One really cool thing you didn’t bring up about Gotye was the way he treats Somebody That I Used To Know. The music video on KZread isn’t monetized. He gets absolutely no ad revenue from it. Not only that, but he refuses to let people use the song in marketing, and he won’t license it out to any big movies. It is however perfectly OK to be used in independent works. Man found himself on top of the world, with the ability to do whatever he wanted, and instead he chose to jump off while simultaneously giving the middle finger to the music industry and everything it stands for. You couldn’t be any more cool than that if you tried.

I have found articles on him pretty interesting. He acknowledges that ‘Somebody’ is so successful that from the royalties of that song alone he is able to do what he want for the rest of his life. He loves music and being a recording artist, but he doesn’t need to be commercially successful ever again. He has an independent record label. He has played for some Australian bands. He apparently plans to release more music. But he is not driven by money or fake and that song becoming so popular set him up for a life where he doesn’t need either to pursue his interests.
@Joelster-og4pf Жыл бұрын
When you said Bronte is a great song, I smiled with a lot of satisfaction. I so agree. It’s beautiful and I think his work is 100x stronger and better than most of the popular artists. God, his other songs are so unique. Also, listening to an album of his front to back is so worth it. Even if I still love that one big hit (why bother the name), some of the album tracks are better. Finally, no matter how old his albums are, they remain fresh.

Yeah his deep cuts and other albums are all so good, it's weird that most people (me included) didn't know he existed, and never followed up with the rest of the album. Granted, he didn't capitalize on his big break by churning out a forced 4th album. I still wish he did a little less with the Basics, they low-key drag him down.

One thing about Goteye is this was a smart move. He made a legendary album. Even if you don't know his name you hear a track and you know it. But he went out on top, made his money, rode off into the sunset, and can live a regular life. Like if you saw him in the store. You wouldn't think "I'm looking at a multimillionaire."

When Big Day dropped, I couldn't believe it so much that I kept asking people what they thought of the album. I was that far in denial that I genuinely searched for at least one positive review. I think Chance has got another really exceptional album still in him, but you can tell the battering he took from people shitting on Big Day has got him thinking twice about doing another big project also Coldplay for sure fell off hard. Viva La Vida was such a stand out album especially in the often stagnant pop genre with some really great production and guest writing from artists like Brian Eno and Jon Hopkins, and then everything after Mylo Xlyoto really leaned hard into to sugary boring pop. would love to see another video talking about that

Find myself commenting again, because this channel is as if my neurodivergent brain came together to spit out all the thoughts that run through my head 24/7, and I love it. Seeing you talk about Gotye beyond Somebody That I Used To Know makes me so happy. I hyperfixated on that song when it first came out, and it became a two year nightmare for not just my entire family, but for my school as well lmao. I had that song playing almost every single hour of the day no matter what I was doing. It even got to the point where I painted my Barbie dolls as Gotye in the music video for Somebody That I Used To Know…🤕 Of course, a song wasn’t enough for my seven year old self, and I wholeheartedly believe that Making Mirrors was the first album I listened to in full. It is in my top 10 albums of all time list, and I even wrote an essay in my senior year of high school on the album and its subtle and underrated impact. That album is definitely unmatched to anything I’ve ever heard, and I wish more people would appreciate it for beyond Somebody That I Used to Know, because Gotye is such an underrated gem of an artist. I know he isn’t a fan of the limelight, but I’d kill to hear In Your Light live in person for once. Just once at least.

@Joelster-og4pf

@@ThobeianYeah. I’ll be honest.. every album that Gotye put out is really solid. Plus, I actually prefer some of his other tunes that don’t get talked about sadly.

I’m honestly surprised Degen has been able to make videos on topics I’ve never thought of for more than a minute.
Moral of the story: never miss his videos

Just once at least.
mane you are one of the funniest guys i watch on the tube whenever i start i can never end the rabbit hole until my mom calls me down for dinner this is a ninja guarantee
“I love my wife, I love my wife *AHHHHHHH”*
I would love for you to make a part 2. The research you put into this was amazing!!
Nah man you just specifically described my high school days listening to chance. Acid Rap & Colouring Book really feel like they were a part of my childhood. I just really hope that whatever he comes with next is something incredible. I know he can do it.
Your edits are hilarious! Lmao.
crazy to think that Dababy could've been one of THE rappers for only slightly longer if he just kept his mouth shut 💀

There are many artists I know like this. I found Gotye to be super forgettable. So much I thought Gotye died and Somebody I use to Know was made in the 90s. I was shocked to find out it was made in 2012

Came here for Gotye. He was complaining that he got cut off, but that's EXACTLY what he did to us.
I’m glad that Chance’s new songs aren’t shit and are actually really good. The heart and the tongue is one of my favorite tracks from him.
