I recently switched to suspenders before I even noticed you were doing this series on them. So much more comfortable and so much more confidence in where my pants are! Of course everyone “suspender curious” starts with clip ons and graduates to buttons, but even the clip ons have their place helping me get full value out of some older pants that won’t need buttons added before they die. Cheers sir. Great content. And as an added bonus, I get comments all the time on a nice pair of suspenders - people don’t see them very often and even tend to think the nicer dress up ones look “fancy”. Here I am just trying to keep my pants up!

I used the old Carhartt jeans that you used for years. Then they stopped making them in my size. I found a company called “Wild Ass Jeans” that makes pretty much a clone. Same double layers front, same bachelor buttons. I tried them and didn’t miss a beat. Barely can even tell the difference. And they are like 60% the price of what the Carhartt jeans were. Just as an alternative. Scott, you should try them, I think you would find that you really like them.

I've been wearing WildAss jeans for at least 10 years and I love them and can only think of one time a suspender button failed before wearing both layers of knee out first.

I've bought those Bucksaw Logger buttons before from a saw shop in Enumclaw, WA. to put into a new pair of double front Key's. My suspenders are a little stiffer than the ones you wear and have that loop on the left side for a spencer tape. Not long after, I climbed into my friends brand spanking new F-350 Lariat cowboy cruiseamatic and as I sat in the seat I felt something odd on my back. I reached around and there was the tack sticking out of the back of my britches with no button on it just waiting to cut a hole in his new leather seats. I've had several of those come off in a couple years, so I switched brands. I noticed that the tack on that brand is smooth shanked. That is why they fail. I bought some that had serrations for lack of a better term along their length from Duluth Trading Company and when you set those home, they don't pop off. Ever. I think Carhartt makes some like that also. The secret to longevity and duty is not steel content, it's in the shape of that tack so the button innards have something positive to hang onto for dear life once the fat man bends over to pick something up.

I’ve had similar issues where the buttons pop off when getting in and out of cars, or certain chairs, or even squeezing in a a tight space up against a fence or something. For my work pants I ended up just home brewing buttons out of some little bolts and fender washer and lock nuts. Hard to get the leather loops on and off of them, but they outlast the pants I put them in every time, and then I can just unbolt them and put them into the replacement pair. For general day to day wear I actually use the screw type buttons which he dismissed in the video. It’s true they come loose in the wash sometimes, but you can just screw them back in. Once a tack style button comes apart, it’s ruined. More importantly they have never come apart due to use, only in the rotational environment of the washer or dryer.

You are absolutely correct that it's not about the "steel" content. I ran a garment factory and those "steel" buttons and snaps were actually cheaper to buy. High quality garment didn't use them, because they rust. The strength came from the thicker gauge metal. Not because it was steel.

I make reproductions of clasic furniture pieces. Brass, bronze FHWSs are the main fasteners that I work with I use a few iron and zinc-plated to cut threads. for the brass screws. If the initial iron screw, get stripped out - that's life. But the brass and bronze screws are'nt going to face their same problem. Only flat-bladed screws are used for the final assembly.

Love it! I had actually started wearing Welch suspenders on my regular work pants a couple months back, after finding these brad-type bachelor buttons, I'm really glad you decided to show everyone else who might've been hung up on the fact that you can hardly find any pants these days with them pre-installed, on top of having to sacrifice the comfort of a pair of pants someone might already be familiar with. Working folks come in all sorts of sizes and shapes, so it helps to be able to make your own modifications like this. Keep up the good work folks.

I've tried gentle hammering, squeezing with pliers, even pressing them in a vice, but I for the life of me can't get the Bucksaw buttons to set squarely or flared enough to stay together consistently. As much as I hate plastic, the brands that employ a barbed tack and a plastic sleeve have worked the most consistently for me.

I really appreciate your content. As one carpenter to another. 10 years behind you and many similar experiences but I still learn from you everyday. Cheers from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Mr. Wadsworth, I know today's subject are suspender buttons, a subject dear to your heart. And I have seen all your other postings over the years on the merits of jeans and suspenders and how much you like them. I too have tried all these variations of jeans, suspenders, sewed-on buttons, rivet buttons, etc. and completely understand their merits. However... please allow me to comment on the following: In the final analysis of what clothing design solves all the issues faced by an out-of-doors working man in all environments and type of work, I would argue that a well fitted coverall, jumpsuit, etc. is the best. While each design offers its' own pros and cons, I have found that a well fitted coverall offers the best of all solutions. Specifically, a coverall that is worn over a man's tee shirt and underwear- not over street clothes. This style allows complete coverage, i.e., protection and ease of movement of the body no matter how much stretching, crawling, climbing, hanging, jumping, etc. is required. Coveralls also allow comfortable wearing of tool belts without competing with suspender buttons being in the way. Enviably, with suspenders, shirt tails always want to "ride up" and buttons are always digging into the hip bones and small of the back. Caveat: Suspenders I would argue do offer a more attractive appearance and also allow a more user-friendly experience when using a toilet. The one major problem with coveralls is the following: Finding a proper fit is everything. This one problem pretty much explains why most men give up trying to use coveralls. For whatever reason, suppliers the world over just can't seem to solve this dilemma. I get around this by doing my own alterations. But once properly fitted, they solve 95% of the issues the work environment throws at the working man. Thank you and keep up the good work. Signed: A 73 year old carpenter/mechanic/farmer.

I've been wearing suspenders for over two years and love them. Wouldn't go back to a belt, my pants never fall down and I'm not having to my shirt coming untucked either as much

Always carried heavy EDC , even before it was called EDC . Belt only , never worked out very well , added regular suspenders for a while but the metal clips made a lot of little holes in my T shirts and eventually ripped the tops of my pants where they hooked on ( yes even carharts , which I do not like because they wear out three times as fast as wranglers which are one third the price ) . Tried the good professional suspenders like you are talking about and they were the best . One time one strap broke so I removed the broken half and discovered half of a suspender worked great and was much less of a hassle. Now I made a single strap suspender out of 3/4” webbing and nylon buckles ordered on Amazon . Buckle on each end and receiving buckles on small webbing circles that go around my belt.

Just placed an order today suspenders and all I’LL keep you posted mostly for work and if all goes well day to day thanks again for your awesome videos

As someone who’s worn the Welch Bucksaw Buttons for over 10 years I’ve found the absolute best way to install is with a regular pair of slip joint pliers set to the larger opening and squeeze until the handles touch. Hammering I’ve accidentally more than once hit them too hard and they pop open randomly or not take at all

Thank you so much for this video! I started wearing the leather and elastic logger style suspenders to prevent my work pants from creeping down about ten years ago. Being a bit larger than average in the hinder region, I never could wear Carhartt pants, just not enough room.This forced me to purchase and install my own bachelor buttons on the pants that were more comfortable.No trouble at all with that. The trouble I had was never knowing the quality of the buttons until I received them in the mail. About half the brands I tried would show up with the rivet pin made out of aluminum. About the time I was stretched out in some awkward position the aluminum head on the rivet would fold over backward and pull through the waist band of my pants, sending the button flying through the air at whoever was in the vicinity! I never was fortunate enough to come across the Welch brand in my searches, so I quit the suspenders when I wore out the last pair of pants with quality buttons. With this new information thanks to you I can try again. I loved the security and comfort I had with the suspenders! Thanks again Mr. Scott!

Bucksaw button are what I've been using for years. They do fail every once in a while but very infrequently. I like to have some flat metal under the button when pounding the rivet in.

Hey Scott. I injured my back over 30 years ago. I had to switch to suspenders because a belt put pressure on my lower back. But I used the clip-on type. They are not bad, because the pants that I wore didn't have the buttons for suspenders. I didn't know that I could buy Bachelor buttons. I will now order some tonight and them buy the button on suspenders. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🍁

Well i made the switch, thanks to EC and i am hooked. As an ag teacher, I work at the sawmill, in the shop, in the classroom, and at banquets which can all be covered with a dress set and a work set. It is a game changer and they are suprisingly more stylish than i thought they would be. The only problem is that with my beard, i am going to have to start carrying an axe so people know I am not a hipster.

Unfortunately, judging by a lot of social media, axe carrying (if not using correctly) is already part of the hipster uniform. But it seems you actually work for a living so I think you’ll be free of being falsely labeled a hipster :)

Love it! I've been putting bachelor buttons into all my trousers for several years now. I use an ice pick to awl a hole same as you do with a nail. But I have had a few fail if I hammer them together, probably because I lack the finesse you have. What I have had great luck with, and what I recommend to everyone who is new to it, is pressing the buttons together with a bench vice, works a treat and is very controllable.

I've had bachelor buttons rip out of the jeans waistband - ideally there'd be some webbing sewn inside the waistband. I've since gone to trigger clips, that snap onto your belt loops - and I've not had a belt loop rip out yet. Clips are tough on your jeans, just tear 'em up. I have had my wife sew on a folded over bit of webbing on the waistband, on the outside seam of the pants leg. For side-clip/trucker suspenders, that works the best for me. But the trigger clips are my current favorites. -Tom

I'm a big guy and tried wearing suspenders before. The suspenders I found have a clip that clamps onto your wasteband or even better your leather belt. But the clips don't grab the wasteband very well, and the whole reason for using the suspenders was to not need a belt. I grew up here in Eugene seeing loggers in their suspenders all the time. I've searched for pants with buttons on them, and the inexperienced sales people the stores all seem to hire know absolutely nothing. Now I know what the buttons are called and someone who makes and sells those suspenders. Thank you.

Scott, when I first started watching your channel (very early in your KZread career) I was stunned that you wore suspenders. I said to myself; “That makes perfect sense.” I have worn Carhartt for what seems like forever - read that as 45 years on construction then for field work when I moved to Architecture. So, already having the double front loggers, I ordered 2 bags of Carhartt “Batchelor Buttons” and installed them. Here we are all these years later and I’m still wearing the suspenders and although long retired, I also love the suspenders for the comfort they afford me. Thank you Scott it’s only part of what I’ve adopted from the Essential Craftsman over the years.

Still looking for the perfect pair of jeans and suspenders to match that I like the best so these reviews have been very helpful.

So I bought a superior handsaw hoping to collect antique woodworking hand tools. Turned out to be warped and to worn out to use. I guess there's only so much straightening you can do..but one of the fasteners was intriguing. I now think it's a form of bachelor's button. It's beautiful, eagle emblem. I thought I couldn't refurbish the saw for practical use, and I was right, but they button I see now is very useful. My right strap on my Carhartt bibs frayed and broke. I can have some style and respect on my bibs if I fix it with old handsaw button...I see it as a rivett

Great video, you installed those buttons as if you've been doing it since you were a apprentice. If you're suspenders are x backs, the back buttons can be spaced farther apart. Some guys like that. If they are y backs, closer is the rule. Kwik tip, keep a few small zip ties in your tool or lunch box. If by chance you lose a button you can use the tie through the existing hole to finish the day

I wear bibs most of the time these days. But I do love me some jeans with suspenders. Many many videos ago you mentioned suspenders and I was hooked.

I never knew they had a proper name! I was looking for one to replace the broken button on my shorts (the waistband is just snug enough that the plastic button broke in half) but didnt know what to look for other than "rivet buttons" Thanks :D

I have to say... Been fighting pants that wanted to crawl down for a few years. A belt that was either way to tight or wouldn't keep the pants up. Followed your advice about 1-2 months ago, couldn't be happier. I have been dealing with some of the buttons letting go, including the welch ones. Seems random but always nice to have a second backup until I get home and replace the offender. Thanks for. The advise.

I literally was just researching this after coming to the conclusion at 50 years old I like and need to wear suspenders and don't want to buy new or different pants with bachelor buttons so I figured on installing my own. Thanks for the video!

I install a iron-on patch where I intend to place the button for more durable material support. I like these buttons to hold my Mora knife sheath which has a tear dropped slot that the button will slide over and lock on. I usually install these buttons on my carpenter jeans over the long narrow side leg pocket. The sheath slides into the pocket and locks on to the button for a very secure fixed blade carry. Great for overalls as well.🇨🇦

I have used the carhartt buttons to convert the B01 double front pants (carhartt’s last actual good garment) into loggers. I have never had them pull off or loosen. They are exactly the same button (minus the name) that’s used on the waistband on the same pants. I have worn out many pairs of jeans and not one has failed. I have heard from loggers that the bucksaw logger buttons can pull loose after a time. I never used them so it’s second hand information. Maybe you could do a test on some heavy material and see which pulls off the easiest or at all. Excellent video as always and thanks for the information!

Used to be a tree-climber, used suspenders there because the chafing on hip-bones from the belt and climbing harness was pretty bad. Now I'm a plumber, and wear my belt somewhat loose to get the trade required cleavage showing in the back when I bend over. Different tools for different trades.

I enjoy my suspenders but my biggest issue has ALWAYS been with undoing them if I'm in a hurry to use the bathroom.. I've never tried the button types but will give them serious consideration.. Thank you Sir !!

I wore suspenders and pants on the job until I began working in the steel mills and powerhouses, I switched to bibs, & gained the extra pockets, while the watch fob keyhole served to keep my ear plugs handy. I’m retired and can’t recall the last time I wore jeans but I have worn out dozens of bibs (zipper to knee carnartt were my favorite) & liberty was my next choice

I appreciate the wealth of knowledge given on your videos. I've hated belts for years and never considered suspenders, until now. With my personal experience of making plenty of mistakes because I didn't take the time to make sure it was lined up right, my only question about installing these buttons is shouldn't you have the pants on, and the suspenders hanging where they're going to attach to assure you're lining the buttons up correctly ?

Brass bachelor buttons would also be good. Wished you had provided the Amazon link to the Welch bachelor buttons.

I never know what's going to show up on this channel, but it's always been helpful. I keep toying with the idea of suspenders, but haven't made the leap yet.

When I retired and moved to the mountains, I found my go to jeans most of my life were crap for working in the dirt, duff and granite. I found "Key" jeans, double front loggers. They are pure gold work pants.... But the weep holes are too small to get a good knee pad into them. I found some lesser jeans that were able to take a substantial knee pad but they did not come with buttons. So I reached out to Key and for a nominal price sent me a bag of buttons (which also have some steel in them) Never had a button loosen, let alone, pull out. But, I do thank you for mentioning the nod to Welch suspenders. I do like suspenders that are a bit elastic so you don't kill your shoulders when you bend over. But, the Carhartt suspenders today have awful adjusters that don't hold and the elastic goes sour real quick.

Not sure i'm ready to join the suspenders for life camp, but that being said--these are cool tips and i'll keep them in mind.

I love suspenders too. I use a thinner elastic pair for my double knee canvas pants and a thicker elastic pair for my carpenter's belt. I've been using the clip on style. They will not stay on all day, which was very frustrating, so I found that if you take a small nail, I use brass, cut it down to 3/16" and push it through the crimping hole in the suspenders clamp it holds perfect all day everyday.

I feel so SILLY..... didn't know you install those buttons yourself!!!!!! All this time..... was just waiting to come across, the right pair of pants 👖 that you could attach your suspenders to. Wow.... it's the little things in LIFE, that you just didn't know & learn about. 🙏🏾

Hi Mr Wadsworth, I switched to suspenders maybe 10-15 years ago. I found they give more support than a belt, especially with the added weight of a few tools hanging off my pants, including the occasional weighty items in my pockets. I bought the 1.5” wide Y-back trigger snap suspenders from Suspender Store. I found the placement of the belt loops on my Levi’s appropriately placed, especially the single loop centered on the back side. Knowing these belt loops weren’t particularly made for trigger snaps, I wondered how long before one of the belt loops would last. Hasn’t been a problem for casual wear. But then I found Truewerk pants that had suspender loops, nicely reinforced. I’ve been very happy with this setup. Easy to snap on and easy to disengage for ‘taking care of business’. I’d like your opinion. Thanks, Mark

I’ve been doing the clamp on suspenders for a couple years now. They come off all the time when you’re reaching or what not. I just bought the clip on, but I soon learned that the belt loops in any of my pants don’t match up with the clips. I’m now going to go the button route. Thanks for the info

I discovered suspenders about a year before I discovered the channel. I'm a clip-on man, but I think you may have just convinced me to switch.

Had to put some bachelors in my duluth pants. The ones provided by duluth trading are such a pain in the butt! The sharp end was dull and didnt pentrate in the other end when left flat. Sonits just turning all over the shop when i tried to hammer it down. Its got three baffles for the fat old nail to grab on to, so its certainly unlikely to come apart, for certain. But also it was real tough to get thing to fully stick together. Ultimately, i ended up punching it with an awl and then smooshing the two ends together in my vise. Which, if your hands arent steady enough for hammering, or your having trouble like I was, the vise works well for this

I’ve used the screw together buttons on Vests, and they seem to hold up better than the hammer together buttons. The hammer buttons, (drive in) require such a finesse to not *over* drive and damage, which causes them to fall apart.

Worst part about the weekend being over is I can't binge watch this channel!

I've been wearing Perry Suspenders for many years now. I like them because they grab your belt, not your pants. So I can wear a belt losely, and still hold up my pants. Plus I carry my sidearm and my multitool on my belt, so the suspenders do a great job at distributing the weight.

Great info as always Scott. I have been wearing suspenders for about 10 years and love not having droopy drawers. I settled on the swivel clip hooks to the belt loops as they are the easiest to put on and take off. I like the idea of the buttons but I wear a belt with the suspenders (some say sign of insecurity haha). As I have been wearing a Leatherman Wave for over 30 years and won't leave the house without it, I don't think I can do the buttons as they would dig in from pressure of the belt. 57, you would be surprised. I wear a belt with my suspenders (old habits die hard) I just don't wear it nearly as tight as I once did.

Another thing is, if you have them, use a Knipex pliers wrench to put them together. Easy, fast, and you are less likely to mash the button over.

I ended up using a regular philips screwdriver on some screw buttons, and they were much more usable.

Being a firefighter for 37 years now retired I wore and still wear the leather Boston suspenders. The advantage is that the leather doesn’t pull on your shirts as you’re bending or doing other work. I add the buttons to all my work pants. Adding a strap across the chest may be necessary to keep them from falling off your shoulders at times.

I never had great luck with the carhart buttons

I wish I'd gone with suspenders when I was breaking in back in '73. Wore a belt for all those year and at age 67 the surgeon said I needed to fuse L4-L5-S1 and C4-C5 (swing those 22 oz. hammers you old framers). Surgeon said, "You just cinched that belt up tighter on hard days didn't you." Yes, I lifted too much alone (like none of you have done the same) and I'm paying the price. I've been in suspenders for about 3 years but can't lift more than 30lbs. now. Who was my moron of a boss? Me! A, B, C10, and C36 in CA and I was always determined to set the pace and the example. What a fool I was. Be kind to yourself, you are the human-machine that makes your living. When you're broken, there's no more money rolling in.

According to Amazon the Welch Bucksaw Logger bachelor buttons are made in USA.
