noise for some reason. And the layered way can take a lot of damage before breaking if necessary. Late game a small mushroom farm in the mistlands I usually pair up with a sap extractor. Just pop in every so often to harvest and leave.

My favorite mid-game base location is actually inside a large Swamp that borders both a Plains and Mountain. Benefits: 1) Easy iron gathering and processing. Make cart paths with the hoe to the crypts and mountain and plains. 2) Unlimited coal. Base can be close enough to a surtling spawner that they will spawn endlessly while you work or sleep. 3) Safety. I've actually found that the swamp biome is quiet. The monsters don't roam as much as other biomes. You almost never get anyone bothering you. And if you want, you can make elevated bases on on the indestructible trees. It can totally serve as your final late game base also.

I built a base in the swamp once. It was depressing. The ambient lighting is really screwed up in swamp bases.

@@TheBrothergreenwhile I agree with the previous comment, I am with you on this, the devs did an excellent job at making the swamps a foreboding place, so good in fact I spend as little time there as possible 😂

Note that starting islands dont realy spawn any silver on mountains as they are generaly generated on a ground that is to low (still you can get wolf pets). Also you should never build your main base next to ocean, as this allows mobs to swim past your defenses. If you build a main base there are 2 good options: *Top of meadows hill ---- all you have to do is build diches araund the hill and place workbenches to prevent a spawn inside your base circle. 4 wood walls size ditch prevents 99% of mobs from getting in (yeah not bats lol). Then simply build a road with small dock next to ocean. *Meadows/Black forest land sticking out in middle of ocean --- yeah this is expensive to build depending on size and raised ground, but it also allows you to have a ship near and you dont have to pull all metal by roads when you bring it by the boat. Just dont do it in swamp due to a constant rain. As for plains and mist base, i dont recomend you build to much. Just a lot of despawners and a ditch araund the barely. Plants will still grow and mobs will not destroy them if you are not near the plants. If you get a raid from gyarll or something worse, just teleport to main base and do something else.

For the early game base location it is probably worth mentioning that it is best to make sure that your candidate location is on the outside of the island, and not on an inland sea. While I have made inland sea bases work (canal projects, anyone?) it can be quite frustrating to build your boat, set sail, and discover that you are landlocked. Therefore I will often pick a candidate spot, put up a basic camp, and then go on a long walk or two to verify that my prospective seaport does, in fact, have access to the high seas. For midgame I just look for a large, flat chunk of plains near the coast. Any other nearby biomes are gravy. 😃 Not my usual long comment. Short on time this week. I hope you are having fun!

Yeah - Inland seas can be rough. I have had one where there were 3 rivers out but only one navigable by the longship.

@@sociallyferal4237 Yeah, inland sea can be fine, but make sure there are at least 2 usable rivers out on different sides of the lake. Even if you're coastal I recommend that you have good access to at least 2 major directions of travel from your dock so you dont start every trip with a long trip down a looooong bay to get to the open sea. Had that issue in my first world. If there is a problem then keep an eye out for opportunities to dig a canal to get access to a new sea. Places that the land is low enough and the distance short enough that digging a canal through it is viable. I recommend looking at the waves by your prospective location, especially during a storm, so you know what you're going to be dealing with for your buildings and what types of docks are posssible. Cant really build a covered dock where there are big waves etc. Just inside a wide rivermouth is often good since waves dont extend into rivers.

Imo all that really matters is being on a coast so you can bring in metals from different areas. For everything else there's portals. Unless you're also using portals for metals in which case you can build literally anywhere. If not using portals at all then yeah you'd want to build on plains/mistlands.

My favourite base location is in the black forest. If you position your base in the black forest, near a mountain and obviously on the shore it can function as a "mega base" throughout the entire game. You can build a huge forge near the shore so unloading ships and processing iron can be much easier. The proximity of a mountain is important because mining of silver become much easier. You can build a "slide" to you base directly or running back and forth to the base become less time consuming. The very best thing is to have plains biome next to the base too, but don't be so greedy :D Swamps and the mistlands are absoultely terrible and I don't really like the plains either because there are quite tough enemies there and very limited wood resources most of the time. The black forest is a perfect spot for the base because you have almost "unlimited" wood, copper, tin and surtling core (crucial at the beginning of the game) and the proximity of the mountain provides you "unlimited" stone, fur and other valuable materials.

Instead of choosing a base location based off of farming, I built separate farms in each biome (meadows, plains, mistlands) and put a portal in my kitchen dedicated to going to those 3 farms.

Great video for newish players! Well done! After 2500 hrs playing I think mid game base is best in swamp near surtling spawn and importantly a bunch of crypts..... at least building a good size, safe (terrain walls), foundry for efficient iron production..... you need SOOO much iron ALL game after early.... thoughts??

I think I have as many hours as you do. LOL. I like a temporary smelting base in the swamp within the middle of as many crypts as I can get. Surtling spawns are optional (though I would put a portal near if there is a cluster for a coal run). After you have mined the crypts - then you need to move to a new base. So a small secondary base with a road to a coastal dock for when it is time to leave. Nightly mob visits just annoy me too much to put much more in the swamp. . . When sailing the world - I am always on the lookout for a smallish Island to be a main base location, or at least a small plains Island far from anything else I can turn into a wheat farm. At least with portals. I think I would choose something else for no map/no portal mode.

There are 2 acceptable base locations. 1) Plains 2) Medows All other bases are poisoned by ambient mist/murk/whatever that makes your base not usable half the time.
