Figured I'd tell ya... I went through all my "chemicals" and tossed over half of them, never to be purchased again. I went to my local lake and collected a jar of leaves in replacement and been watching the life form. i added that to my aquariums. Many tetras started breeding a day later, a pair of discus started laying. I have a few plecos and they were eating my plants. they now stopped, became fat and sassy from the leaves and my plants are growing back. Now lush green algae is growing on the wood and back of aquarium. I'm more than pleased on how natural it looks and is progressing

I collected some leaves from the local river after monsoon and put them in my tank. Man!! There wasn't a fish that wasn't breeding. I can't explain why.

I've had fish since the 1960s and have set up/operated hundreds of tanks over those years. And agree 100% that planning is the most important step. Never had a well planned tank go belly up.

I truly appreciate this approach of always asking WHY, instead of just doing as you're told. That principle applies to SO many things in life, not just aquariums.

As simple as this information is, it’s also mind blowing. I admit I’m one of those people who think they are “experts” in this field, I am glad that I was WRONG.father fish it the true expert and I’m glad he is sharing his knowledge with us . Thank you father fish

Hello Father 🐟 I have been following your channel for about a month now and studied/learned about your All Natural Aquarium's and fell in love with the whole process of creating one in my home. I watched so many of your how to do videos and got so much "KNOWLEDGE" that I feel that I'm ready to create my own Father Fish Nautral Tank. I thought, I dreamed, etc., for the last couple of weeks and feel that it's enough thinking and dreaming of how I'm going to proceed and I've gotten to the point that I feel that I can say "I got this! I just had my first fish baby, a bronze corydoras. 2 years of feeding fish the father fish way and it has happened. I had four corys and now I have five. I saw the eggs months ago but thought nothing of it. Eggs never produce fish in my tanks till now. I must have had enough natural food and micro organisms in there to breed fish. He must have been in there a while as he is almost an adult. Father Fish methods work… fish like Father Fish❤

I just switched over and once everything settled I realized I have 8 panda corys. I guess the sand made them stand out so I could count them. I started with 5! I do remember seeing a couple of small ones thinking hmmm, I thought they were bigger?... it's one if the best parts of fish keeping!

Keeping fish, coaching soccer, playing soccer, training new employees on the job, or living life in general, you have to be knowledgeable in everything you do. Here's my take on it and I think it's what you are saying in this video. Knowledge doesn't come from watching a video or reading a book....although there are things to be learned there. Learning is different than knowledge. True knowledge comes from experience. Experience comes from trial and error. Trial and error means you try, you fail, you try again, and keep trying till you get it right. I am in the process of setting up my first tank in almost 40 years. I kept a few small aquariums when I was a teenager. I had planned on starting out with a 55 gallon tank but came across a deal I couldn't pass up so I bit of more than I can chew and I now have a 125 gallon tank. For the last couple of months, I have been watching and studying KZread videos. I've done exactly what you said....daydreamed. I've thought about it a lot. I have an idea of what I want to do. I will be taking my time. I'll probably put water in the tank tomorrow and it might be a month or so before I put fish in it. My wife told me that I could have the tank in the house but if it starts stinking, it will have to go, lol. I told her that I would care for the tank and do it right to keep that from happening but she was going to have to allow me to make some mistakes. This goes back to my point. Even thought I've watched you and others and I learn how you and they do things. Every tank is different and every tank comes with it's own challenges. I will use what I've learned from you and other to set a foundation to build on but I won't have knowledge of my tank until I make some mistakes, learn from them, try and try again until I get it right. Then and only then will I have knowledge....but only of that incident. There will be others that I'll have to learn from as well. When we train soccer players or people at the factory I work at, we tell them that everyone you work with is going to train you in a different way. None of them are wrong. So listen to everyone and figure out what works best for you. But you won't figure it out until you mess up, learn from it and get it right. That is what knowledge is. Thanks for this message and wish me luck on starting up a tank bigger than I should have started with, lol.

@@FatherFish well since we are on the subject of knowledge, can I borrow a little bit of yours? I have researched this but can't find the answer to this question. As I mentioned, I bought a used 125 gallon tank and got a bunch of stuff with it. One thing the guy left in the tank was about 5 gallons of crushed coral. He kept African Cichlids and as you know coral raises the pH of the water and cichlids thrive in that environment. I don't plan on keeping cichlids and I hate to throw away 5 gallons of substrate if I can use it. So my question is, if I use the coral and it raises the pH of the water will tetras, rasboras, barbs, goldfish or any other "typical" aquarium fish do OK in that water? I have found all types of answers to the benefits to adding coral to the tank and that cichlids do well in it and some bottom feeders love it for the calcium it provides but I haven't found anything on how it might benefit or adversely affect other types of fish. Here's a part B to that question - I also found that a lot of people will add crushed coral to their filters to help improve bacteria growth. So if I decide to go with sand or gravel, can I still get some use out of the coral by placing it in my filters or might that still be unpleasant to the fish if that's even a factor?

I've been following your channel for a couple of months now, and I set up my first Walstadt tank. It's a 10g with five varieties of Aroid, a dwarf sword, a Pogostemon, Duckweed, and some kind of sedge, with a couple of catappa leaves. It houses a Scarlet Badis, 3 Chain Loaches, and a tiny Chocolate Gourami, awa a smattering of Ramshorn Snails. I spiked it all with some water from my outdoor pond (no fish). I have sponge filter and heat to 78°F. We'll see how this goes before I convert some of my other tanks. Thanx for all your knowledge, sir. Have a great day!

Hey father fish appreciate your information. I now have two father fishtanks. The last one is doing well. I am trying to grow hairgrass carpet. I don’t have CO2 and I have rosy red minnows in it. I was using the rosy red minnows to help cycle the tank. The main thing I don’t like about them is out of the 25. There’s always a couple that have a long string of poop coming out of them. You can see the 75gallon it was Gumi on my channel.

Hello again fish daddy. You are absolutely right, visualizing and planning before you even decide on a location for the tank. That is the most important step. And take your time, you can't rush perfection.

Thank you so much for the wisdom of your knowledge you share. I`m wanting to start developing a freshwater aquarium but will start out small with maybe a beta fish. I really want to end up with at least a fiftyfive gallon aquarium eventually. I`m a novice so I am looking forward to more videos...Thank you again.

I been in FF discord and get kicked out cuz i violated the rules once: typing @here in a channel, which would mention everyone in that channel, then i got muted for 24 hr, then i got removed by the admin. Wow! What a harsh and discipline community. Anyway i dont need to come back there, though i'll still use some of FF methods such as: using garden soil mixing with other compound instead of industrial aqua soil, using sand for capping substrates, adding deteriorating leaves from outside. Sometimes i still add liquid fertiliser since i dont wanna spend my time collecting things to make the plants thrive, i still use bateria bottle like Stability once in a while. I dont go all natural but i still feel good about it, i dont spend much money like the majority of hobbyists but still maintaining a healthy and thriving aquarium, making a small contribution for the aquarium industries and saving time to do other things. That's it guys, you can do whatever you want, as long as your aquarium is good, and your happy about it. Knowledge is power.

I will add I have learned the most from your youtube videos.

I have had tanks for fortyseven years, and I went to get lake water the other day, for the first time! I was getting in purebred baby guppies to go into a new tank setup, and had used plants, and water from another tank, along with sponges, to start it up, but it had a bacterial bloom that would NOT clear up! The lake water did the trick! They came yesterday, and all are doing well! I also have cut down water changes, unless I am vacuming substrate, and only do top offs!

The day dreaming often became night dreaming, it's true, it's so important, visualize everything and prepare for it. It will save the life of your fish and it will save you a lot of stress and money. Impulsion and fear lead us to buy so many useless things and commit big mistakes. I can honestly say, if I did not rush and took the time to understand instead of doing what youtuber said to do left and right, I would have save at least 70-80% of tue money I put in this hobby.

Your very awesome!! I'm listening to your videos and trying to figure out exactly how it will fit with my angel fish.

Per your advice I have finally started a dirt setup in my turtle tank! I added bone meal and peat moss to some organic soil and made about an inch,though my sand layer comes up shy by about a quarter inch. Thankfully my turtle hasn't been digging as often because I've added more dead leaves and twigs to the tank! Now that I've got soil i plan to add rooted plants,any recommendations? I foraged some wild watercress,i am letting that grow separately for now.

I have 3 jars and some plant vats outside that have life in them! It took a while to see anything, but its there. I just bought a Father Fish plant bundle and excited to redo my tank after it crashed on July 4th (ugg) My corys are in a 3 gallon planted tank right now and my platys and 1 angelfish are in a 10 gallon tank just waiting to go back home.

Another good watch. Keen on watching you're videos. Spent today wiping down and preparing for reseal my new(preowned) aqua one aquastyle 850. I am imagining, looking forward to the process & being patient with it

I've mentioned before that I would get Amber Tetras. They can live in a 6 gallon Aqueon cube fish tank. They're tiny and not regular size guppies. If you saw the new video today, the guess had 2 regular size fish in a vase. He mentioned it was a tryout. He explained that the fish grew up in the vase. he kept those fish there, and my fish would live happily. There are a lot of youtubers here that made videos of Nano fish for 5 gallons.

The first tank I started was a 10 gallon tank. I watched my first FF video and did what you said. I went to my pond and dug the Mud from the bottom and 5 gallons of the water and put it in the tank. I put river sand on top. Then about a week later I watched another video and you said you made a mistake about adding the mud. At that point I decided to get a 55 gallon tank and set it up from another video you made in which you included the list of all the ingredients you used. It turned out great so far. I haven't added tropical fish yet but I do have 4 minnows in it that came with the pond water. I don't regret doing the 10 gallon tank and all is well. It was a good learning experience. Lesson learned from this is my 1acre pond needs a lot of work to get the water quality improved. I wish I could get rid of the beavers they cut down another willow tree in one day.

Some people do it with sand only, it works as well. It's only taking more time until things settle while a deep substrate will be an almost instant result. I've used a full shovel of black earth that was sitting next to a small creek. Didn't had any thoughts about it being rich enough because all the plants I've gathered where growing on a muddy sand beach anyways so it is already better. Put sand from a pit on top. No problems so far, the only thing I wish I had done different is to wash that sand before. At first the plants where almost all melting, i really tought they would all die but they where secretly building a strong root system under the sand and now more of them have began to pop out everywhere 🤟😁👍!

I and others are about to be banned from some of the "fish groups" for discussing how we need to change how we are keeping fish, because the "experts" are too ignorant to admit we have been doing it wrong for years (yes myself included, up to finding FF) it will take a while for people to understand and accept they may need to take a step back and re-educate themselves but slowly is better than not at all! I am thoroughly enjoying my re-education journey with FF & Dr Innes and my passion for fishkeeping is back 🎉

It is a slow and tough grind. George Farmer has finally dipped his pinky toe in the natural tank water. He does not get it but if we are noisy enough he will learn. ALL the big KZreadrs are ignorant of natural systems.

Great video. I did many days of planning and thinking about the hard scape substrate and plants. My tank took three weeks to go from positioning in the room to adding fish.

I have kept fish for over 30 years. And i found this channel. I probably doubled my knowledge in a few months. At least thats how I feel! I now have a father fish style planted 29 gallon with NO filter. Just an air stone and a heater and of course lights. Thats it. And its thriving. I have a school of 20 chilis. 9 salt and pepper coreys 2 ottos, and several neocardinias. And its thriving. Never looking back again. Ready to do another tank!

Dear father fish, I have been hearing a lot of talk about boiling the wood I find before I add it to my aquarium. I am planning a trip next week to a nearby park and river. Excited about hunting for wood and rocks. I have added a sandcap over my gravel substrate . Thank you for educating me. My fish already act like reborn. My cories love it. You speak of micro organisms. Wouldn't boiling the wood I find kill all of those ? I have taken off my hanging filters and put in 2 sponge filters. If you get this and have the time could you just let me know about the wood ? I am so grateful that I found your tutorials. I know that you saved my fish!!! Your fan Marion Carter.

Marion. Do not boil the wood. The organics are important. If you are apprehensive put the in a bucket or tub of water outdoors for a week or more. Hope you find treasures

I change my old 50 gal tank to new parameters acording your words, but I dont know how much lumens of light I need to plants now and what to do about filtration. I still have 2 hang on working (10x50 g/h) full of ceramic rings and sponges in it. My next step is ?

Patience love that word in todays world it is sadly lacking in todays i want it now world . Whether a basic setup or an unfiltered planted tank it all takes time . My own personal story got back in during covid after 20 years out it has taken me 3 years to get to a point where i feel i can pull the filter from my tank and let it do its thing . Even with that i have a sponge filter in my 90 that has been seeding for 3 months as a back up if things go south . Patience and planning key to being a good fish keeper ,Your words and i agree 100 %

Father fish, This is so true about taking your time. I had a 90 gal tank completely crash and killed all off my fish. Because I rushed. This almost made me quit the hobby. I was so sad and upset with myself. Now when I did the tank over again I took my time to Allow the bacteria to take over. Appreciate this video. Words of wisdom.

2wk old but I'll post anyway. 😂 I watched a couple videos and jumped off the ladder head first. 😂 I didn't purchase or use any test equipment. I lucked out. Got enough right. I added 4 more 10 gal tanks to the potential train wreck. Planning a big tank and propagating plants like crazy in preparation. Hopefully by winter I'll afford the new tank.

Hello! I just found your channel and think your content is amazing! I’ve been keeping dirted tanks now for about 8 years. Some tanks great, some not so great. Your channel thus far has opened up my eyes to how to keep an even more natural tank. Now the question, in one of your previous videos you say to grab some dried leaves from the ground near the body of water. How do you ensure that your leaves have not been treated with pesticides, moreover, if you suspect they have been what is your solution? Much love from Florida Thanks! Jamie

Hey Father Fish - I hope you get a chance to read this. Before I stumbled on your channel I was looking for a less expensive way to plant a deep substrate without using over-priced aquarium soil. I ended up experimenting with vermiculite. I’m realize that this is a bit outside your philosophy, but I’m curious what your thoughts are. Vermiculite has a number of interesting properties: it’s ph neutral, acts as a buffer, provides trace minerals including calcium and magnesium, and is permanently negatively charged, allowing it to sequester ammonia. It absorbs many times it’s weight in water, allowing vermiculite to retain and store nutrients. I currently am running two tanks, one which is an ordinary decorative planted tank with 1-4” of vermiculite capped with gravel (if do it again I’d use sand) in a planted tank, and another boggy blackwater tank that uses 50% vermiculite and 25% pete, 25% soil in a with 3-5” of substrate depth. Both tanks are working amazing, even with the black water tank being too warm for some of the plants I attempted to grow have rotted away, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate remain at zero - and this is a 10 gallon tank, of which only about 8 gallons is being used! I probably could have gotten away with not doing a water change, but dud for aesthetic reasons. I’m really impressed by the performance of my vermiculite experiments, and was curious what your thoughts are, even if it’s not a very “natural” choice and vermiculite itself is sterile.

Hello Father Fish 🐠, I have a question. I had fish when I was just a kid back in the 70’s . And now I have my house and a Dog and a cat ,.. well I just love 💕 animals. My question on my new tank I’m going to set up. Do you recommend to put snails 🐌 in the tank with live plants 🌱. Thanks for everything you do for the hobby.

I was going to wait until I absolutely have to and get a really good start on the tank. I’m thinking about Apple Snails 🐌 because I would think they would do a good job and I don’t think they would be too crazy on eating all the plants 🌱 up. I also have excess to my family’s farm pond with a lot of water plants available in our area. Thank you for your information and what you are doing for this hobby. hi Father Fish! so i have a 55g with 3 irredesents (6in) i have 2 inchs' of gravel..i'm going to add sand right on top..(would sand at my local fish store be ok? and 2nd... so been following you for about 3 months havn't vaccumed the tank like you said..the only issue i see is my plants are turning brown rapidly . what to do?? thank you. cheers

FF, is soil from a forest good as a substrate? I think it's rich nutrients and microorganisms

It is designed for the trees it supports. Add potting and compost to it. Treat it like peat.

It is inadequate compared to naturally collected bacteria.

Yes BUT it cannot be allowed to be stirred up or poured into water. VERY dusty with clay.

If you can do some kinda waterfall or sist spray of the tank water that will drop the temp some. Worst case put a canister filter in an ice chest and cover it with ice and watch temps clisely

Interesting idea. Never tried to do that. Roots will have a hard time with it.

mr fish, i have made a 29 gallon with a sponge filter, deep sand bed, sunbleached maple wood i collected, and leaves i gathered from a local lake. Planted with both pet store and local plants. Currently keeping native diving beetles. They are great fun, like having a colony of tiny turtle piranas. my question is, my water is so dark from tannins that it can be hard to see into. Will this go away on its own over time, or is there something i need to do to get it to clear up a bit?
